Ultimate Michigan Coastal Road Trip Guide: Lighthouses and Legends

Forget the ocean – look no further than Michigan for a truly unique coastal adventure. If you’re looking for a unique adventure and a beautiful drive, a Michigan coastal road trip should top your list. Why? There are 129 lighthouses in Michigan and 3,200 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Plus, Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state, dozens in the lower portion alone. Though I didn’t plan to see them all, or not even many. This fact spurred me to realize I hadn’t seen enough of the Michigan coastline. So, I set off on a road trip. Michigan’s West Coast Van Buren State Park I began my Michigan coastal road trip in Van Buren State Park on the lower west side of the state. Van Buren State Park, just a few miles south of South Haven, encompasses 400 acres along Lake Michigan. The park has a mile-long sandy beach, high dune formations, a big campground, and woodland trails. The big, old-growth trees are perfectly spaced for a hammock, and I set mine up first thing. The campsites are large and wooded, and just through the trees is Lake Michigan. From most spots in the campground, a 20-minute hike will […]

Visit a Rare Titanic Grave Site and Museum

The Titanic grave site and museum in Halifax is home to one of the world’s most grim and riveting stories. You’ll be surprised that you don’t know the half of it. There’s much more than James Cameron depicted in “Titanic,” including a cemetery with over 150 graves of Titanic’s victims. The Titanic exhibit is part of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I stopped by while on a nearly two-year-long solo road trip around the United States, Mexico and Canada. The story of the Titanic’s sinking is fascinating. When I learned there was a museum and grave site, off I went to explore. As a taphophile, I’ve often visited cemeteries worldwide if there’s a good story, unique beauty, or famous graves. All in the same section, one hundred and fifty Titanic grave sites fit the bill. I drove into Halifax from my rural Canadian hideaway. It was someplace in the middle of nowhere (Stewiacke), just over an hour away. Many revere Canada for its spacious, rolling countryside and this road trip to the city did not disappoint. I passed many signs warning, “Moose Crossing,” alas, I never crossed any and my hunt continued. Titanic history […]
