California-bound (February, 2012)
Dave and I will be traveling to California in February of 2012, to visit my family and to take part in a really neat event which I'll have more information available about, soon. But I figure, if we're going to be out there anyway, perhaps we can add a few events to our calendar! Here's a handy press release for the information rundown:
—–
Husband and wife graphic novelists, Raina Telgemeier (Smile) and Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity) will be traveling to the San Francisco Bay Area in February, 2012.
Are you (or do you know) a librarian? Teacher? Principal? Bookseller? Dave and I would love to visit your school, library, or bookstore!
We have a solid week available (February 13-18) to do events for kids! We are offering our combined visual presentation; hands-on comics workshops; live readings; drawing demos; book signings, and more. We're comfortable speaking to groups of 10 – 1000 people. The target age for the graphic novels we create is 9 – 12, but we're happy to speak to teenagers or adults as well!
If you're interested in booking us for an event, please send an inquiry email to goRaina [AT] gmail [DOT] com. We will be in touch soon with a list of our programs and fees.

Here are a few photos from my last California tour!

Perhaps we could do this again? Drop me a line! Hope to talk to you soon.

I'm in the paper!
Earlier this week, Dave and I were interviewed for a profile piece in the New York Times! The article takes a look at the married life of two cartoonists, and talks about what we have going on this weekend at the New York Comic Con. Head over to the link to read the article!
Raina and Dave in the New York Times!
The story (with a completely different photo!) is also in today's print edition of the Times, on page A17.

How do you say "Raina Telgemeier"?
Some tricks and treats for you today:
++If you're wondering how to say my name, I teamed up with a site called TeachingBooks.net, which offers audio clips of authors saying their names! I also included a couple of pronunciation tips, and an anecdote about how got my name in the first place. Just follow the LINK!
++From the same site: here's a short recording I made where I talk about Smile, and even read an excerpt.
++In other news, I updated my info page with some frequently asked questions! Take a look.
++Finally, I'll be dropping into the New York Comic Con this weekend. My schedule of signings and panels is here, in case you missed it the first time around.
Happy October!

Nursery Rhyme Comics! Launch Party 10/21/11
I have a piece in the upcoming Nursery Rhyme Comics, which will be released on October 11!
First Second Books published this beautiful collection, edited by Chris Duffy, and featuring 50 classic rhymes by 50 talented cartoonists. I was asked to interpret the poem Georgie Porgie, and the results were…well, the word "messy" comes to mind. Here's a teaser:
There will be a book launch party!
What: Launch Party & Exhibition for Nursery Rhyme Comics
Where: POWERHOUSE ARENA
37 Main Street / Brooklyn, NY (in Dumbo)
When: Friday, October 21, 7-9pm
A selection of cartoonists, including Leonard Marcus, Sara Varon, Scott Campbell, Dave Roman, Raina Telgemeier, Nick Abadzis, Nick Bruel, George O'Connor, and Mark Siegel will have their work on display for the launch of this collection of classic nursery rhymes reinterpreted by some of the greatest comic artists of our time.
Books and original art will be for sale! The event is open to the public, and free to attend. It will be fun, so I hope you can make it!
(I'll also be signing NRC at the New York Comic Con, on Sunday, October 16.)

Creating is only the first step. You have an idea, you write, draw and concept that idea into a comic book. But the work doesn't end there. How do you get people to know you exist? How do you achieve a larger audience? This will be a conversation on multiple subjects regarding how to build a rewarding career in the comics industry from the ground up.

Smile lands on the NYT Bestseller List!
Amazing news–SMILE is on next week's New York Times Graphic Books Bestseller List!!
Amazing, because the book has been out for over a year and a half, buoyed by word of mouth and Book Fair sales, but has only now generated enough retail sales to earn a spot on the prestigious NYT list.
I'm soaring.

Brooklyn Book Festival: 9/18
Quick reminder! This weekend, I'll be attending the Brooklyn Book Festival in downtown Brooklyn, on Sunday, September 18.
I'll be participating in two events:
11:00 A.M.
Comics Quick-Draw!
Three comic artists face off in this fast-paced contest. Drawing (literally!) from audience suggestions, NYT best-selling and ALA-notable book author/illustrator Raina Telgemeier (Smile), best-selling author/illustrator Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy), and rising star author/illustrator Laura Lee Gulledge (Page by Paige) will battle with pen and pad. And, everybody wins: finished art will be gifted to some of the lucky young people in attendance! Moderated by Calvin Reid, editor of Publishers Weekly Comics World.
Location: YOUTH STOOP.
3:00 P.M.
Turn-Your-Life-Into-A-Comic Workshop
This is an event aimed at kids. I haven't been able to confirm a location, so check the schedule when you arrive on Sunday! Come make comics with me!
Book signings will immediately follow each of my events.

SPX, Brooklyn Book Fest, and More!
Yikes, I've let this blog go to seed! But it's been a busy summer, and I hope you'll forgive me. I've been working on DRAMA non-stop, and I can finally see the light at the end of the work tunnel. Just gotta keep my head down, and stay hard at work!
A few fun things are happening this fall, so I want to let you know about that!

This coming weekend, I'll be down in Bethesda, MD for one of my favorite comic shows, Small Press Expo!
You can find me at Table F16. Look for Dave's Astronaut Academy banner, and that's where I'll be! I'll have some books and Smile T-shirts for sale, and an assortment of original art too.

October 13 – 16 sees the return of the New York Comic Con. I won't have a table there, but I'm setting up a couple of signings and panels. More info when I have it!

Finally this fall, I'm heading over to France, for the Quai des Bulles festival in Saint Malo, Brittany!
This is France's second-largest comic event, after Angouleme. The festival runs from October 28-30. I'll be signing with Smile's (or technically, Souriez's) French publisher, Akileos, and then heading to Paris for a few more signing events. I don't have all of the times and dates confirmed yet, but you can bet I'll be back with the details soon. If I have any readers in France, I'd love to meet you…even if I don't really speak the language!
