“Pretty tall order,” Syl says.
“And dangerous,” Andrea says softly. “Y’all wanna be darn careful dealing with that man, Tony. Much as I want justice for Ty, I don’t anyone else to get hurt.”
Neither do I, which is why Stevens’s rackets need to be dismantled. He’ll keep hurting people until someone puts a stop to it.

And so we part, with plans to carry the fight to Stevens and whoever else dares to stand in our way. Braves words, at any rate. Penelope and I follow Shelly’s beat-up circa 2000 pickup truck onto I-80 and hang behind them for several exits to make sure nobody followed them.
“I worry about Annie’s safety,” I say. “Don’t we have an obligation to play it safe, to keep her out of the line of fire?”
“We do, but what keeps her safest, Tony?” Penelope asks. “I say putting Stevens away— ultimately, that‘s the best way to keep her safe.”
“Assuming she survives the effort.”

It seems that someone in LaSalle County is powerful enough to reach inside Stevens Correctional Center to kill an inmate and then successfully cover their tracks. Taking on this case will send me back to unearth more of that county’s secrets … poking the bear, so to speak. What if the bear turns on the inquisitive investigator? I was lucky to escape my last adventure in LaSalle County unscathed, personally if not professionally. I wonder if tempting fate twice might be one time too many.
