Excerpt: The Production Room Scene

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby book in 3D. This cover features a couple standing in front of a graphic color display. She is pregnant.

My latest romcom Josh and Gemma Make a Baby launched January 25th, 2022 and I wanted to share a third excerpt of the production room scene with you. If you are following me on social media, you may have seen the video trailer of “The Production Room” scene. If you haven’t seen it, go over to

https://www.instagram.com/sarahreadyauthor/

or

https://www.tiktok.com/@sarahreadyauthor

to check it out!

Here is an excerpt of Josh and Gemma Make a Baby and an introduction to Josh:

The production room scene from Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

I sit in the lobby while I wait for Josh to finish up in “The Production Room.”

I cross and uncross my legs, shifting impatiently as I glance at the clock. What’s taking so long? He’s been back there at least fifteen minutes.

After the ultrasound, Dr. Ingraham ran over my bloodwork and urine. Everything looked good, my AMH, my thyroid, my STD tests, everything was normal. Josh had his blood taken for STDs and then a nurse with a pixie cut and sequined glasses led him away to produce a sample.

I glance at the clock. That was seventeen minutes ago.

Two couples have been called to the back.

There are only three other couples left in the room and a woman sitting by herself in the corner. She has a magazine held in front of her, and she’s wearing a wig, a baseball hat and huge sunglasses. In New York City, the only thing that can mean is she’s either a fugitive from justice, or she’s anywhere from mildly to wildly famous and doesn’t want to be spotted by the autograph-seeking masses around her.

I try to ignore everyone. I tap my foot and stare at the big Georgia O’Keeffe painting on the far wall.

When I’ve nearly decided that the painting is one hundred percent definitely a flower, not part of the female anatomy like I thought last time, my phone buzzes.

I open my purse and look at the screen.

It’s a text from Josh.

Josh: I’m in the production room.

I stare at the phone, mystified as to what I’m supposed to say to that.

Gemma: Okay?

Josh texts a picture. It’s of a room. I’m guessing it’s “The Production Room.” Unfortunately, it’s also the saddest, most depressing-looking room I’ve ever seen. It’s about six foot by four foot. The walls are stark white and the floor is old gray tile. There’s one of those wall collection metal shelves for the sample jar, a tissue dispenser in the wall, a garbage can, and printed instructions taped to the wall. That’s it. No color, no decoration, no dirty magazines, no flat screen TV playing porn to get a guy in the mood. Nothing.

I text Josh back.

Gemma: Is that the production room?

Josh: Yeah…

I wait. Josh is typing another message.

When it comes through I stare at my phone in surprise.

Josh: It’s not working.

I look around the waiting room, and I’m sort of surprised that no one is staring at me in shock. Did Josh Lewenthal just tell me that he can’t produce a sample?

The news plays on a muted TV near the scheduling desk. All the other couples are either watching it, looking at their phones, or reading a magazine. No one is paying me any attention. I quickly type back.

Gemma: What’s not working?

Josh: It’s a lot of pressure. I need some inspiration. This room sucks.

I blow out a breath.

I mean, I get what he’s saying. It would be hard to get in the mood in a room that looks like a Russian prison cell. The tissue is for you to weep into.

I shift back into my chair and try to think of a solution. Ah, got it.

Gemma: Look up porn on your phone.

I blush and pull at the winter scarf around my neck. I can’t believe I just wrote that.

Josh: I can’t believe you just wrote that.

Ha. I write him back.

Gemma: Well?

Josh: It’s not working. Send me a pic of some skin.

Excuse me? Did he just ask me to send him a dirty picture? Of myself?

Gemma: No way.

Josh: Come on. I need help.

I close my eyes. Fine. If you want something bad enough, you’ll do whatever it takes to get it, even text dirty pics to “The Production Room.”

I stand up and stride to the desk.

“Can I have the key to the bathroom please?”

The same scheduler that was completely disinterested in me last week tosses the key at me.

