The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
In my book A Very Typical Family, which is set in Santa Cruz, CA, my characters don’t visit the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, but that was to save space. I definitely wanted them to and in fact the screams and rickety roar of the Giant Dipper is one of the first things Natalie hears when she arrives back in Santa Cruz after many years away.
But rest assured, Kit will be spending many happy sunny summer days at the Boardwalk.
Growing up in Santa Cruz, the Boardwalk was always my favorite place. The...

The Cooper House in Santa Cruz
In my book A Very Typical Family, which is set in Santa Cruz, CA, Natalie takes her nephew Kit to Santa Cruz’s downtown area. People who remember the downtown before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake obliterated many of the historic buildings there will remember the central jewel: the mustard-yellow Cooper House.
The Cooper House was my favorite building when I was a kid. Remember Ginger the Rainbow Lady?
As a Good Times article correctly notes, “For anyone living in town during the 1970s and 198...

West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz
In my book A Very Typical Family, which is set in Santa Cruz, CA, there is quite a lot of walking along West Cliff Drive, and especially checking out the surfers on Steamer Lane.
I’ve been walking along West Cliff Drive my whole life, including when I was little enough to be in a stroller for part of the way. My parents owned a house within walking distance of West Cliff. It’s great for walking, running, biking, or cruising in your car with all the windows down. The shaggy, Suessian coastal cypr...
Long Marine Lab in Santa Cruz
In my book A Very Typical Family, which is set in Santa Cruz, CA, two of the characters work at the real-life Long Marine Lab. In fact, they have their own lab there. (At least one reader, who identified themself as a marine biologist working in Santa Cruz, did not appreciate this, but that’s why authors aren’t supposed to read those reader comments.)
The Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory is a marine research facility operated by UC Santa Cruz’s Institute of Marine Sciences. There is a public arm...
The blue whale skeleton in Santa Cruz
In my book A Very Typical Family, which is set in Santa Cruz, CA, Natalie’s brother Jake work as a marine biologist at Long Marine Lab in Santa Cruz, and so does Natalie’s love interest, Asier. In one scene, Natalie and Asier meet near the iconic blue whale skeleton at Long Marine Lab.
As a kid, I was a docent at Long Marine Lab. One of my jobs was to tell visitors about this 87-foot-long blue whale skeleton at what is now the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. UC Santa Cruz says it’s the world’s ...
