Not All Light Is the Same
I’m learning a lot about my camera. My equipment is limited, but when it is used to its fullest, I can capture a good image. I am learning about lighting, as well. The right lighting can make a big difference. Through some research and conversation with other artists, I am learning how to maximize what I have. And if I can capture images of my paintings that are significantly better than the ones I am already using on the site, I will swap them.
Now Streaming, 2020, 20”x16” on canvas provides a good example. Without the original painting in front of you to use as a reference, the images just look like two slightly different images. But the newer version is truer to the painting, and that is what I am after: an image as true to the painting as possible.
Both versions were taken with the same camera, but the new version was achieved through better lighting and formatting (new knowledge).
Knowledge is power.
*Of course, the image I post and one you see also depends on your monitor and display settings. So many things!

Crunchy, Glazed Chicken Wings
I was lucky to meet Zé Kielwagen while the artist was working on an MFA at Michigan State University. I was directing SCENE Metrospace at the time, and Kielwagen was featured in several exhibitions.
These ceramic chicken wings were always one of my favorites. This holiday season, a friend snagged them from Lansing Art Gallery and gave them to me for Christmas. It was a fantastic surprise!
The wings look great on top of your upright piano which has been in the family for generations.
Art is so good for the soul.

Star Power, a Playlist
I’m looking forward to a time when cafe life can resume. When it comes to writing, the atmosphere of a cafe combined with noise canceling headphones really helps me level up.
I am having a hard time reading, and watching films. The concentration isn’t there; the ability to detach from reality and enjoy the narrative.
Here is another Spotify playlist!
Enjoy.

Reunited
I sold these two paintings a long time ago, back in 2006. But for some reason, I didn’t take a photo of the black, brown and red one. Didn’t matter, though, because the pair was hanging in the home of a good friend, and we met regularly for coffee and bull sessions. Then the pieces were moved to my friend’s Chicago pad. And then my friend moved to Illinois. For some reason, I thought the pieces were handed off to his daughter who lives on the East Coast. In short, I thought they were long gone. Thank you, Bill, for the photos!
These smaller pieces are part of the Lamb Series. I think that series has meant different things for different people, but for me that series captured the frame of mind I was in after we invaded Iraq in 2003.

Asylum Town, a Playlist
Been a while since I posted a playlist. So here goes…
Follow me on Spotify. I’ve transferred the art of making the mixtape from the 80s to the art of compiling the playlists of today.

Finding Away, New Painting
Another painting for The Sublime series! My mind is still preoccupied with future worlds, future travel, future physics, future technology. I am pleased with this new painting. It’s on Stonehenge paper (30”x22”).
Links are provided below the image for browsing the galleries and shopping at the store, and for places to purchase a copy of my coming-of-age novel, Your Silent Face, digital downloads only.

Different Light, Different Decisions
New painting in process. I’ve started looking at these paintings from the other side of the basement, and in different light. It changes decisions.

In bright light.

In less light.

I Wish That I Still Had Some of These Works of Art, Part 3
This is the final installment of this series of blog posts. More weirdness from the early days. All of this work was created before or around 2003.

This was made on the back of a tablet of paper. Roughly 7”x5” or "9”x6” as I recall. And it sold, at a show at Mr. Henry’s, a restaurant in the Eastern Market locale of Washington, D.C. Still love that place!

This early piece was acrylic and oil paintstick on a framed bulletin board (functional art!). This one also sold at a show in D.C. (at the old Eastern Market exhibition space), but I never did find out who purchased it. I hope it is still out there somewhere in the world!

This two-panel piece measured 80”x30”. It was part of a two-person show, with Jayme Theis, at Otherwise Art Gallery, curated by Alison Alfredson, in Old Town Lansing in 2003. It was my first show of paintings.

This painting was on masonite, 36”x48”. It was also part of that early Otherwise show. I think the painting was called Popular Disposition. Copy & Paste was just too obvious, haha. I was very fond of this painting.

In my mind, this is perhaps one of the strangest paintings I have ever made. It was in a show at Spiderhouse Gallery in Old Town Lansing in 2003, I think. There is no doubt in my mind that I painted over this one, haha.
