Having spent three years in England in my youth and five years in Germany as a youngish adult, I have a much higher tolerance for and appreciation of cooler weather. Alabama in the Spring … Continue reading "BABY IT’S COLD… IN REGENCY ENGLAND !"

OFF TO CHICHESTER

Our last Wellington archive was located at the Public Record Office in Chichester, West Sussex, where Vicky and I had rented the cozy cottage above. The cottage was full of charming period details, including the period staircase. You’ll understand why we left our bags on the ground floor for the duration of our stay. Travels with Victoria: WILTON HOUSE – Part One

On the edge of the city of Salisbury is one of England’s greatest country houses, the home of the Herbert family for almost five centuries. Wilton is one of those fabled British Country Houses which almost defy description. The interior, of amazing … Continue reading "Travels with Victoria: WILTON HOUSE – Part One"

Veni, Vidi., etc. The Romans in Britain

by Victoria Hinshaw Britain is dotted with Roman sites, often a surprise to visitors.  The Romans were here for 400 years….think back from today to 1618.  Seems like a very long time ago, but that’s how many centuries the Romans ruled most of Britain. As any first-year Latin student knows (as if there are any of them … Continue reading "Veni, Vidi., etc. The Romans in Britain"

THE MAN WHO MADE LISTS – GUEST BLOGGER JO MANNING – Part Two

So, then, after all this, how did he come to compile that outstanding reference work, Roget’s Thesaurus? It seems like such a departure from what his life was.It seemed, though, that ever since his childhood, Roget was fond of making lists. Kendall opines that this gave order to an otherwise confused, if not chaotic life, … Continue reading "THE MAN WHO MADE LISTS – GUEST BLOGGER JO MANNING – Part Two"
