There is Always Hope
“I’m sorry. There is no hope,” the doctor ended his words with an emphatic sigh. I was only nineteen when I heard the four words that, looking back, have shaped my entire life afterward. The words reverberated in what felt like my hollow being. In that moment, my life force deserted my body. Shocked at first, then sunken into a depressive abyss, and then finally motivated by a profound desire to disprove him, I began my quest to restore my faltering health and overcome medical injury.
I had spent the previous year alternating between classes at Carleton University’s Journalism School and asleep, barely able to move from my bed. The conflict between the two had been increasingly moving in favour of my bedbound state. Indeed, I had been informed by the archaic male professor that if my “handicap prevented me from completing my studies, it would surely prevent me from a profession as a journalist.”
The dean at the school, with whom I had spent numerous afternoons as I sought a solution to what appeared to be the end of my capacity to continue with my journalism studies, finally asked me: “What makes you think you need a journalism degree to write?” She added, “I’ve come to know you over the last few months and, clearly, you are a smart young woman so what makes you think you need the degree to write?”
Over the years that followed, I clawed my way back from the brink of my own demise. And, with each rung I climbed upward on the ladder of health, I committed myself to learning the universal mysteries of healing found within the humble foods and plants that lay upon the earth. And, each time I did, I moved up another rung. Until, finally I had regained enough health to set pen to paper, or more accurately, nimble fingers to keyboard, pitching health article after health article, and then eventually, health book after health book.
In the same way I had clawed my health back from the clutches of the grim reaper, I bushwhacked my way through the jungle of rejection notices to find the scraps of success hidden among them, until I amassed article-after-article and book-upon-book, all of which bore my name. During those years, I kept the mantra: “there is always hope” alive in my mind and pulsating through my soul as an affront to the hopeless message I had heard so many years earlier.
As irony would have it, during my brief time at journalism school, I had committed much of the classic journalism text, The Elements of Style by Strunk and White to memory. It was many years later that I learned of E. B. White’s commitment to hope in a letter he penned:
“As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness.
Sailors have an expression about the weather: they say, the weather is a great bluffer. I guess the same is true of our human society – things can look dark, then a break shows in the clouds, and all is changed, sometimes rather suddenly. It is quite obvious that the human race has made a queer mess of life on this planet. But as a people we probably harbor seeds of goodness that have lain for a long time waiting to sprout when the conditions are right. Man’s curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that these same traits will enable him to claw his way out.
Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day.”
I agree with White that, no matter the hardships we face, we must hang on to hope. Over the last several months, I tirelessly worked to complete two additional books showcasing the hope that can be found and harnessed in nature and its remedies. At some point along my journey, my personal mantra of hope turned into my message of hope and the motivation for my continued writing about the healing and transformational power of nature. Even after the forests burn, fireweed rears its vibrant purple head, reminding us that hope is found everywhere in nature, and must be nurtured inside our hearts and souls as well.

Give the Gift of Health—Dr. Cook's Holiday Gift Guide
Make this holiday season a healthy one with gifts that will inspire joy and health for everyone on your list. Here are some of my favorite gift ideas:
Elate Cosmetics
After searching and experimenting for many years with a huge variety of so-called “natural” cosmetics, I finally discovered Elate Cosmetics and immediately fell in love. And, having sensitive skin and a strong reaction to most toxic chemicals and hidden fragrances, I am a good person to test the products. Elate’s products are the only ones I’ve found to be pure enough to wear or recommend.
The company is committed to using cruelty-free ingredients, ethical marketing, and sustainable practices. Additionally, the cosmetics are clean, vegan, 100% gluten-free (safe enough for those people with celiac), made in Canada, and even use green-certified, fair trade and reusable bamboo packaging, compacts, and palettes. They practice fair trade, use 90% organic ingredients, and completely avoid planet-polluting nanoparticles. Committed to “never compromis(ing) the health of any person, animal, or the planet,” I can’t help but feel good about my decision to use the products.
Unlike most of the “natural” products I’ve tried, Elate Cosmetics’ products just feel good on my skin. The lipsticks are creamy but long-lasting, the eyeliner is gorgeous but doesn’t leave my eyes feeling irritated or achy like most products I’ve used. The lipsticks, eye shadows, eyeliners, and other products come in a huge range of colors. The foundation superbly covers blemishes without feeling heavy and leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth afterward.
And, the company’s commitment to the environment is bar none. Consider that they don’t use any excess packaging, and go the extra mile for the planet: the pressed powder actually comes in seed paper that can be planted afterward to grow wildflowers or herbs. Elate Cosmetics goes the extra mile to create healthy, planet-friendly products that I feel great about using and recommending.
Lips & Lashes Kit (Includes Elate’s best selling Essential Mascara and a Better Balm or Lipstick all found within a reusable bamboo canister—no need to waste time gift-wrapping or great for gift wrapping, storing brushes, or holding delicates while travelling). $64 Canadian with your choice of several lip balm and lipstick colors.