“Thanks,” I mumble, terrified that she somehow has mind-reading powers and knows exactly what I’m about to do.

I shut the bathroom door behind me. Surprisingly, the bathroom’s really clean. They must’ve actually sent someone over to clean it after Dr. Ingraham called. Huh.

My phone buzzes again.

Josh: They’re knocking on the door, Gemma. The pressure is a bit much here. Skin?

I snort. Then I try to think of the least embarrassing place I can take a picture of that may elicit some sort of reaction.

Ah, got it.

I lift my leg up and set my boot on the toilet. Then I pull up my pants and take a snapshot of my calf. I hit send.

I yank my pantleg down and wait for Josh’s reply.

Josh: Seriously?

I smile. Hey, I tried.

What else, what else?

Well, no one in the history of ever, complained about my breasts, soooo.

I pull off my winter coat, lift up my sweater over my head, dip my camisole low and take a cockeyed cleavage shot of my breasts. As I try to pull my sweater back down I stumble over the trash can and fall back onto the toilet. I hit with a thud and the trash can rattles, making a racket.

I wait a second. My heart beating hard.

There’s a knock on the door.

“You alright in there?”

Oh jeez. It’s the disinterested scheduler.

“Good. Fine. Just…busy.”

Oh lordy. Busy?

I hit send on the photo of my boobs. Then I try to pull myself back together.

My phone vibrates.

Josh: Not a breast man.

Are you kidding me? Not a breast man? I sent him a deep cleavage shot that should have soared him into boner territory.

Gemma: Then what?

I scowl down at the phone.

There’s another knock on the bathroom door.

“Just a minute,” I call. “I’m busy in here!”

I stare at my phone as I wait for Josh to reply.

“Come on…”

I pace back and forth in the small space. Finally, Josh starts to text. Deletes it. Starts to text again, deletes it.

Gemma: Come on. What?

Finally his text comes through.

Josh: Just send a shot of your bare shoulders, or your back.

What? What the weird? Fine.

I pull off my coat and scarf, strip off my sweater, camisole, and bra, and stand with my bare back to the mirror. I look behind me. My hair is down and falls over my shoulders in a straight dark line. My shoulders are narrow, and my back shows the exaggerated curve of my figure. I never noticed or thought about it before, but looking at my smooth skin, the gentle flare of my hips and the curve of my spine, there’s something strangely erotic about a woman’s bare back. I take a shuddering breath. My nipples go hard from the cold air. I look over my shoulder at myself, there’s a strange look in my eyes. I don’t think about it. Instead, I lift up my camera, and snap a shot of my back in the mirror.

It’s a half-blurry shot, my head is turned away, and my back is exposed. You can just barely see the edges of my breast under my lifted arm. It’s almost…erotic.

I stare at the photo for a moment, and then I hit send.

Want a quick read?

Check out my latest novella Love Letters, available now.

Enemies in life…in love by letter.

For fans of You’ve Got Mail and The Shop Around the Corner, Love Letters : a Novella from romcom author Sarah Ready is available now.

Do you remember those stories where a lonely, single, yet surprisingly attractive woman finds a romantic letter and starts writing a hunky man from the past, only to fall in love?

Yeah. That’s not this story.

Believe me. I spend my days archiving stunningly romantic three hundred year old love letters. If it could happen to anyone, it would be me.

But these archived letters have given me the basis for a list of true-love requirements. The man I fall for must be: sensitive, smart, love history, be kind to little old ladies and stray dogs alike, and…be the exact opposite of Corbin Ryan – lover of finance, efficiency, and crushing dreams.

Plenty of people, aka everyone, says my list is unrealistic. I may have agreed, except I’m holding a letter in my hand. I found it in a library book, written by a stranger, and he’s everything I’ve ever said I wanted.

Unlike all the stories, he’s real. The only trouble is, the more we write, the more I begin to question, can you really, truly fall in love with a man you’ve never met? And what happens when you finally write, P.S. Let’s Meet.

