The look she gave him could have curdled milk

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

The sixth and last prompt for the week. A poem? A short story? Link the prompts into a longer piece? Your choice. The look she gave him could have curdled milk

Joe got on splendidly with women. Little girls, young women, mums, grannies all responded to his cheerful teasing, his smiling compliments. The way he held a door for them, bowed them through, gently took their arm when crossing a street, and let it go once they were safely across – whe...

It’s said that opposites attract

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

Day five’s prompt. Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, poetry or prose; or pen a short story over several of them. It’s said that opposites attracta frozen hand meeting a fiery hand

She was fire. He had always known it. Dangerous, harmful, lethal. He mocked as others burned, scorned their seared hearts as they limped away. His own heart was defended by a fortress of ice, the layers strengthened with self assurances of invulnerability.

A heart is one thing. B...

Cats Table Polite: use these 3 words

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

Prompt four for this week. Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, poetry or prose; or pen a short story over several of them. Cats Table Polite: use these 3 words

Faye never did like cats. It wasn’t their self-sufficiency which turned her off. That was a positive. It was the way they made her feel sub-par. Those narrowed eyes, the lifted tail and pointed noise all said, with a delicate sigh: I know what you really are. Liar.

It was d...

They gathered at the graveside

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

Prompt three for this week. Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, poetry or prose; or pen a short story over several of them. They gathered at the graveside

The day was aptly bleak as they gathered at the graveside. Rolling grey clouds, drifting snowflakes, a chill wind. Suzy wore her heavy jacket, warm leggings, boots, gloves, and a hat pulled low over her head.

A little girl wrapped in a a scarf and wearing a woollen hat

Standing beside her mother, she peered into the gaping hole in th...

Oppressive Surprise Skirt

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

The second prompt for this week, using three words. Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, or pen a short story over several of them. Oppressive Surprise Skirt: use these three words

The oppressive heat didn’t make for good party weather.

‘Everyone’ll get stuck into the beer and be drunk as skunks in no time,’ Moira complained.

‘There’s something wrong with that?’ Pete grinned through the sweat streaming down his heat-red face.

Moira h...

A stony path …

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

The first prompt for this week and it’s a picture prompt. A beautiful place! Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, or pen a short story over several of them. A stony path …

These ancient stones are well-trodden. By whom, we are not certain, although we hope. We have climbed them for three days and nights, and have forgotten to exclaim over the pinkness of the heather, the greenness of the grasses, to gently poke our walking sticks...

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

The last prompt for this week. Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, or pen a short story over several of them.

I have a bit of a theme going here, alth0ugh taking a different view this time.

It was the last day of the month and

It was the last day of the month and the last day when he could arrive.

Louise sat on her bed, eyeing the bulging white cloth cover hanging from her wardrobe door. She hadn’t lifted the cover since the la...

The Palm Tree Swingers Island Band – Lily Lawson

Lily Lawson writes relatable poetry for adults and fun, fun, fun poetry for kids.

Already a fan of Santa’s Early Christmas, I was thrilled to see this new bit of nonsense about a bunch of animals, birds and insects touring the world as a VERY LOUD band.

The illustrations are gorgeous and can be explored along with the words for even more fun.

A great addition to the kids’ library!

Beast Radio Moaned

Today’s writing prompt and my response.

Prompt four for this week. Use the prompts however you like, one at a time, or pen a short story over several of them.
Beast Radio Moaned: use these three words

As a family they always listened to the radio in the evenings. Father would sit in the arm chair reserved exclusively for his use, and fuss at lighting his pipe while Mother and Sissy washed the dishes and Freddie sat on the floor hunched over his book of trains. Freddie loved trains. Fat...

Wild garlic & cheddar scones

Wild garlic & cheddar scones are a seasonal family favourite.

I love to make these in the spring when the local wild garlic is in season. Try to obey the resting times which I’m sure make a difference to the lightness of the finished product. By the way, I use 30 gms of wild garlic and have found that I need 80ml of milk. I make mine with yoghurt because I always have that around.

Enjoy!