Not sure what your friend, family member or coworker will want? Check out the Give a Ritual Kit which comes with your choice of a $50, $75, or $100 gift card in a reusable bamboo capsule ready to add blush, powder, or eye shadows, as well as the Essential Mascara.
Want to keep that gift under $25? No problem. Check out the classic red (or any other color you prefer) Grace Lipstick. It offers all the beauty with none of the harmful junk found in most cosmetics.
Urban Cultivator
The Urban Cultivator is my favorite indoor food growing product. My husband and I installed it our new kitchen, making certain our design incorporated the compact yet high-producing residential model, but it can be added to any kitchen as it comes with the option of a cutting-board top as well. Now we can enjoy microgreens, herbs and leafy greens year round...and they are grown right in our home. You can't beat that for fresh and nutritious!
For most of us, even the healthiest of foods we buy are shipped in from other locales and sit on store shelves for days before we buy them. And, let’s face it: if you’re like most people you’re probably worried about the recalls on grocery store greens. Not to mention that the decline in nutritional value is staggering during the shipping period and, as a result, our best intentions to eat a healthy diet are compromised. The Urban Cultivator delivers nutrient-packed produce from your kitchen to your plate in minutes. Your body reaps the rewards and your taste buds will thank you.
The Urban Cultivator requires virtually no assembly and is easy to use. It can be plumbed into your household water system or used independently but either way keeps the work to a minimum: simply add your seeds of choice to the growing medium and use the simple control panel to set the optimum growing conditions. Watch your food grow through the large glass window while you plan your delicious menu. Your Urban Cultivator harvest can be enjoyed in salads, sandwiches, soups, stews, smoothies and so much more. Let your imagination run wild!
The Urban Cultivator residential model is the size of a dishwasher and grows an abundance of produce for an average family. It can be plumbed into an existing dishwasher space or be used as a stand-alone appliance. I found it easy to use either way but am especially happy that I got my plumber to hook it up—now it waters and drains at the push of a button. Within days, I’m enjoying superfoods right out of my own kitchen garden. What could be better or healthier? Discover the great deal I’m offering for the holiday season here.
Microgreens are among the most nutrient-dense foods available to us. In other words, eating them is one of the single best things we can do for our health.
In a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, researchers found that microgreens contained up to forty times as many nutrients as their full-grown vegetable counterparts. The study found that microgreen leaves can contain up to 40 times more nutrients like vitamin C, carotenoids (beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin), and vitamin E, than their mature counterparts.
Cellfood
We can’t live without sufficient oxygen, yet most people breathe so shallowly due to stress, posture, and our sedentary lifestyles. Give the gift of oxygenation, the lack of which is a factor in most health conditions.
I love a liquid supplement called Cellfood®, which has the unique ability to split water molecules within the body, releasing oxygen and hydrogen at the cellular level. It doesn’t create free radicals, but instead bonds with any free radicals found in the body, transforming them into stabilized oxygen. In my experience, Cellfood® provides the deepest and most abundant cell oxygenation of any supplement I’ve tried. Additionally, it contains 129 trace minerals, enzymes, amino acids and electrolytes, thereby providing cellular nutrition.
Cellfood® has been shown in laboratory tests to destroy harmful bacteria and pathogens on contact without harming the body’s beneficial intestinal flora. Other benefits of Cellfood® include: the normalization of pH balance; strengthening of the immune system; support for lung and breathing function; improvement in brain function, alertness and concentration; and it increases the absorption of other supplements taken in the same 24-hour period.
Cellfood® is made from all-natural, plant-based ingredients, and is yeast-free and gluten-free. I’ve found in my clients that as they introduce more pure, stable oxygen into their system, it’s a matter of time before their body responds with new levels of vitality, energy, endurance and, most of all, profound wellbeing. VitaClay
There are many crockpots, instant cookers, and other types of cooking appliances on the market, I’m prefer the VitaClay. Not only can you cook soups, stews, chilli, chicken, fish, roasts, bone broth, vegan “bone” broth, curries, and vegetable dishes, it can all be done from an organic clay pot devoid of the toxic chemicals found in most other cookers. It’s better for your health and easy to clean as clay is the original non-stick cookware that lacks the carcinogens found in other types of non-stick pots.
What’s more: it’s four times faster than a conventional crockpot. And, unlike pressure cookers that cook quickly but can be dangerous to operate, the VitaClay preserves many more nutrients in your food.
You can set it for a delayed start so you can wake up to warm, cooked oatmeal or other delicious breakfast or a scrumptious dinner when you get home from work.
You can keep your meal hot for up to 12 hours on the “warm” feature and can even use the VitaClay to make effortless soups and soup stocks. You can cook dry beans or perfect rice without worrying about pots boiling over on the stove. Simply select the “rice” or “stew” option and let the VitaClay do the rest.
Now that I’ve tried the VitaClay, I can’t imagine cooking without it. It has a prominent spot in my newly-renovated farmhouse kitchen, helping me to create farm-inspired home cooking without the headaches or slaving over a stove.
Check out this video to learn more about the advantages of a VitaClay.