An enemies to lovers, hidden identity romance in New York City. Love Letters is a 10,000 word novella.

Available Now: Josh and Gemma Make a Baby!

I am so happy to announce the release of my latest RomCom novel, Josh and Gemma Make a Baby! Available now beginning January 25th, 2022.

After a decade of disastrous relationships and an infertility diagnosis, Gemma doesn’t want a Mr. Right (or even a Mr. Right Now), she just wants a baby.

And all she needs is an egg, some sperm, and IVF.

So Gemma makes a New Year’s resolution: have a baby.

Josh and Gemma make a deal. An unemotional, businesslike arrangement. No commitments, just a baby. What could go wrong?

Best new romcom Josh and Gemma Make a Baby by Sarah Ready is available now on tablet, iPhone, and print.

Enter Josh Lewenthal: a laid back, relaxed, find-the-humor-in-life kind of guy. The polar opposite of Gemma. He’s also her brother’s best friend. For the past twenty years Josh has attended every Jacobs’ family birthday, holiday, and event – he’s always around.

So Gemma wants to make a deal. An unemotional, businesslike arrangement. No commitments, just a baby.

To Gemma’s surprise, Josh agrees.

They have nothing in common, except their agreement to make a baby and their desire to keep things businesslike.

But the thing about baby-making…it’s hard to keep it businesslike, it’s nearly impossible to keep it unemotional, and it’s definitely impossible to keep your heart out of the mix. Because when you’re making a baby together, things have a way of starting to feel like you’re making other things too – like a life, and a family, and love. And when the baby-making ends, you wish that everything else didn’t have to end too.

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby is available everywhere now. I can’t wait for you to read it!

Check out this Excerpt from Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby book in 3D. This cover features a couple standing in front of a graphic color display. She is pregnant.

My latest romcom Josh and Gemma Make a Baby is coming out January 25th, 2022 and I wanted to share an excerpt of the book with you. Gemma Jacobs is determined to be a single mother by choice. After struggling to find an anonymous donor she feels comfortable using, enter her brother’s best friend Josh. Here is an excerpt of Josh and Gemma Make a Baby and an introduction to Josh:

Sneak peek #2 from Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

Josh is on my bed.

What the heck?

It’s like he has some sort of super-psychic power that lets him know when a woman needs him. I think about him stealing my undies all those years ago and I realize that yes, he probably does have a secret power. Some sort of man radar—mandar.

We haven’t really spoken in years, except for the casual greeting at the New Year’s party or a “hi, how are you” at a random friends and family get together. Yet here he is, right when I need him.

I step into my bedroom and shut the door. Josh is spread out on my pink lace coverlet, his arms behind his head, and his legs crossed—the picture of relaxation. He’s in his standard outfit, faded jeans and a tight T-shirt depicting some obscure graphic novel character. His black hair needs a trim and he has at least two days’ worth of dark stubble on his face.

Even though I’m indifferent to him as a person and I know for a fact he’s not my type, my lady parts still clench. He’s that good looking.

He smirks at me, like he knows the effect he’s having. Here’s the thing about Josh, he’s completely unable to take life seriously. It’s like the whole universe is a funny joke to him, and he’s just living his life so he can be amused.

When he graduated from high school he was voted the most likely to succeed. He was captain of the football team, the basketball team, homecoming king and the valedictorian. Everyone thought he was going places. Especially me.

After he graduated from college he took a job at a tech start-up, worked his way up the ranks to VP, and then according to my brother, he just woke up one day and decided to quit. He walked into the office, took a box out of the supply closet, packed up his desk, and walked out. Ever since then he’s been doing his web comic thing. But I guess if he’s living with his dad again, it’s not going all that well.

I look him over. The thing is, I’m not sussing him out as a prospective husband, I don’t care about his career goals, how big his paycheck is, or whether he lives in his dad’s basement. I don’t care about his potential or non-potential as a life mate. I’m thinking about his genetics. And his genetics are just fine.

