Book Review: Five Stars for “The Day of Ezekiel’s Hope” by Donna VanLiere
This book does a fine job of dramatizing the Bible prophecies of the End Times and provides good Bible teaching, too.
This is a dramatization of the Bible’s end times prophecies. It’s the middle book of a 3-book series (in three books the author delivers a tale that took over a dozen books in the old Left Behind series). A friend recommended this series and I’ve just read the first two books.
This book depicts events after the rapture of Christians (that’s in book 1). It shows the horrors that will be faced in the first half of the seven-year tribulation. The author (Donna VanLiere, known for “The Christmas Shoes”) says she didn’t feel she could adequately depict how bad that time will be. Perhaps that’s so (it will be beyond terrible) but she did a plenty fine job of dramatizing the horrors of the tribulation based on the book of Revelation.
She also shows the courage of the tribulation saints (people who become Christians during the tribulation) and some of the ways that God will reach out to people and call them to join His family (E.G., these tribulation saints, the 144,000 Jewish evangelists and the two witnesses in Jerusalem who preach strongly and point out the evils of the antichrist and his minions).
Besides telling the dramatic fictional story, the author includes a section (“Where in the Word”) that provides the Bible support for the story. This section is written so that regular folks can understand it, but well documented with plenty of references to the Bible and other Christian writers. The novel will entertain the reader even as the “Where in the Word” section is educational and a good resource for the future. Hopefully many readers will be drawn to their savior.
This series by Donna VanLiere and the “Tribulation Pilgrims’ Progress Series” (by Mark Tredecim) are independent of each other, but dramatize and teach about the same Bible prophecies. They have some interesting connections in their fictional tales. E.G., both place the rapture on a weekday, at a moment just before the noon hour (Eastern time). Both also place the Ezekiel 38 war between the rapture and the tribulation (the Bible does not specify whether it will be before the Tribulation or instead during the early days of the tribulation).
These are just interesting coincidences, as neither author has received any inside message from God and they did not coordinate their writing. Amusing note- both series include a point where one fictional character tells another character, “let’s go, Brandon.” When art is based on Bible Prophecy, odds are good that life will imitate art.

There is a growing trend of toward censorship of wide swaths of content in many segments of news, communications and publishing. How might the Bible fare if it was subjected to the standards and scrutiny of progressive (so-called) fact checkers? The result might be something like the DFIV Bible (Democratically Fact-checked Improved Version) presented in this video.
The apostle Paul wrote, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NLT).
When reading the Bible, it’s tempting to skip over some chapters or verses in favor of ones that seem easier to understand and seem more interesting. But you’ll miss something if you do. That’s a reason why a whole-Bible-in-a-year reading program (like the “One Year Bible” published by Tyndale) is worthwhile.
Some pastors prefer to mostly preach messages related to health and wealth and steer clear of Bible text addressing sin and judgment. Though prophecy comprises over a quarter of the Bible, some pastors seem to avoid it, particularly the end times prophecies of Revelation and Daniel. These are very important topics, particularly for people living today. That’s why these end times prophecies are central to the “Tribulation Pilgrims’ Progress” series of novels by author Mark C. Tredecim (www.markctredecim.com).

Texas, We have lift-off!
The state of Texas has played a critical role in the U.S. space program. The novel Twilight of the Church Age features many characters and locations in Texas. Of course, that’s in addition to characters and places in Missouri, New Jersey and elsewhere in the U.S.A.

Earth first! We’ll mine the other planets later.
Just about the time that Tesla was getting started, Pixar (Disney) released an excellent animated movie called “WALL-E.” It’s a movie for kids that adults can enjoy, too. This was back in 2008, when you didn’t need to have your finger on the fast-forward button to protect the kids from unsuitable content in a Disney movie. If you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it.
The movie is set hundreds of years in the future. WALL-E is a cute and diligent maintenance/salvage robot, doing the best he can to fulfill his mission. Ultimately, his mission grows bigger and he helps save the day. During the movie, we learn that this fictional earth became environmentally unsound, with mountains of consumer waste everywhere. Humanity departed from the earth on interstellar cruise liners. The passengers are overserved, overfed and underworked, with everything done for them by robots.
WALL-E depicts the despoiling of the earth by people. Easy to imagine that (take a trip into the street camping world of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle). Gross and dangerous! The movie doesn’t dig into how first-world lifestyles might have impacted the poorer countries of the world. Or explain how they created and stocked sufficient spaceships to transport 8+ billion people to safety.
If we were to pull back the curtain in WALL-E’s world, we’d probably learn the poorer countries were decimated by the policies of the pampered elites in Europe and North America. The poor countries were mined for minerals (like cobalt, copper, lithium, nickel and rare earth elements) without regard for their people or environments. These were processed by coal-powered factories in China into batteries and components for electric cars and for unreliable solar and wind power gear. When those batteries and devices failed, the hazardous remains were sent to poor countries for salvage and disposal. Meanwhile, these poor countries were denied many benefits of this age: man-made fertilizer, pesticides, engineered seeds, internal combustion engines and reliable electricity. All in the ego-feeding cause of “saving the planet.”
When it came time to leave this fictional disaster, there was plenty of room on those luxurious space liners for the “Great Reset” elites of “WALL-E world.” But most of the 8+ billion people were probably left behind, in a hostile environment unsuitable for life.
The excellent 2020 book “Apocalypse Never” by Michael Shellenberger documents the hypocrisy and lunacy in the progressive green energy and climate disaster movement and the disregard for third world peoples. I’m looking forward to the new (September 2022) book by Henry Sanderson titled “Volt Rush.” Early reviews suggest Sanderson explores these subjects and describes the consequences if these progressive dreams should be fulfilled. “WALL-E world,” here we come.
Today, back here on earth, I’m not worried about progressive foolishness and malevolence bringing us to the environmental and economic dystopia of a “WALL-E world.” God is in control. Through Bible prophecy, God tells us how this world will end. But He has withheld the exact timing from us. We can’t know the “when,” but Jesus tells us to be alert and watch for the signs. Evaluating the current circumstances and trends through the lens of Scripture, I believe that we are near the tipping point. That’s when the Supply of Sin on the earth has grown great enough and the Demand for Salvation (through Jesus) falls low enough. At an exact moment set by God the Father, Jesus will open the first scroll in heaven and the judgment of the Tribulation will fall upon the earth.
God’s judgment will include unimaginable environmental damage, combined with the consequences of wars, plagues, famine, natural disasters, demonic attacks and the evil totalitarian rule of the antichrist. Everyone not already rescued through the Rapture will suffer during the Tribulation; most will die. Be alert- it’s coming soon and it will continue for seven years, when Jesus returns to end it. But the story has a happy ending for everyone who sides with God.
We don’t know when the tipping point will occur and we can’t just sit back and wait for it. It could be years, months or weeks from now. Until then, Christians need to resist evil and do good. Pray for another great awakening and revival, so that many more will come to salvation.