The Holiday Cookie Ingredient that Prevents Weight Gain
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and to enjoy holiday parties, give gifts, and share celebratory meals with loved ones. The flip side is that it is also a time of seemingly endless rich foods and overeating. From egg nog to turkey dinners, holiday cookies and pastries, let’s face it: most of us eat too much and load up on the calories this time of year.
Fortunately, one of the season’s cookie ingredients offers some protection against the bad eating habits of the holidays: ginger.
New research published in the medical journal Nutrition Research and Practice found that ginger's naturally-occurring polyphenols and antioxidant compounds protect the body against some of the damaging effects of a high fat diet so prevalent this time of year. Ginger reduced the amount of harmful triglycerides, cholesterol, and low density lipoproteins resulting from eating a high fat diet.
The researchers also found that the spice significantly reduced the amount of weight gained from eating a high fat diet. That’s great news for just about everyone this time of year because there are so few healthy items on most holiday menus.
But, reduced weight gain and fewer heart disease markers aren’t the only reasons to enjoy more ginger in your diet. Ginger is a well-known nausea remedy, which is also a good thing this time of year since overeating can result in indigestion and nausea.
Ginger is also an effective natural antiviral agent, according to herbalist and author Stephen Buhner, helping to reduce the incidence of colds or flu we’re more vulnerable to this time of year. Stress, colder temperatures (yes, viruses thrive in colder temperatures!), depleted immune systems, excess sugar consumption, and exposure to more people make us more vulnerable to catching whatever is going around.
Other research published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine found that ginger significantly lowers blood sugar levels, suggesting that it may work on other levels to induce weight loss as well. Stabilized blood sugar levels are imperative to weight loss as they signal to the brain that we are full so it can initiate the elimination of excess fat from our bodies. Additionally, balanced blood sugar levels also prevent cravings for unhealthy sugary or fatty foods.
The scientists in the Nutrition Research and Practice study found the best results for preventing weight gain were achieved using steamed gingerroot, rather than alcohol-based tinctures or ginger tea. But, it is highly likely that you’ll experience the same health benefits using freshly-grated gingerroot as well. Powdered ginger is not as likely to yield the same impressive health effects.
It’s easy to get fresh gingerroot into your diet. Yes, you can grate some fresh ginger into your next batch of gingerbread cookies or spice cake. You can also add chopped, fresh ginger to soups, stews, stir-fries, vegetable or meat dishes, and desserts. It is equally delicious in both savory and sweet dishes, making it extremely versatile. You can also add a 1- or 2-inch piece of ginger to your juicer when making fresh juices. Fresh ginger adds a bit of heat and spice to fresh carrot, apple, or vegetable juices.
You can also make a delicious beverage by adding chopped fresh ginger (a 2- to 3-inch piece) to 1 quart (or 1 Liter) of water. Bring to a boil then cover and reduce to a simmer for at least 45 minutes. Strain out ginger pieces, add a bit of stevia to taste (optional) and drink.

7 Little-Known Health Benefits of Avocadoes
Who doesn’t love guacamole or avocado toast? Not only are avocadoes delicious with just about everything, they offer a wide variety of health benefits. While most people are already aware that avocadoes help boost skin health thanks to their healthy fat content, here are some of my favorite lesser-known health benefits of avocadoes:
Leukemia Treatment: An exciting study published in the medical journal Cancer Research found that a compound found in avocadoes, known as avocation-b, induces the death of leukemia cells. While the research is still in its early stages, since there are so many health benefits of avocadoes it is worth adding more to your diet if you’re suffering with this condition.
Autism Spectrum Benefits: If you or someone you know is on the autism spectrum, you may want to start eating more avocadoes. That’s because avocadoes contain a powerful healing nutrient known as glutathione. Research published in Medical Science Monitor found that glutathione effectively treated the effects of autism-related conditions. The study focused on glutathione supplements but it is still worth enjoying more of these versatile fruits.
Osteoarthritis Pain Alleviator: According to research in the journal Arthroscopy, avocadoes were found to have positive effects on pain levels in those suffering from osteoarthritis of the knees or hips.
Other Anti-Cancer Benefits: Research in the Journal of Experimental Therapeutics and Oncology found that avocadoes have several anti-cancer benefits. Not only do they encourage cancer cells to commit suicide, they also directly inhibit cancer cells and their growth.
Anti-Microbial Effects: As antibiotics become increasingly less effective against superbugs, it’s good to know that research published in BioMed Research International found that avocadoes exhibited antimicrobial activity against some bacteria and fungi. Just one more reason to enjoy more avocadoes.
Heart Health Benefits: Thanks to the presence of vitamin K in avocadoes, these delightful foods also boost heart health.
Boosts Carotenoid Absorption: When avocadoes are eaten alongside foods with carotenoids like beta carotene primarily found in orange and green vegetables, they increase the amount of these nutrients . That means extra eye and skin health benefits for adding avocado to your leafy green salad or with those carrots or squash you’re eating. And, yes, avocadoes contain some carotenoids but there are other vegetables that offer more of these critical nutrients.