I close the door with a sharp snick.

“What are you doing on my bed?” I ask.

His eyes, always full of sharp intelligence, take in my sauce-covered dress and the blush still lingering on my cheeks.

“What are you doing covered in barbecue?” A small smile flits over his lips and his forehead wrinkles as he takes in my appearance.

My outfit from earlier is folded in a neat pile and sitting on my dresser. Josh starts to stand up.

“Stay there. I need to talk to you.”

I decide that rather than risk him leaving while I change, I’ll talk to him covered in sauce.

“Alright.” He scoots over and pats my bed.

I give him a look and he shrugs. “Sorry. I was up all night finishing a storyboard. Whenever I stayed the night with Dylan, your mom would always give me your bed to sleep in. I didn’t think, it just seemed natural to…”

He trails off when he sees the expression on my face. I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that Josh has apparently been sleeping in my childhood bedroom for years.

I look at my dresser and realize that my teenage diary is in the top drawer hidden under my underwear. My skin prickles with, yup, that’s embarrassment. I look at the dresser then at Josh, but he doesn’t seem any different than usual. Maybe he’s not a snooper. Probably, yes, probably he never read it. Because if he had…errr…my teenage self was not shy about fantasizing about him.

I settle onto the mattress next to him.

He clears his throat and scoots over. “So what’s up?”

Oh God.

Am I really going to do this?

Can I do this?

It seemed perfectly reasonable and normal when I was planning it out after my doctor’s appointment. I looked more into donor sperm and weighed the benefits and detriments of donor versus Josh. Every way I looked at it, Josh came out on top.

He gives me a funny look. “Gemma? What’s up? You alright?”

“I need your sperm,” I blurt out.

Josh starts to choke, then he coughs. His face turns red and he hits his chest.

Oh no. I’ve killed him.

He coughs and his eyes water.

I slap his back and he shakes his head.

Maybe I shouldn’t have just blurted it out like that, but I was nervous and I didn’t think.

Finally, he takes a wheezing breath and says, “Come again?”

“I…I need your sperm?”

I smile at him. The look he gives me makes my hand fly to my mouth in an effort to contain the laugh bubbling up from my chest. Oh jeez, I’ve lost my brain. I should’ve written talking points or a speech or something.

“You want to have sex?” Josh asks. He looks really confused. “Gemma. You really have to work on your pick-up lines.”

I shake my head. But he’s already starting to lift his shirt up. I catch a glimpse of rock-hard abs. “If you want to, we can. But we’ll have to hurry. The New Year’s Resolution reading is soon. We have maybe ten minutes. Not that I can’t blow your mind in ten minutes.”

I scoot back and make a strangled sound.

He takes in my expression and starts to snicker.

“Kidding. Gemma, I’m kidding,” he says, and he drops his shirt.

I nod and blow out a long, mind-clearing breath. “Sorry, I didn’t say that right. What I meant to say was, ummm, we’ve known each other a long time.”

“Twenty-four years,” he agrees.

“Right. We grew up in the same town. Went to the same school. You’re my brother’s best friend. You come to our holiday parties, birthdays. You’re always around.”

I scrutinize his face to see if he gets where I’m going. Unfortunately, he just looks confused.

“I feel like I know you pretty well. I can say that you’re a decent guy.”

He frowns. “Thanks.”

“If I ask you something, do you promise not to tell Dylan, or anybody?”

Josh leans back and studies me. “Gem, I don’t think we should have sex.”

I close my eyes. “No. No, jeez. Obviously. Ugh, did it once, got the T-shirt.”

I open one eye and look at him, then I open the other.

He grins at me. “The T-shirt huh?”

Sneak Peek Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby book in 3D. This cover features a couple standing in front of a graphic color display. She is pregnant.