That Hideous Strength (life imitates art)
“That Hideous Strength” takes place primarily in an English college town and especially within the community of academics and professors from the colleges. A lot of the story involves internal political intrigues involving the dusty self-important college faculty and administration.
There are lots of references to historical English figures (real and fictional), which American readers of this century may not recognize. The first half of the book is a slow slog for this reason.
The element in the community that calls itself “progressive” and English elites are navigating the arrival of an organization called “N.I.C.E” (the National Institute of Coordinated Experiments).
In the second half of the book, it becomes evident that “N.I.C.E.” is far from “nice.” In fact, they are the puppet for supernatural forces (the “Macrobes”) that wishes to remake the earth, to the great detriment of the humans, animals, and plants that inhabit the planet.
These supernatural forces don’t like what God created and want to create a sterile replacement. Most living things (including people) would be removed or reengineered. The N.I.C.E. folks have launched the war and it’s up to the humbler people (and some great supernatural help from God’s side) to save the day.
The book is make more difficult by the dusty English background. But it is still relevant as commentary and warning. As I read this novel, I thought, “You could take this book’s manuscript and do some simple word substitutions. The result would be a very credible image of our current world.”
For example, replace the English colleges and locations with American equivalents from the Ivy League and Northeast U.S. Replace the English figures with prominent members of the radical progressive political, academic and scientific communities. Replace “N.I.C.E.” with “World Economic Forum.”
The Great Reset and Green New Deal sound a great deal like the programs pushed by the N.I.C.E. and Macrobes. The transhumanist agenda of “That Hideous Strength” sounds a lot like the current attacks upon the nuclear family, promotion of abortion and the sexualization of children. Once again, it seems that life is imitating art.
Spoiler alerts: Good wins in “That Hideous Strength.” In real life, the Day of the Lord is coming soon. Good wins.

Coming Soon: The One Day War
In the Bible book of Ezekiel (chapters 38 and 39), the prophet describes an upcoming one-day war. Iran, Turkey and Russia team up with some lesser nations to attack Israel. God intervenes in this war, fully protecting Israel and bringing total destruction upon the powerful attacking forces. The speed, nature and extent of Israel’s victory brings the parties to urgently pursue peace. This seven-year peace treaty facilitates the rise of the Antichrist.
The modern nation of Israel has a great win-loss record in the several wars since it was established in 1948 (it is undefeated). It is believed to have dozens of nuclear weapons and has a capable air force and air defense system. Israel also has close ties with the U.S.
Considering all this, why would these countries launch such an attack upon Israel, especially since the Bible tells how badly it will turn out for them? Perhaps the current energy crisis in Europe, Russia’s expansionist moves, and the natural gas off the coast of Israel have something to do with this. Certainly, the evil in men’s hearts is a major factor.
The Bible also tells of the upcoming event (the Rapture) where all believers in Jesus Christ are instantly taken up to Heaven by Him, protecting them from the horrors of the seven-year Tribulation. The Bible does not provide an explicit timeline for the sequencing of the Ezekiel 38 war and the Rapture.
My novels, Twilight of the Church Age and The Great New Deal, depict the Rapture as being before the Ezekiel 38 War, but some best-selling authors have put the Ezekiel 38 War before the Rapture in their books. In Twilight of the Church Age, a fictional study group called EZE38 explores the topic.
Why might this timing be important to you? Though the Rapture and Ezekiel 38 War each take just one day (or less), they will have world-wide impact. They will come suddenly; current world conditions and trends suggest that will be soon. Many people will die during these events; if they have not accepted Jesus as savior by then, they won’t get a second chance. Others will be left behind to face the terrors of the Tribulation, where they have a limited-time opportunity to turn to Jesus as savior.