How to Add More Avocadoes to Your Diet
Most people already know how delicious avocados are in guacamole. But, don’t let your avocado repertoire stop there. You can also add avocado to you smoothies, salads, dips, sandwiches, wraps, and even top soups with slices of avocado. You can blend avocado with cocoa and a sweetener for a delicious and healthy chocolate mousse. They can also be added to other desserts as a cake ingredient (replacing some of the oil or butter in a recipe) or a frosting (simply blend avocado and some icing sugar and cocoa or other flavor to use as a frosting for cakes, cookies, or cupcakes.

Cow's, Almond, Coconut, Hemp, Oat, or Soy Milk--Which One is Healthiest?
More and more people are turning their backs on cow’s milk, and for good reason: it isn’t a sustainable product for the environment, it takes a whopping 1950 gallons of water to create one gallon of milk, it has been linked to many health problems including prostate cancer, and the poor treatment of animals on some ranches, to name a few. Presented with an ever-growing range of plant-based milk alternatives to cow’s milk, including: almond, coconut, hemp, oat, rice, or soy milk, which one is nutritionally superior? I hit the nutrition data to find out. Here’s what I found, but first let’s take a look at cow’s milk for comparison’s sake:
Cow’s Milk
One cup of cow’s milk contains approximately:
150 calories
12 grams of carbohydrates--In the case of cow’s milk, these carbs are lactose, or milk sugar, which is hard to digest for anyone lacking sufficient milk-digesting enzymes, or lactase).
8 grams fat
8 grams protein--Whey protein powders are derived from a type of protein found in cow’s milk. Cow’s milk also contains the protein casein, which is a common allergen for many babies, children, and some adults. Research shows that children who are allergic to milk also have a higher predisposition to asthma. Additionally, in studies like one published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, researchers found that casein is linked to prostate cancer.
While it is a source of calcium, it is not easily digestible for many people, which means it may not be absorbed. After all, you can only absorb what you have first digested.
Many people have ethical concerns regarding some dairy farming practices.
Check out my blog, “I Gave Up Dairy for a Month. Here’s What Happened.”
Almond Milk
One cup of almond milk contains approximately (there are, of course, variations between brands):
30 to 60 calories
1 gram of carbohydrates (sweetened varieties have higher amounts)
3 grams fat
1 gram protein
Almond milk is vegan so naturally, it is lactose-free for those who are lactose intolerant. People with full-blown allergies to cow’s milk can also drink almond milk, It is a source of calcium, magnesium, vitamins A and E, and many other nutrients. Of course, you should avoid drinking almond milk if you have a nut allergy. Additionally, avoid brands that include the food additive carrageenan as it is highly inflammatory and can cause pain, inflammation, or digestive problems in some people.
Check out my blog, “11 Reasons to Eat More Almonds.”
Coconut Milk
Not the same as the coconut cream and coconut water found in cans, coconut milk is usually more diluted than the canned coconut cream often referred to as coconut milk. One cup of coconut milk, or coconut beverage as it is also called, contains approximately:
50 calories
2 grams carbohydrates (sweetened varieties have more)
5 grams fat
0 grams protein
Coconut milk doesn’t typically have a lot of nutrients naturally-present but some may be added to beverages during their manufacture. It contains medium-chain triglycerides which have been linked to weight loss. Few people have allergies to coconut milk, making it a good option for those with allergies. Some manufacturers add carrageenan and these products are best avoided.
Hemp Milk
As the name suggests, hemp milk is made from hemp and is therefore vegan and lactose-free. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t make people “high.” One cup of hemp milk contains:
110 calories
6 grams carbohydrates (sweetened varieties have more)
7 grams fat (only 1 gram of saturated fat)
5 grams protein
It is a good source of iron and often contains added calcium. It is naturally high in protein, making it a good choice for those who want muscle-building and blood-sugar-balancing protein in their milk substitute. Few people have allergies to hemp milk.
Oat Milk
Naturally vegan and lactose-free, one cup of oat milk contains:
120 calories
16 grams carbohydrates
5 grams fat
3 grams protein
It is frequently fortified with vitamins A, B2, B12, D, calcium, potassium. Oats naturally contain beta glucans which has been found to boost heart health. While oats don’t contain gluten, they are frequently contaminated with wheat, so if you’re allergic or sensitive to gluten, you’ll want to ensure the oat milk you select is certified gluten-free.
Soy Milk
One cup of soy milk contains approximately (again, there may be variations between brands):
80 to 100 calories
4 grams of carbohydrates (sweetened options have higher amounts)
4 grams fat
7 grams protein
It is naturally lactose-free and a good source of vitamins A and B12, calcium, potassium, and isoflavones. Soy is also a source of the nutrient coenzyme Q10. Low levels of this critical nutrient have been linked with lung conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It contains around the same amount of protein as cow’s milk.
Soy is frequently genetically-modified so it is best to choose soy milk that is certified GMO-free if you’re drinking it. It is a common allergen and is best avoided by those with common allergies.
Which One is Healthiest?
