More snow tonight…
…and another two hour delay for school tomorrow. My kids are kind of holding out hope for a full snow day, but who knows? The weather people are starting to sound like we should be able to miss the worst bits, and my county doesn’t particularly want to shut down the schools anyway. And yes, I’m grateful for that.
Besides, the important thing is, my kids got their homework done anyway. That way there’s no surprises, and they can zone out a little when the teachers lecture the rest of the class about being prepared.
I mention all of this because that’s a large part of what I’ve been dealing with, tonight. Oh, and THE STARS ARE WRONG got rejected! Impressively fast, too. So I sent it right back out again. It’s good for me, really.

Tweet of the Day, …Damn edition.
All demos are fake, it’s apparently the Royal Marines, not ours, and there are obvious problems with the prototype that need to be addressed. Still… damn.

01/16/21 Snippet, GHOSTS ON AN ALIEN WIND.
Right now I’m just adding bits in my head that I know I’ll need later. Actually making it all coherent will take more time. At least, that’s the plan.

I wasn’t looking forward to trying to get a straight answer from Oft about the Scout site at Erebus. I didn’t get one, either. And it was for a really annoying reason: he legitimately didn’t have one.
“I’m sorry, Pam,” he told me as we drank our beers. Including the Anticipant, who was surprisingly easier to handle once everybody had a couple of drinks in them. “If I knew what brought the Scouts there at the start, I would have told you. I was hoping the Anticipant would glean something from the site, but she could not.”
“How would you know?” I muttered.
Oft raised an eyebrow. “She may find it difficult to give details in a manner that you or even I can understand — no offense — but she knows what the phrase ‘This is important’ means, and she’s capable of saying it. If she doesn’t know, she can say that, too. And she has perfectly good ears.”

‘Fever.’
Ooh, interesting: Apple TV orders series on Booth manhunt.
This looks interesting:
Apple has ordered the limited series “Manhunt,” which tells the story of the hunt for U.S President Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth.
The series hails from Monica Beletsky and is based on the book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer” by James Swanson.
I’ve actually read Manhunt: from what I remember, it’s a pretty good book. Certainly the kind to lend itself to a dramatic retelling of the story, which is pretty much what you want out of a miniseries. And it’s not like actual events weren’t dramatic, from start to finish, either. I might actually make time to watch this.

01/5/22 Snippet, GHOSTS ON AN ALIEN WIND.
You ever wonder what a group of player-characters looks like from the outside?

A bunch of us gathered together for some unpleasant duty: catching up on the news. There was a terrorism report in the latest info-squirt, and you don’t watch those alone. Personally, I’d rather I didn’t watch them at all, but it’s worse for your mental health if you don’t know what’s going on out there.
Some philosopher from before First Contact called it the Eight-Foot-Bug Trick. The idea is that if you open the door, and see (say) an eight foot tall bug, you’ll freak — but you’ll also relax a little, because at least it wasn’t nine feet tall. Or didn’t have poison mandibles, or whatever. In other words, there’s nothing scarier than not knowing what the horrible thing you’re facing. And on the Tomb Worlds, there’s nothing more worrying that people who can’t get a handle on their fear.
So it was in our best interests to sit down and watch the footage of the Bureau Désavoué attack on the wildcatter compounds on 457-R-02. Hurrah.
Most of it was clinical: nine-tenths of the footage sent by the Bureau was just them preparing the kinetic energy projectiles used in the assault. It was almost pretty, the way the giant rocks entered 457-R-02’s atmosphere and impacted in a perfect pentagon. You could really let yourself forget that those blooms of light represented at least six thousand deaths.
01/04/22 Snippet, GARY AND THE WENDIGO.
Bigfoots!

One of the nice things about Bigfoots is, they don’t need much in the way of supplies. They do their own hunting and don’t need clothes, so they’re pretty good is living off the land. What they do need is mostly stuff like salt or corn meal or toothpaste.
Oh, and books. Gary liked books. He didn’t care what they were, either, just as long as they were in English. “It gets quiet up here sometimes,” he told me as we unloaded three crates full of romance novels and self-help books. “Reading helps with that.”
“I hear ya, Gary. You got a favorite genre, though?”
“Anything human’s fine.” He gave a loose-limbed Bigfoot wide shrug. “It’s all the same amount of weird to me, so I don’t care. You want coffee?
Tweet of the Day, Watch As Geektyrant Gets Cold-Eyed About The New Fraggle Rock Song edition.
I’m not gonna lie: it’s always fun to see Conquest’s First Law in action. And that new Fraggle Rock song, indeed, sucks.

Whether or not it is the actual new theme song, however, is an open question.
Today has been an insane MESS.
We had two snow days this week and a delayed opening – and, to be fair: the two days were justified, and possibly so was the delay. The snow came out of nowhere Sunday night, and dropped half a foot on precisely the parts of my county that never get hit by the ‘half a foot’ part. Usually we don’t get storms come up from the south, but we sure did this time!
But it’s been shambolic chaos throughout. My favorite was when my youngest kid had a ghost box appear on his monitor screen. That’s what it was: a transparent box that couldn’t be turned off or closed. Eventually I had to cast Turn It Off and On Again, See if That Helps, and that worked; but we have no idea what it was, or why it showed up, and I never like that when dealing with computers.
On the bright side, I finished prepping THE STARS ARE WRONG to go out. Now I just need to find a place to not-sell it to.
