Step up and vote for your next Supreme Court…

Who has the last say in Washington? The justices of the Supreme Court! If you don’t think this geriatric group of politicized “legal experts” influences your life, just consider SuperPACs and the big money influence on the 2012 election engendered by the Citizens United decision. The Court has and will have considerable influence on future voting rights and women’s rights (overturn of the Voting Rights Act, Roe v. Wade, or equal pay for equal work, anyone?). Moreover, keying on that word “ger...

Pre-release excerpt from Come Dance a Cumbia…with Stars in Your Hand!

Summary:

The sci-fi thriller Come Dance a Cumbia…with Stars in your Hand! completes “The Chaos Chronicles Trilogy,” a vision of the future that is troubling, inspiring, and astounding. Survivors of the Chaos, the first book in the series, starts in dystopia and ends with hope for a new future on a planet in the 82 Eridani system. In Sing a Samba Galactica, the second book, humans find friendly ETs there and battle unfriendly ones on another colony and Earth, but if you thought they and their E...

Mr. Obama’s second term…

I’m not making predictions, mind you, because a long month with three debates can change things before voting day. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting question to ask: Will Mr. Obama’s second term be any different than the first? I’m making an assumption here, for the sake of trying to answer that question, namely, that he will have a second term. Current polling, even in battleground states, seems to indicate this. Moreover, Karl “Machiavelli” Rove and his cohorts are diverting funds to Senate...

Interview with thriller author Gina Fava…

As a special treat today, I offer you an interview with fellow thriller author Gina Fava. A Buffalo, NY native, Gina lives in New England with her husband, Jamie, and their two children. A writer of award-winning short stories, Gina Fava is working to publish two novels, The Race and The Sculptor, both suspense thrillers based in Rome, Italy. She’s currently writing her next thrillers in both series. She travels to Italy often to research first-hand the red wines that her characters imbibe. A...

News and Notices from the Writing Trenches #33…

#188: Interview on “Phalanges.” Gina Fava, also an author of thrillers, interviewed me for the Q/A section of her blog called “Phalanges.” I will review her here shortly. I also look forward to having her write a guest post for this blog on various topics. Meanwhile, check out her website. (www.ginafava.com) [Also, see my interview policy on my “Join the Conversation” webpage.]

#189: Try a book. I will soon have ten books (see below). Maybe it’s time to try one. They are all sci-fi thrillers,...

Now he’s the foreign policy expert?

Mr. Romney in his acceptance speech at the GOP convention didn’t mention Afghanistan once (definite fact) and I can’t remember him even mentioning foreign policy. He smartly was keeping his mouth shut. Neither he nor his running mate have any experience in foreign policy—correction: Unlike the heroes of The Book of Mormon, our lovable Mittens did his Mormon missionary work in Paris, a lot more cushy assignment than Uganda. The Book of Mormon guys received more foreign policy experience than h...

Insiders and outsiders…

During this political silly season, quoting candidates out of context is more popular than discussing concrete policy. Mr. Romney jumped on Mr. Obama’s comment about Washington insiders in Mitt the Twit’s bumbling haste to cover up his 47% remarks that insulted about 99% of the American voting public (there’s always that 1%). What did Mr. Obama really mean?

It’s obvious, of course, when not taken out of context. He was referring to involving the American public more in the political process be...

Fascism and the illegitimate President…

Currently the GOP is perpetrating an egregious attack on democracy: legal battles are still going on in key electoral states where Republicans are fighting to sustain voter ID requirements and curtail early voting. One GOP member has stated openly that winning the battle of the photo ID in Pennsylvania will guaranteed that Romney wins that state. (These battles are more important than the attacks on collective bargaining, as bad as they are. In Wisconsin, a federal judge ruled that the Govern...

An interview with Santa Claus…

[I needed to deliver a message to Santa Claus recently. I finally found him on an undisclosed and clothes-optional Caribbean island with the help of Rudolph, who has a big mouth as well as that well-known drunkard’s nose. Santa hadn’t told his elves where he was going and didn’t take his iPhone 4S. He had wi-fi in his beach hut, though, so I talked to him via Skype.]

Steve: Santa, I wanted to tell you I finally finished editing that trilogy and it will be released soon. You can put it on Chris...

Fanatical savages…

Among the world’s five great religions, Islam is the youngest. It shows. Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, and Jews have generally matured enough to get beyond fanatical and savage protests in reaction to perceived insults to their religion and they punish those who participate in such protests—not so Muslims. People in the other religions shrug off the intolerance, turn their backs on it, and go on with their lives—not so Muslims. If Islamic believers who have matured beyond fanatical responses...