Which beverage is healthiest? It differs from person to person. I’ve personally observed many health improvements when I ditched dairy many years ago and observed the same reduction of sinus and ear infections, joint pain, digestive issues, and other problems in my clients. After that, you may need to consider your personal health needs: do you have many allergies or sensitivities? Then, almond or soy milk may be best avoided. Are you worried about GMOs? Then, you’ll want to skip the soy. Are you dealing with blood sugar-related health issues? You’ll want to avoid the sweetened varieties of any milk alternative, and may find oat milk too high in carbs for you. If you’re celiac or gluten-intolerant then you’ll probably want to stay clear of oat milk unless it is certified gluten-free. Hemp is probably the one I’d pick as the best tolerated by the most people, but you’ll want to try it to see for yourself. Ultimately, you may want to pick the one that tastes best.

10 Reasons to Start Using Copaiba Essential Oil
The vast jungles of the Amazon rainforest house some of the greatest diversity on the planet including: the 3000 species of fish, 1300 species of birds, 430 species of amphibians, 380 species of reptiles, and the astonishing 40,000 species of plants. Because of the incredibly abundant life it is no wonder that some of the best plant-based remedies originate in this mysterious part of the world. Among the canopy of the forest, the copaiba (pronounced co-pie-EE-ba) tree, is one of the most exciting plants to rear its towering head, growing to around 100 feet tall.
Used for generations by the indigenous tribes, it has only recently caught the attention of western medical scientists; however, it is quickly becoming one of the greatest medicinal discoveries of the plant world. Here are some of the reasons to start using copaiba essential oil:
Urinary Tract Infections: Traditional spiritual and physical healers of the region have used the resin from the copaiba tree for disorders of the urinary tract (including bladder and kidney infections).
Anti-Inflammatory for Skin Conditions: The indigenous people also used copaiba as a topical anti-inflammatory agent for a wide variety of skin disorders, including: psoriasis and eczema.
Sore Throats and Tonsillitis: Copaiba is also traditionally used as a gargle for sore throats and tonsillitis. Having tried using the oil during an episode of strep throat I can attest that it took the pain and swelling of my sore throat right down.
Pain of All Kinds: Perhaps copaiba is best known for its ability to alleviate pain and inflammation. An animal study published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry found that copaiba demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory activity throughout the body and also reduced the number of free radicals that tend to be involved in the degradation of joints in arthritic conditions. It can be applied directly to the skin in painful areas; however, you should dilute it in a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin. Products suitable for ingestion can also be used internally for pain. Be sure the product you select indicates suitability for internal use since most are not.
Parkinson’s Disease: Because of copaiba’s interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, it holds promise in the treatment of brain diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. It appears to work against Parkinson’s disease through its ability to protect the nervous system from damage. A preliminary study published in the medical journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy found that copaiba’s effects on the CB-2 receptors might help protect brain and nervous system cells involved with dopamine production and regulation.
Alzheimer’s Disease: In a study exploring the effects of copaiba on brain cells and Alzheimer’s disease, researcher found that copaiba provided marked antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, nerve- and brain-cell protecting abilities. The researchers also found that copaiba prevented the destruction of a brain hormone known as acetylcholine, a deficiency of which has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
Potential Against Cancer: While the research into the effects of copaiba on cancer is in its early stages, it is showing great promise against a wide variety of cancers, including: skin, lung, lymph, breast, and colon cancers, as well as melanoma. It may be beneficial for other types of cancer but more studies are needed. In a study published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, researchers found that copaiba stops skin cancer cells from proliferating.
The Appearance of Aging Skin: Other research found that copaiba stimulated collagen in the skin and promoted new skin formation, which may be beneficial for chronic wounds, burns, or the appearance of aging skin. .
Anti-Bacterial Benefits: Copaiba is also used for its anti-infectious properties, which are starting to be proven by scientific research. According to a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, copaiba demonstrates notable antibacterial properties. The study assessed the effectiveness of various copaiba species and found that they all had significant antibacterial activity, particularly against bacteria found in the mouth and which contribute to dental and gum conditions. The scientists concluded that “there is great potential against oral bacteria.”
Arthritis and Joint Pain in Animals: According to Animal Wellness Magazine, copaiba can be helpful in the treatment of arthritis and joint pain in animals. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Melissa Shelton recommends one drop twice daily (added to food) per 50 pounds of animal. In other words, a 50-pound dog could have one drop two times daily, added to its food. Of course, be sure to choose a product suitable for internal use. A drop or two of the oil can also be applied topically, diluted in a small amount of carrier oil for application.
How to Use Copaiba Essential Oil
There are many ways to use copaiba essential oil, including diffusing it or mixing it with water and spraying into the air for the purpose of inhalation; applying topically to skin, painful areas, or skin cancer; or ingesting it for pain or as part of a treatment for conditions like cancer or brain disease. It can also be mixed with honey to soothe sore throats and coughs. However, most of the oils on the market are not suitable for ingestion. So, use only oils that clearly indicate their suitability for internal use or which indicate “dose” on the bottle. I have tried different brands and have obtained the best results with doTERRA’s copaiba essential oil. Additionally, you should work with a qualified natural health expert before using any essential oils internally or if you’re dealing with a serious health issue like cancer.