My latest romcom Josh and Gemma Make a Baby is coming out January 25th, 2022 and I wanted to share a sneak peek of the book with you. This story, set in New York City, follows Gemma Jacobs’ journey to single motherhood and self discovery. Here is a sneak peek and an introduction to Gemma:

Sneak peek from Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

When I was a little kid, I worshiped Josh Lewenthal, now, I couldn’t care less about him, I just need his sperm.

I’ll be the first to admit, I have no idea how to go about getting it, but as my obscenely sexy boss, famed self-help guru Ian Fortune, always says, “anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

That’s my motto for this year. Starting today, January first, I’m going to believe that anything is possible—that magic can happen. And after thirty-two years of being average in nearly every way, magic will be a welcome change.

Josh and I grew up in a small river town a few hours north of New York City. It’s the type of town that has a Christmas tree in the square, a pumpkin carving contest in the fall, and an ice cream social in the summer. The houses are cookie-cutter cute, the yards are golf course green, and everybody waves hello. It’s a kid-friendly, all-American paradise. My family fit right in.

Josh moved to town with his dad when he was eight. Within days my mom warned me to stay away from him.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because he’s not the sort of boy that nice girls play with.”

“Why?” I asked again. I was in that “why” phase that all kids go through.

“Because I said so.”

Well.

My mom was right. I was a nice girl. She dressed me in pink poufy dresses and pigtails to prove it. But instead of listening to my mom I snuck out of the house and went and found Josh Lewenthal. I guess there’s a lesson there. Even when I was little I couldn’t take “because I said so” as an answer.

I found Josh kicking a ball in his backyard. He told me the reason nice girls couldn’t play with him was because he knew how girls got babies in their bellies. To prove it, he smacked a kiss on my mouth. I was terrified for weeks that I was going to blow up like a balloon and pop out a baby. After a month I realized that Josh Lewenthal was full of crap and that my mom had been right.

But that didn’t stop me from idolizing him. My brother Dylan and Josh became best friends. And like little sisters around the world I wanted to do everything they did and be everywhere they were.

When I was sixteen my big sister Leah came home from college for Christmas break. Within days she told me to stop ogling Josh.

“Why?” I asked. I was still in the “why” phase.

“Because if he catches you looking he’ll steal your underwear.”

I didn’t know what she meant. “Why?”

“Because he collects underwear for a hobby and pins them on his bedroom wall. He has almost every girl’s undies in this whole town. He’ll tear them off you and then do things.”

Leah lowered her voice to a whisper. “Marie Johnson said his hands are like an octopus’s. Everywhere at once.”

I was appalled and then intrigued. But, “I don’t think he’ll want my underwear. Dylan is his best friend. Plus, I’m not really into that kind of thing.” You know, being a nice girl and all.

“It doesn’t matter,” said Leah, full of big sister knowledge. “He just has to look at you and you’ll rip your undies off for him. He’s that good. An octopus, Gemma. You better stop ogling him.”

I was skeptical, to say the least.

But six months later, while I was cleaning up my parents’ garage after Josh and Dylan’s joint high school graduation party, Josh told me he’d miss me while he was in New York for college. Then, lo and behold, he stole my panties. Metaphorically, of course.

For the second time in my life, I spent another few weeks terrified that I was going to blow up like a birthday balloon and pop out a baby.

After weeks of toe-numbing worry followed by my period and sweet sagging relief, I realized that Josh Lewenthal was not worth my fascination/worship/idolization, that he was in fact an immature/emotionally constipated user.

I didn’t see him again for six years.

By the time he came back to town I’d been married, divorced, and was long past mooning over fantasies.

I had an apartment in the city and my current (amazing) job, social media marketing coordinator for acclaimed self-help guru Ian Fortune. And I had goals. Lots of goals.

I mean…today I have goals.

Okay. A goal.

And Josh Lewenthal, the man who knows how to make a baby, is integral to my success.

New Year’s Resolution:

Have a baby

Preferably with Josh Lewenthal

Meet Gemma Jacobs. She’s driven, energetic, and a positive thinker. She has a great career working for famed self-help guru Ian Fortune, she lives in a cute studio apartment in Manhattan, and her family is supportive and loving (albeit a little kooky). Her life is perfect. Absolutely wonderful.

