Book of the Week: Devolution.

Buy the Kindle version of Devolution, though: I’m reading it now, and I’m liking it now, but twenty-seven bucks for a paperback is God-damned absurd*. So is fifteen bucks for a Kindle book, but I’ll let it slide this one time because Max Brooks wrote it and I want to see what he does with Bigfoot. Also, the social commentary is already pretty good.

*Admittedly, that version is large-print. And I had a perfectly good rant up and written on the subject, too.

The ‘Journal d’Indochine’ Kickstarter

This Vietnam Call of Cthulhu supplement was done by the same people who did The Sassoon Files a while back. If you don’t remember, that was the Kickstarter where the entire print run got confiscated and destroyed by the People’s Republic of China because the description of the Chinese Communists in that Call of Cthulhu supplement wasn’t sufficiently worshipful. As one of the writers of the Journal d’Indochine Kickstarter has assured me, they have learned from that particular display of barbaric insecurity*.

*He was too polite to put in those terms. I do not particularly feel like being polite about it.

I spoke up. “On the bright side, you did do the right thing to call us in.” I talk better when I’m moving, so I stood. If they had been rude enough to have us meet in a room with an outside window I might have made a show of peering out of it. So I moved to the head of the table instead. How was it the head of the table? Because I was standing there, obviously.

“I gotta say,” I went on, “that it’s nice that things aren’t messed up from here to gone, for once. No, really! Pam and I, we’ve had cases where they had feral lairs ready to swarm. Remember Grand Forks?” The grimness around the table confirmed for me that they, indeed, remembered Grand Forks. “Yeah. Three thousand dead, and if the local Reclamation bureau had called us in a week earlier all those people might still be alive. So you got that going for you. We’re not out of time.

“But the clock is ticking.”

The Inkulinati video game Kickstarter.

I don’t actually know if I’m going to get Inkulinati – a turn-based strategy with medieval animals. Video game development takes forever and I altready have a Steam library full of games I don’t play. But the conceit is nigh-perfect:

Five days left on this one: I’ve set the timer and when it goes off I’ll ask my wife. Or at least show her the videos. The videos are funny.

‘Linus and Lucy.’

It was suggested to me earlier and now it’s an earworm.

FROZEN DREAMS: eligible for the 2020 Dragon Awards!

With a month to spare, mind you. Anyway, FROZEN DREAMS certainly qualifies in terms of subject matter, and since I fully expect Dragon Con to be canceled anyway signing up for the Dragon Awards is is how I avoid being forsworn. If you’ve read the book, and if you think it deserves a Dragon Award, click the link and vote for me*.

Do I think FROZEN DREAMS deserves a Dragon Award? Well, sure! I think that the book is awesome – while at the same time being sick of looking at it, but I’m gathering that’s normal for books one’s written – and I’d love to win. I’m not going to, but by God I’ll put my book up against anything else written during the contest period. It deserves no less from me.

*If you’ve read it and don’t think it deserves an award, that’s all right. But by all means; give it a review on Amazon or Goodreads.

RIP, Monica Stephens.

Sad news: Monica Stephens of Steve Jackson Games passed yesterday from complications involving chemotherapy. My condolences and deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones, particularly Steve Jackson himself. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for them right now.

Tweet of the Day, The ‘Endearing’ Headless Codpiece Robot edition.

‘Endearing’ just isn’t the word I’d use, sorry. Oops: ‘super endearing.’ …Sorry, no, still not seeing it.

Happy Juneteenth!

Happy Juneteenth! As you can see here, this site was observing this holiday long before it was cool. And why not? Celebrating the effective end of slavery in the USA sounds like an excellent reason to have a party. Besides: we need more civic holidays anyway.