Make sure you select high quality, pure, undiluted essential oils. While you may end up diluting the oils yourself, most of the oils on the market are diluted with less-than-desirable carrier oils. High quality oils cost more than the cheap varieties on the market but are worth the increased price. Many cheap oils are adulterated with solvents used during the extraction process or toxic pesticides used in the growing process of the herbs from which the oils are extracted.
After diluting one to two drops in a small amount of carrier oil, always conduct a 48-hour test patch on a small inconspicuous part of your skin to determine whether you have any sensitivity to the essential oils. Discontinue use if you experience any skin sensitivity. Use essential oils with caution and the advice of a qualified natural health practitioner during pregnancy or in the treatment of any health condition.
Selecting the Right Oil
Some companies may cut down the copaiba trees to extract the oil, thereby potentially destroying the delicate rainforest. Choose a product in which the company taps the trees similarly to the way that maple trees are tapped, and which are not over-tapped to ensure the life of the trees. This is one of the reasons I prefer doTERRA's copaiba essential oil. Theirs is sustainably harvested by tapping the trees, ensuring the health and longevity of the trees and providing the indigenous people of the rainforest with fair trade earnings and a means to stave off unethical corporations attempting to cut down the rainforest.

13 Reasons to Start Drinking Cherry Juice Today
Tart cherry juice tastes delicious enough to drink it purely for enjoyment’s sake, but there are so many health benefits that you’ll want to drink it more often. Here are some of the reasons to start drinking cherry juice.
Antioxidant Powerhouse: According to the University of Michigan, one cup of freeze-dried tart cherries has an ORAC value greater than 10,000, making it extremely high on the list of antioxidant-rich foods. The researchers found that tart cherries have a wide diversity and a unique combination of phytochemicals that boost their antioxidant function.
Arthritis Alleviator: In an analysis of studies on cherries, researchers found that 5 out of 5 studies of the fruit on arthritis demonstrated benefits to arthritis study participants.
Blood Pressure Reduction: A new study published in the medical journal Nutrients found that drinking around one half of a quart of tart cherry juice daily reduced high blood pressure in the study participants.
Cholesterol Reducer: The same study found a reduction in cholesterol levels among those drinking the juice.
Exercise Recovery: Research published in the European Journal of Sport Science found that tart cherry accelerated the healing of exercise-induced muscle damage.
Gout Healer: Tart cherry juice and tart cherries are well-known for their ability to alleviate the pain and inflammation of gout—a form of arthritis that primarily affects the big toe.
In a series of 3 studies published by the University of Michigan, researchers found that tart cherries reduced cardiovascular disease risk and heart-damaging inflammation.
Inflammation Suppression: The study in Nutrients also found that drinking tart cherry juice resulted in a 25% reduction in C-reactive protein (CRP)—a marker for inflammation and frequently a precursor to heart disease, as well as a reduction in inflammation.
Nutrition Booster: Cherries are nutritional powerhouses that contain a wide variety of phytochemicals, which literally means plant chemicals, including: anthocyanins, flavonoids (such as quercetin), chlorogenic acid,
Osteoporosis Aid: Another study published in the journal Nutrients found that tart cherry juice significantly prevented bone loss and may therefore be helpful in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. What’s more: a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that tart cherry actually increased bone mineral density.
Prebiotic Gut Benefits: According to research published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, tart cherries and tart cherry juice act as prebiotics in the gut, meaning they provide food for beneficial bacteria to ensure their growth and ability to multiply.
Sleep Inducer: In a study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics, researchers found that drinking 8 ounces of tart cherry juice in the morning and again 1 to 2 hours before promoted sleep among those suffering from insomnia. The juice was so effective that the insomniacs slept an average of one hour and 24 minutes more, on average, each night while incorporating the beverage into their daily regimes.
Weight Loss Booster: Because tart cherry juice reduces inflammation, it may come as no surprise that it reduces inflammation linked to obesity, suggesting the fruit and the beverage made from it may be a helpful addition in weight loss programs.
While most of the studies were conducted on tart cherries, sweet cherries also offer many health benefits. It’s easy to get more cherries into your diet. There are fresh, frozen, freeze-dried powders, juice, and dried cherries to choose from.
Add fresh, frozen, or dried powders into your smoothies. Drink the juice, preferably diluted with equal parts of water, and snack on the dried cherries or add them to leafy green or quinoa salads.

Top 5 Nutrients that Boost Metabolism
Most of us have spent at least some time lately thinking about losing those few extra pounds we put on over the holidays. We know we need to eat healthy and exercise, but what if we could add some nutrients to our daily regime to give our metabolism a boost. Fortunately, we can.
Before I share the best nutrients to boost our metabolism, let’s take a look at what exactly “metabolism” means. Most people throw the word around without really knowing much about it. Metabolism is the process by which the body breaks down food and nutrients for energy and for various bodily functions. Once we understand this concept it’s easy to realize that boosting our nutrition by adding various nutrients to our daily regime can help improve metabolism.
