‘The Saga Begins.’
11/20/2022 NaNoWriMo, BANSHEE BEACH: 555/37523.
What can I say? It was a complicated weekend. I’m just pleased I could get myself to write words today.
I gotta say it for Red Beach’s finest: they’ve got nice, clean cells. Didn’t smell, either. Or at least, not enough to complain about. When you’re in a drunk tank, it’s pretty damn impressive when there isn’t a smell older than a day. That’s devotion to civic hygiene, that is.
Then again, that might have been because of the clientele. My three temporary colleagues all had the indefinable air of people with lots of money, and who would still be in the morning, when they sobered up. They’d forgive having to need their clothes laundered, but not burned. That probably justified scrubbing down the cells every day.
Me? I was far too sober, dammit. I hate getting stashed in drunk tanks without even getting to do any drinking first. I always feel like I’m stealing somebody else’s seat.
1899 is pretty good and kept me watching it.
But 1899 is strange. No spoilers, and seriously try to avoid them until at least the last episode. There’s a lot of creepiness going on throughout, and it’s a lot more ‘atmospheric horror’ than it is ‘blood and gore.’ All in all, it got my interest early on and kept it. 1899 may not be your cup of tea, though.

PS: I can’t really talk about the genre of horror that it is without spoiling the whole thing for you. Sorry. This is one time I was glad to resist temptation and not find out in advance what was going on.
Patreon Microfiction: Weakness.
Ah, Weakness. Yeah, well, good is not always nice. It sometimes is, but that’s not a requirement.
My mini-review of BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER.
Short version: I suspect that Earth-2’s version of BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (the one starring a cancer-free Chadwick Boseman) isn’t nearly as good as this one. Instead, we get the movie where the director and writers of a popcorn superhero picture suddenly have to address themes like grief, anger, and loss. Lucky us.
Slightly longer version: I liked BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER, but there’s a lot of sadness in it, and the sadness makes the characters choose poorly at times. I’m not claiming that it’s an extremely deep movie, except by popcorn movie standards. The action is fun and the characters more so (they wisely gave Winston Duke more to do in this one, and he was up to the challenge), but cheerful, this movie is not. I also have some piddling objections to why the Wakandans didn’t simply start dropping depth charges (which is the endgame for any sapient water-land battle), but then it was obvious that the writers didn’t think in TTRPG terms. I can live with the results.

Book of the Week: …You Tell Me.
I’m on my last bar of power, sorry. I might not make it to television. So: open thread on books. Come up with stuff you KNOW the rest of us have never heard of.
So, things were going well until the engine temperature light started flashing.
Turns out that’s bad. Particularly when you’re on the highway.
But AAA came through in the end*, and I am home. I am not writing anything, I have had a drink, and now I am going to watch 1899 until the world stops vibrating. Well, and put up Book of the Week and the weekly Patreon microfiction. Working title for the latter: “The Monkey’s Ass.”
*The amazing part? I’m only about forty minutes late.

No writing tonight.
1899 has kind of sucked me in. If you do watch it, make sure you set the audio to English (original) and add subtitles. The show is extremely polyglot, and you miss a lot of subtleties if you set it to English (dubbed).
Anyway, I can make it up tomorrow at the con. There’s usually some dead time.
Tweet of the Day, …Okay, Maybe They Were Right To Move The Bills-Browns Game edition.
They’re playing the Bills-Browns game in Detroit because of snowy conditions. There were some complaints about this, until the snowy conditions showed up:
Orchard Park, home of the @BuffaloBills, has seen 66 inches of snow in the last 24 hours!
This is the highest 24-hour snow total ever recorded in New York state.

66 inches of snowfall is almost but not quite taller than my head*. That probably qualifies as ‘too much snow for football.’ Even in upstate New York.
*I’m a hobbit, remember?