Except for one tiny little thing.

Josh Lewenthal is a laid back, relaxed, find-the-humor-in-life kind of guy. The polar opposite of Gemma. He’s also her brother’s best friend. For the past twenty years Josh has attended every Jacobs’ family birthday, holiday, and event – he’s always around.

Gemma knows him. He’s nice (enough), he’s funny (-ish), he’s healthy (she thinks) and he didn’t burn any ants with a magnifying glass as a kid. Which, in Gemma’s mind, makes him the perfect option for a sperm donor.

Extract #4

Love, Artifacts, and You by Sarah Ready A treasure hunting action adventure romance that is out today!

Check out an excerpt and get your copy of this action adventure romance that is out today!

“Yes?”

“I’m going to carry you upstairs, tie you to a bed so you can’t get away, and make love to you all night long until your voice is hoarse from screaming my name. If you don’t want that, then you need to walk out the front door right now. Understand?”

She backs away from me, out of my arms. I watch her chest rise and fall as she takes in a shuddering breath.

I hold still, waiting for her assent, even though every instinct in me is telling me to take her upstairs and claim her as mine.

She reaches over to her dinner plate and shoves a piece of prosciutto covered chicken in her mouth, then another. She makes an appreciative sound. Then she takes a long gulp of wine.

What the hell?

She pops a tomato in her mouth.

“What are you doing?” I ask, although it comes out more as a groan.

She looks at me and a slow grin spreads across her face. “I figure, if I’m going to be kept up all night, then I’ll need my strength.”

She eats another piece of chicken and then licks the juices from her finger.

Holy hell.

“Is that a yes?” I ask. Please say that’s a yes.

She takes a drink of wine and then sets the glass onto the marble counter.

“Emma?” I say, my patience nearly gone.

She runs to me and I catch her in my arms. “Yes,” she says. “Yes. Yes. A thousand yesses, yes.”

Extract #3

An action adventure contemporary romance Love, Artifacts, and You by Sarah Ready

My latest action adventure contemporary romance book Love, Artifacts, and You launches October 26th! Check out the third sample from this upcoming romance. After being separated as teenagers, Emma was certain she would never see Andrew again…until now.

Emma:

I squint at him and try to catalogue what I’m seeing.

Tall.

Black hair.

Brown eyes so dark they almost look black.

Sun-dark skin.

A crooked nose broken too many times.

A raised white scar thin as a knife blade over his right eyebrow extending to his hairline.

He looks dangerous. Like a dangerous man. Like no one I’ve ever met.

I see all these parts, but I can’t put them together, because none of it makes sense.

He’s too tall, too wide, too hard, too intense, too…everything.

He’s Andrew, but not.

I don’t stop to think, I lift my hand and put it to the thick stubble covering his firm jaw. I run my fingers over the soft, prickly beginnings of a beard. He lets out a low growl. I feel it vibrate my fingers.

His eyes shift to my lips and he focuses on them like he’s Odysseus returned to Ithaca. Like he’s seeing his home, his love, for the first time in years.

“The sun,” he whispers. I don’t know what he means. I stroke his cheek at the ache in his voice.

He reaches down, his finger hovers over my lip and then he touches the freckle over my mouth. The one Andrew loved.

And that’s when the pieces snap together and my brain finally lets me understand what my soul knew before I even saw his face.

My heart slams against my ribs, aching to get out and go to him.

“Andrew?” I whisper, fear in my voice. Because what if it isn’t him? “You’re alive?”

His shoulders stiffen and his gaze flicks up to mine. The soft, yearning leaves his eyes and they shift to match the man with the long scar, the hard mouth and the crooked nose. But then, as quickly as they went hard, they soften again.

He lets out a silky laugh. “What do you think, Emma? Don’t I look alive?”
