National Moonshine Day Eve
When I tell people I chose National Moonshine Day as the release date for the paperback of Whiskey and Old Stogies they say, “I never heard of such a day.” Believe it or not, you can find a celebration for any day. Like today, June 2, is National Bubba Day. Find details at the National Day Calendar website and register a national day of your own. Will have to check tomorrow but they list National Moonshine day as June 5, old info.

Is this novel funny?
When I did my cover reveal for Whiskey and Old Stogies on Facebook I received mixed reactions. A lot of people loved it. Some people seemed impressed by the Fannie Flagg quote at the top. I gave Fannie an early advanced reader copy when we interviewed her in 2016 for the documentary Thirty Years of Literary Excellence about the history of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. What makes a novel historical fiction?
I list Whiskey and Old Stogies as Historical Fiction. According to Wikipedia, “An essential element of historical fiction is that it is set in the past and pays attention to the manners, social conditions and other details of the depicted period.” In that sense the book holds up in the category.

Doing Research
I used John C. Campbell‘s book The Southern Highlander and His Homeland to do a lot of research for my writing. Thanks to fellow author Lorin Cary for loaning me that book about twenty-five years ago. I still have it and can mail it back to him if he wants, otherwise I’ll continue to treasure it.
In this book I found the colloquial slur Jolene uses in Chapter One. It might offend people, which I think good because it shows her ignorance. Later on we see her character change, so keep that in mind...
