Commodity rallies generally don't hold gains. Carley discussed this on TDAmeritrade Network - Commodity Broker - Options, Futures, Integrity

Commodity rallies can be impressive, but they rarely hold gains. Because commodities are often renewable or mineable assets, the cure for high prices is high prices. As producers recognize higher profit potential supplies increase and vice versa. Commodity broker,  Carley Garner, joined the TDAmeritrade Network to discuss this and other topics such as copper futures, precious metals, grains, and the US dollar index.

Selling options on commodities isn't for everyone, but it is worth a look.

Published in: Archived Futures Trading Webinars

They say trading is the hardest way to make easy money. The same can be said of selling options, particular selling options on futures. It is a strategy that works most of the time, offers plenty of room for error, and merely requires traders to not be wrong in order to profit. Yet, the inevitable black swan or even a far less unusual occasion can produce massive drawdowns. In this video, we discuss some things to keep in mind about the strategy such as why it is worth considering and why option sellers must stay on their toes to survive.

Crude oil down and dollar up from here? See us onTD Ameritrade Network. - Commodity Broker - Options, Futures, Integrity

If the dollar has bottomed, it will push oil and rates lower. - Significant tops and bottoms in oil and the US dollar tend to coincide with one another. In late March of 2020, the greenback made a dramatic peak, a month later oil bottomed under $20.00. The early 2021 environment feels like the inverse, leading to the opposite result. In other words, if the dollar bottom is in, as we suspect, the oil market is due to react with softening prices. That could mean a convergence of the spread between the two assets pulling oil prices lower and the dollar higher. To be fair, this process has been dragging out longer than we expected, and oil prices have increased at a much quicker pace than we believed to be possible but, in the end, gravity and mean reversion will likely come into play.

Buying call options might be the next pain trade

Published in: Archived Futures Trading Webinars

Will call option buying soon be the new pain trade? If so, how can we prepare ourselves for the implications?

I’ve been doing this long enough to know trading is not a walk in the park, at least not trading profitably. In recent months, buying overpriced call options in the S&P has felt, to some, like a risk-free proposition. Stocks only go up, right? The absurdity of the call option buying froth is best portrayed in the now infamous TikTok video in which two young investors encouraged followers to quit their jobs and trade stock options instead. The strategy is simple, buy calls when a stock is moving higher and then sell at the first sign of the stock going down. What could go wrong? Join us to discuss specific commodity and stock index futures options markets to discuss overheating and overzealous speculation.

A refresher on stock portfolio hedging with futures and options

Published in: Archived Futures Trading Webinars

Risk reversals might be a good way to hedge price risk in a stock portfolio.

Buying put options on stock index futures is one way to hedge portfolio risk but it isn't the only way. In fact, there are less used strategies that might offer more practical solutions such as selling call options to pay for any put protection purchased. Of course, such practices don't make sense in all circumstances.