Metabolism-Boosting Nutrients
While a deficiency in any nutrient can play a role in impairing metabolism, digestion, or energy functions in the body, the reality is that some are more important than others. The main nutrients needed to improve metabolism include:
B-Complex Vitamins—The B-Complex vitamins are arguably the most important nutrients for a healthy metabolism. That’s because they literally boost the energy centers of our cells, known as mitochondria, which fuel every cellular function in the body. Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, helps the body metabolize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is necessary for the proper metabolism of proteins. Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, is needed for the metabolism of protein and fats. But, Vitamin B12 cannot function properly without B9, or folate, which is needed to ensure B12 works properly. Because the B-Complex vitamins work best together and supplementing with one or more can result in deficiencies of the others, it is best to take a B-Complex supplement rather than just individual B vitamins. They usually come in 50 milligram or 100 milligram products. Follow package instructions for the product you select. Some of the best food sources of B-vitamins include: apples, bananas, brown rice, grapes, nuts, seeds, spinach, squash, and watermelon,
Calcium—Research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that calcium, in conjunction with vitamin D, increases weight loss in those seeking to lose weight. The recommended daily dose of calcium varies between 800 to 1500 mg for adult men to post-menopausal women, with premenopausal women in the middle of that spectrum. The best food sources of calcium, include: almonds, almond butter, broccoli, carrot juice, carrots, dark leafy greens, kale, kelp, navy beans, oats, sesame seeds, sesame butter (tahini), soymilk and tofu (organic only since soy is heavily contaminated by genetically-modified organisms—GMOs), wild salmon and sardines.
Iron—Needed for healthy cellular functioning and for transporting oxygen throughout the body, including to muscles to help build healthy muscles, iron is necessary for a strong and healthy metabolism. The Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) of Iron range from 8 to 18 milligrams for adults, with women typically needing more then men, and menstruating women needing more than non-menstruating women. While many health professionals advise people to obtain heme iron from meat sources such as red meat, liver, poultry, and fish, as they claim it is better absorbed, non-heme (plant-based) iron sources contain vitamin C, which improves absorption. Additionally, red meat, organ meat, and poultry sources of iron typically contain excessive hormones, saturated fats, antibiotics, and other substances that may negate their value. Non-heme sources of iron include: prunes, raisins, figs, apricots, bananas, walnuts, kelp, beans, lentils, dark leafy greens, asparagus, and peaches. Incidentally, most of these foods also contain vitamin C, which helps with the absorption of iron in the body.
Magnesium—This mineral is necessary for the manufacture of energy and muscle formation in the body yet experts estimate that up to 80% of the population in North America are deficient in this essential nutrient. A typical dose of magnesium is 800 mg. daily and is usually taken with calcium supplements. Magnesium is found in almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, figs, lemons, apples, dark leafy greens, celery, alfalfa sprouts, brown rice, and many other foods.
Vitamin D—A low level of vitamin D has been linked with an increased amount of fat. It’s not clear whether increased fat causes low vitamin D levels or vice versa, but I believe that low vitamin D levels may lead to increased fat. That’s because some studies, like one published in the medical journal Clinical Calcium, found that vitamin D helps to control blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance in diabetics, meaning it makes the body respond better to its own hormone, insulin. Moderate sunlight exposure, which is difficult to get this time of year, along with fish, liver, and egg yolks are the primary food sources of vitamin D. Supplementation with D3, known as cholecalciferol, the type of vitamin D that has been used in most studies showcasing the vitamin’s benefits, is recommended. However, it is usually sourced from fish so you may wish to choose synthetic vitamin D2, ergocalciferol, if you are vegan. Most health professionals recommend 800 to 2000 IU daily; however, stick to the lower dose if you choose synthetic vitamin D2.

New E-BOOK: FOOD FIX: The Most Powerful Healing Foods and How to Use Them to Overcome Disease
Whenever someone tells me that they looked up their health problem on the internet, I cringe. That’s because I know from experience that the internet is full of more junk and ridiculous claims than actual fact. Instead, I prefer to showcase the research to dispel the myths from facts. The reality is that most plant-based foods are even more powerful than the claims made about them.
You wouldn’t trust your plumber to build the bridge in your community so don’t trust people with absolutely no background in nutrition to advise you on healthy eating. Sadly, that includes most medical doctors, the bulk of whom have absolutely no training in nutrition. Those who do usually have taken only a single course with a curriculum that dates back twenty or more years.
As a long-time holistic and clinical nutritionist who specializes in nutritional medicine (that’s the use of food as medicine, rather than just on weight loss or the food pyramid), I believe, as I’m sure you will too after reading Food Fix, that food truly is the best medicine. It is as powerful or more powerful than most pharmaceutical drugs. Having said that, you should never discontinue your medication without your doctor’s approval.
