Drones and special forces…

Readers of this blog know that I’ve long supported drones and special forces as effective ways to battle terrorism. Now these tactics are coming into question in the liberal media. The criticism contains the usual complaint that innocents can be killed. It also complains about due process, especially for those terrorists who are also U.S. citizens. The Obama administration has recognized the effectiveness of these policies. Ironically, both sides of the political aisle are criticizing. Maybe...

The making of an ebook…

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post, let me tell you about the release of my new sci-fi thriller,The Golden Years of Virginia Morgan. Caveat emptor: much of this post is pure marketing, so you’re allowed to skip over those parts. But readers and writers alike might be interested in this concrete example of today’s indie self-publishing steps. Moreover, as a treat, at the end of this post is an excerpt from the novel.

The story: Those who follow me probably already know the theme of the book: Wh...

Between writer and reader…

There are many wonderful things about ebook self-publishing that make it attractive to writers. An obvious one that comes to mind is that the writer can minimize what stands between him and the reader. I’m talking logistics, of course, as well as time delay. One can consider a situation where event X occurs in the real world and there’s an ebook about it only a few weeks later. After finishing a manuscript (MS), the delay needed to reach the reading public is minimal.

In fact, readers rule in...

Toward a new economy…

Often there exists a sentiment at the beginning of the New Year that can be summarized as “out with the old, in with the new!” No, I didn’t just wake up from my New Year’s Eve hangover, but I’ve been thinking all the month of January about how that sentiment applies to the economy. I’m no expert on economic theory. To me, micro- and macro-economics are all mixed up in my head. I was always more into mathematical economics anyway. I was also always acutely aware that economics will never becom...

News and Notices from the Writing Trenches #41…

#232: Follow-up about Amazon reviews. For more evidence that Amazon reviews in general represent meaningless information for potential book buyers (for more, see my three-part series a few weeks ago), consider the treatment Randall Sullivan’s Untouchable, a bio of Michael Jackson, recently received. According to the NY Times, a group called Michael Jackson’s Response Team to Media Attacks wrote enough one-star reviews to knock the book off Amazon. Whether you call this free speech or bullying...

Roles…a short story gift…

Another freebie…this short story will introduce you to NYPD homicide detective Sgt. Rolando Castilblanco. You might not have met him before. This was written after Pop Two Antacids and Have Some Java, an anthology about some other cases he lived through with his partner, Dao-Ming Chen. They are main characters in The Midas Bomb and Angels Need Not Apply. They will also be featured in The Golden Years of Virginia Morgan…coming soon! A third yarn about Castilblanco helping Chen, who has been fr...

Idealogues, young and old…

Secretary Hillary Clinton’s grilling by the Senate committee is more evidence that Congress has become a brothel where members prostitute themselves to ideological America. While Dem leadership (Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Reid) also makes a habit of doing this, the GOP senators hounding the secretary had no desire to discover the truth—they only wanted to score points in order to make themselves more attractive to their paying customers, the ultra-conservative rich elites who give billions to Super PACs...
