The “I guess this is my non-genre movie for 2023” OPPENHEIMER trailer.

Jesus, how much weight did Cillian Murphy lose for OPPENHEIMER, anyway?

Tweet of the Day, A Football, Erm, Play For The Ages edition.

It looks like what would happen if I was playing Madden NFL for the first time and screwed up the button order.

Via @JoePCunningham, who is now officially Done For The Night.

“Jones… let me get her jacket. Bernice, right?” Greg noted that for this the Chief used a regular old mechanical gear-file, reading the clicking buttons like they were regular English. “Let’s see… says here she’s got a background in applied interpersonal theory and directed involuntary admissions, as well as plain old kinetic expression. Sounds like just what you’d need.”

“I can talk to people too, Chief,” Greg replied mildly. “Although I wouldn’t mind a specialist along. What kind of kinetics? Fist, stick, or blade?”

“Stick, with a note attached. She likes hitting bad people. A lot. Keep that in mind, Greg.”

“So, I can have her along, then?”

“You said it, yourself: Jones checks out and she can disappear for a while. I’d give you an entire exorcist platoon if I thought I could get one prepped in time.” Ibrahim looked at him, all humor gone from his face. “I feel like we walked into this play at the start of Act II, Greg. We need to get caught up on the plot, and right away.”

“Understood, Chief.” Greg stood up, and formally put his right fist on his heart. “No gods but ours, sir.”

Ibrahim returned the salute. “No gods but ours.”

Patreon Microfiction: Grievance.

100WS-GrievanceDownload

The more they thought about ‘Grievance,’ the angrier they got. Humans: you can kill ’em and they’ll get mad, but they get ten times as pissed off if you just turn them into temporary puppets for a little while. Go figure, am I right?

“So what was their angle?” Greg said, stubbing out his smoke; he had gotten what he needed from it. “How did they get through the line?”

“Not what. Who.” Ibrahim slid a smart folder over to him. Greg raised an eyebrow at the actual use of digitech, and flicked it on. A holographic image of a balding, middle-aged man appeared. “That there is Regional Processing Coordinator Oswald Feeney. He’s a twenty-year man, clean jacket, no disciplinary record and no signs of corruption. Boring family life, no money troubles, and his biggest vice was a weakness for ice cream. His subordinates said he was nice, but dull. Just the sort of fellow you would want looking over everybody’s shoulder to make sure that magically infected corpses don’t have gold-witch eggs in them.”

“No kidding,” Greg replied. “It’s also just the kind of cover you want for a deep-cover agent. Who looks at the boring ones? He’s our guy, then?”

“Either that, or our fall guy. It’s his signature on the clearance forms for all the corpses that turned out to be gold-witches, and nobody’s seen our good Mr. Feeney since yesterday. Either way, they got to him.”

Book of the Week: Conan: Blood of the Serpent.

S.M. Stirling wrote a Conan novel! Blood of the Serpent, and it’s a page-turner. Stirling takes the world seriously without slavishly worshipping it, which is sometimes a problem for people trying to work in the style of the pulp classics. I heartily recommend it.

So, Tom Lehrer made his ALBUMS public domain, and downloadable.

Streaming or RAR download, your choice. I was not aware that Tom Lehrer had gone that far, or that everything was now as public domain as he could make it. So I’m letting you know that now.

Via Facebook.

PS: You can get a good download link to THE REMAINS OF TOM LEHRER, Volume 1, by going to the streaming link, then downloading the RAR there. That link works.

The ‘I am forced to admit that I laughed’ BARBIE teaser trailer.

This BARBIE trailer is… remarkably self-aware. And cinematically literate! I mean, intellectually you understand that Greta Gerwig has of course seen 2001 multiple times; but then you promptly forget that fact, because she’s directing the freaking Barbie movie. Maybe this is even going to be slightly subversive! …Which normally I’d hate, but I have difficulty taking TV shoes and movies seriously when they’re based on existing toy franchises (even the ones I like). Even a little subversion is beating expectations.