But, if you are looking to get amazing healing results, look no further than your dinner plate. Every food or beverage you put into your body either heals or harms your body. Each food you eat is broken down into the foundational units that your body can use to build healthy cells, tissues, bones, glands, organs, and organ systems. If you’re unhealthy, it is likely that you haven’t been feeding your body what it needs to build healthy cells. Without healthy cells, your body begins to break down. You feel exhausted, your joints or muscles ache, your organs malfunction, and you are barely able to get through each day.
That’s why I wrote Food Fix: The Most Powerful Healing Foods and How to Use Them to Overcome Disease—to help you discover the facts from the myth, and learn how to use food to transform your health. You’ll know that you’re getting research-based information from a nutritional medicine veteran and renowned natural health expert with over 25 years experience.
Food Fix is divided into two parts: “The Foods” and “The Fix.” In “The Foods” you’ll get an introduction to over 30 of the best superfoods that are readily available healers and the research to support their use. I encourage you to discover these common foods in a new light, exploring the impressive curative properties of these often-overlooked, humble superfoods.
In “The Fix” you’ll discover even more about the many healing properties of these foods. This section is divided into three parts: “The Conditions,” “The Bodily Systems,” and “The Dietary Fixes.” Under conditions, you’ll find many common conditions and which foods to eat for each one. Under “Bodily Systems” you’ll learn how to support various aspects of your body (like your eyes, as one example). Under “The Dietary Fixes” you’ll learn about some dietary fundamentals, like plant-based sources of protein, for example.
Keep reading to discover how you can transform your health with the many miracle healing foods presented in Food Fix: The Most Powerful Healing Foods and How to Use Them to Overcome Disease.
You’ll discover:
The fruit that reduces high blood pressure within ONE HOUR of eating it.

10 Health Benefits of Ditching Perfume Now
Before you take a chance on Chanel’s Chance or seek Amazing Grace (the perfume), you might want to rethink your decision to spritz yourself or your clothes. That’s because most perfumes are made from toxic, synthetic ingredients that can destroy your health. While humans have worn natural essential oils of herbs, flowers, and other natural substances for thousands of years, in recent decades, manufacturers of perfumes have switched to cheaper and increasingly toxic ingredients that have a whole host of health problems linked to them.
So, in addition to cutting out cigarettes, reducing your sugar intake, and eating healthier, there’s another resolution you should make that will likely have profound effects on your health: ditching perfumes and colognes this year. And, don’t forget the perfumes that are added to laundry detergent, fabric softeners, room “deodorizers,” and scented candles as they contain many of the same nasty, potentially health-damaging ingredients.
What can you expect if you ditch perfume this year? You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel. It may not happen overnight as it can take time to undo any pre-existing damage you’ve experienced from using perfumes and colognes. Additionally, it can take some time for these toxic substances to be eliminated from your body and for your body to repair any damage. So, be patient. Most people notice improvements within a month of eliminating perfumes and colones.
I can personally attest that I experienced most of the following health benefits and noticed that my sense of smell significantly improved. My husband jokingly says I have the sense of smell of a bloodhound, with an ability to smell things that seem to go unnoticed by most people. I also noticed my moods significantly improved. Years ago, I observed that after walking through the perfume counter at a department store, I would frequently come home exhausted and start to feel depressed. Once I avoided those stores and stopped using perfumes altogether, I experienced improved energy and much fewer feelings of depression.
Most of my clients were shocked at how much better they felt after eliminating perfumes, colognes, and other scented products from their daily life. And, most of them reported that when they stopped using their favorite perfume for a while and then smelled it again, they could not believe that they once loved it. Instead it smelled disgusting to them.
Health Benefits of Ditching Perfume
Here are some of the many health benefits of purging perfume, based on information from the chemical industry’s own safety data sheets and the Environmental Working Group’s findings regarding the most common chemicals found in the most popular perfumes:
Better Breathing: Benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and linalool, commonly found in most perfumes have all been linked to respiratory irritation and disturbances.
Fewer Headaches: Chemicals like benzyl alcohol and methylene chloride are known to cause headaches.
Improved Moods: Methylene chloride is documented to cause irritability.
Improved Muscle Coordination: Benzyl alcohol and ethanol are known to cause muscle twitching and lack of coordination.
Improved Sense of Smell: Most of my clients report an improved sense of smell after eliminating perfumes. While I haven’t seen the research on it, I believe that one or more chemicals in perfumes actually impair the sense of smell.
Less Pain: Many chemicals in perfumes are linked to pain. Benzyl aldehyde is linked to abdominal pain while benzyl alcohol and methylene chloride are linked to headache pain.
Less Risk of Kidney or Liver Damage: Ethyl acetate has been linked to both kidney and liver damage.
Reduced Incidence of Depression or Anxiety: Ethanol and linalool are known to disrupt the central nervous system, which may be linked to feelings of depression or anxiety.
Reduced Risk of Brain Disease: Acetone and benzyl alcohol are linked to disturbances in the central nervous system. Some perfume chemicals have been linked to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.
Reduced Risk of Cancer: Many perfumes contain many cancer-causing ingredients, including: benzyl acetate, limonene, and methylene chloride. Benzyl acetate has been linked to one of the most deadly forms of cancer—pancreatic cancer.
