It’s in the cards

“I am with you always.” the inscription on the locket from her grandmother filled her with a warm glow and brought a tear to her eye. She tied her scarf round her head and checked in the mirror. Madame Alithea smiled back.

The booth was busy with serious people alone or with a friend and groups daring each other to have a reading.

The coffee shop was empty when April arrived at the end of the day. Her smile grew wider with every blank space on the wall.

Rob, the café owner’s smile matched April’s.

“When are you bringing more paintings?”

“Tomorrow?” April stuttered.

“Yeah, that’s great, people love your art, maybe you can knock the Madame Alithea stuff on the head soon”

“I think that’s a long way off, if I get there at all”

Rob shook his head.

“I love being Madame Alithea Rob, using my grandmother’s cards I feel close to her.”

“I believe in you April Stevens, your grandmother did too, you are an artist, that’s your calling”

April looked up from her artwork aware of a customer approaching, her stomach knotted, her customers didn’t usually look like this. “Hi I’m Sonya Taylor” the business suited customer held out her card. “Sonya Taylor, Taylor’s Art Gallery.” The knot in April’s stomach tightened.

“Madame Alithea, how can I help?”

“I know who you are, you’re April Stevens, I bought one of your pieces from the cafe, the owner gave me your name and told me where to find you. I wondered if you would be interested in having an event at my gallery”

“Thank you so much, I would love to. Which piece did you buy?”

“It’s a house, it belonged to a woman I knew, a tarot reader like you”

Her grandmother’s house. April wrapped her hand round her locket “I am with you always” she knew her grandmother was still looking out for her.

Recipe for Life

Recently someone asked on Facebook what was the ideal recipe for life. This was my response.Keep going, see the best in people, look after yourself, be kind when you can, do no harm, avoid stress as much as possible, roll with curve balls, be aware of what matters and what doesn't, communicate, forgive, say thank you, apologise, laugh, love, hang out with people who bring out the best in you, avoid those who bring out the worst in you if possible, pay attention, keep learning, keep growing, be yourself do your best. Life is complicated yet very simple.

Lead us not into ….

Temptation sits in front of me, staring into my eyes, daring me.

Do it!

Its deliciousness would melt in my mouth.

Regrets bitter after taste may not come.

The eaten cannot be uneaten.

Freedom, my life without your judgement,

on temptation’s plate.

Stolen morsels suggest a palatable experience.

Moderation has been my watchword

until now.

Daylight Chasers

Some books leave you with a lot of words to write. Some books leave you unsure how to do them justice. Read this in one sitting. I wanted more but to be honest it doesn't need it. I don't want to spoil this. I read it without reading the blurb because of the enthusiastic response of people who read it. Sometimes it's better to not know and just go with the flow. It's 46 pages, it's less than an hour. Something tells me it will stick around in my head for much longer than that. Take a chance, you won't regret it.

Blood Kisses

This may say I'm finished but I suspect Jane Langan's words will draw me back. I have already read several of these poems twice or more. This is emotional stuff. It stays with you. It speaks of a life not easily lived. It also speaks of a survivor. Light hearted stuff here too. Some of the content is not easy to read given the subject matter but it is all relatable and well worth reading. I hope there will be more to come. Jane LanganBlood Kisses

Click and Connect

Karen Honor has a way with words, be it poetically, or in blog format. She also makes you think. There's a lot to think about here. Like the community scarf Karen tells stories, weaving the trials of lockdown with musings on life. This is well worth reading and is indeed a collection of hope.

Christmas Yet to Come

This is a thought provoking and realistic story. The characters are well drawn and relatable. The echoes of Dickens are plain to see in a recognisable contemporary setting. This is well written and could be read in one sitting.

Ups and Downs

DB Carter has a way of drawing you in and making you care about the characters. He doesn't shy away from difficult subjects, they are part of the story rather than the whole just like they would be in real life. Another excellent book from a multi genre author.

The Wild Army (The Guardians of the Forest Book 1)

The characters are relatable and well drawn in their well imagined world. The twists and turns of the story keep you reading, wondering who to trust, what might happen next and what it all means for the Danae. This book trilogy comes under children's books but as a grown up I am thoroughly enjoying getting caught up in Cheryl Burman's fantasy story. I suspect may adults will love these books too. I have to read all of them.
