A Leader’s Top Priority This Busy Holiday Season

A Leader's Top Priority This Busy Holiday Season | Orange Leaders Blog

A few days ago while driving home, I could feel my blood pressure rise and my heart beat quicken when I heard the radio DJ announce that there was almost 30 days until Christmas. My mind started rattling off all the things my wife and I still need to do/start to do: gifts, decorations, Christmas cards, travel, parties, teacher gifts, and so much more. We’re so busy right now. How can I even think of adding more onto an already very full plate?

For those of us in ministry leadership roles, it’s even...

5 Ways Church Leaders Can Be More Effective Communicators

5 Ways Church Leaders Can Be More Effective Communicators | Orange Leaders Blog

In one of our recent Orange staff meetings, our CEO Reggie Joiner pointed out five principles for how to communicate more effectively. I thought it might be worth sharing these principles with you since every church leader can afford to communicate better.

1. Say Less

The Bible has about 800,000 words total—that’s a lot of words. For comparison, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy plus The Hobbit has about 575,000 words total.

About a quarter of the Bible’s words land in the New Testament. Of t...

Do You Know Where I Live?

by Emily Meredith, adapted from the book It’s Personal

When I took my older son to his kindergarten assessment, I was prepared for him to answer questions about letters and numbers and shapes. But there was one question I had completely neglected. When the teacher asked him to say his address and my phone number, he looked at her with a blank stare.

Two kids later and several grades behind us, I now understand why that question was included in his assessment. Knowing where you live is important. But beyond...

How to Prepare Your Church for the Next Decade

The theme of the 2020 Orange Conference is Every Generation Needs a New Revolution. A few definitions from Merriam-Webster of “revolution” include:

a sudden, radical, or complete change activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation a fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something a change of paradigm

Change is inevitable. A revolution implies something bigger, faster, or more impactful. Let’s face it, churches have not been known for being at the forefront of change. There have been major revolut...

How To Lead Difficult Team Members

How To Lead Difficult Team Members | Orange Leaders Blog

From your first year as a rookie in ministry until your final farewell tour of a half-century of servanthood, chances are that along your way you will eventually be confronted with a ministry partner (volunteer) that causes some friction either with your ministry team, with your ministry direction, or with you personally. And although there are endless reasons (or excuses) why a team member might not be in sync with the direction of your leadership in ministry; the fact remains, God has place...

Do You Know What Matters to Me?

What is it that matters the most to you?

Your kids Your job Your 401K Your next vacation A favorite hobby or sports team

There are a million different ways you could answer this question. And the same is true for the kids in your ministry. For every kid, something matters.

Maybe for the children or teenagers in your ministry . . .

Homecoming matters. Unicorns matter. K-pop matters. Slime matters. Chocolate donuts matter. Instagram matters. Play-doh matters. Fornite matters. Pepperoni pizza matters. Marvel movies matter.

No matter where you live or who you lead, this part is always true: What matters...

Two Mistakes You Might Be Making When it Comes to Understanding Kids

Two Mistakes You Might Be Making When it Comes to Understanding Kids | Orange Leaders

Try explaining age to a three-year-old. You may say, “One day you’ll be big like me!” And then he’ll respond, as he stands on a chair, “Look! I’m getting bigger already!”

Teens aren’t any easier. Sure, they get what it means to be 16, but they don’t understand what it takes to be considered an adult.

You, on the other hand, hold the membership card. You’ve lived longer, seen more, and know better. That’s why you are the one who leads the way.

So I’m the boss and what I say goes right?

Not exac...

10 Ways Orange Conference Has Changed Over the Past 10 Years

“Why do you keep going back?”

This is a question I have heard many times when I tell people I’m attending The Orange Conference. While the basic concepts of the Orange philosophy has not changed over the years, the Conference continues to evolve. Some of those changes are not that important, but others have made the event even better.

I’ve been attending The Orange Conference since 2010—which means, I have 10 years of OC experience. With that in mind, here are 10 ways the Orange Conference...
