Steve read his first science fiction book when he was nine years old. He discovered Frances T. Montgomery’s “The Wonderful Electric Elephant” in his maternal grandparents’ library. This book was the start of his lifelong love of both science fiction and science. While he was an undergraduate college student, Steve started his work career as a machinery and power tool repairman in an equipment rental store. In his last semester in college, he took a class on what would now be called behavioral neurobiology, and the professor invited him to work in his research laboratory. In this job, Steve invented, built, and operated equipment used to train and test an assortment of research animals, including humans. He left this job to go back to school Steve read his first science fiction book when he was nine years old. He discovered Frances T. He left this job to go back to school to obtain a PhD in neuroscience at the University of California, Davis.

During Steve’s career as a researcher, he studied the development of the nervous system. His teaching was much more varied. He taught anatomy, physiology, cell and molecular biology, some biochemistry, and a little immunology in addition to neuroscience. Steve’s favorite course was training PhD students on how to teach and present their own science to others. During this period, Steve taught himself Adobe Illustrator and produced over 1,500 teaching illustrations for himself and his colleagues. He did not charge others for this work. He received many teaching awards from his students and the Outstanding Teacher Award from his faculty colleagues.

When Steve and his wife retired, they moved back home to Northern California near their children and built an off-grid solar and wood powered home. Steve did more than half the site preparation and construction. The house is on top of a ridge line with a nice view of a foothill about four miles away on which there are no artificial lights at night.

Steve is now occupying himself with community activities and training himself to be a writer of fiction, and his first effort, Accidental Abduction From Earth, has been published.
