Cozy Vales is Open!

After months of behind the scenes work, I and a group of talented authors launched a new shared world: Cozy Vales!

One World. Many Stories.

While every story is set in the cozy fantasy world of the Cozy Vales queendom, each author brings their own unique voice, tone, and vision.

Some are small, slice of life tales. Others are a bit more adventurous. But they’re all cozy!

So, what’s the world of Cozy Vales like? Here’s a testimonial from someone who has explored nearly every square inch of the queend...

How do you trust someone who can't be trusted?

Book five in my Little Yokai series launches December 26th!

In Justified, Bureau of Souls Agent Keiko Miller finds herself counting on a Yokai criminal with a questionable past and surprising ties to her boyfriend. Frenemies? That's an understatement...

"My latest case involves a mind controlling vampiric Yokai prowling Los Angeles for victims. And it doesn’t take me long to learn they’ve got a super shady history with my current boyfriend.

But before I...

Exploring Serial Storytelling on Amazon Vella

I’m over halfway through my first serial storytelling adventure, and I’m loving it! The book is called Runed, and I’m publishing it exclusively on Amazon’s Vella platform.

The story is straight-up urban fantasy. High on action, low on romance. Magic. Monsters. Mysteries.

How does Vella work?

The first three episodes of every story are free. After that, you can unlock episodes with tokens (Amazon gives everyone at least 200 free tokens to kick off their Vella experience).

I publish new episodes every...

I Hired a Sensitivity Reader So You Didn't Have To

[note: I’m using “sensitivity reader” and “reader” to describe someone who reviews “unpublished manuscripts with the express purpose of spotting cultural inaccuracies, representation issues, bias, stereotypes, or problematic language.” (Reedsy Blog)]

Mea culpa for the click-baity title. A more accurate title would be “Here’s Why You May Want To Hire A Sensitivity Reader (subtitle: And Here’s What Happened When I Did).

One of the urban fantasy series I’m working on involves a female protagonist who...

A Fence, A Tree, And Broken Deadlines

I have struggled — and failed — to put my feelings about 2020 into words. There are fewer depressing moments as a writer than the ones when you’re speechless. So instead of reflecting on the past year in a final farewell to 2020 (“and don’t let the door hit you on the way out”), I’m sharing an update on my writing. I’ll leave it to other, far more eloquent, writers to opine about all this year has brought (dumped on?) us . . .

My goal for 2020 was to publish at least the first two books in an urb...

12 Days, 53K Words, One Novel

This little typing monkey has been extremely busy, well, typing. Earlier this month, I finished the first draft of the second novel in my urban fantasy series. I scheduled (12) days to write 60K words. I finished the draft in (12) days but came in at 53,939 words. I’m still calling this a major victory.

The Plottr app was critically helpful in making this happen. It’s my new favorite plotting tool.

Your Story Secrets - Overcoming Writer’s Block

If you’re suffering from writer’s block, feeling creatively “stuck,” or feel you haven’t found the core of your story, I can help.

Based on my own experience as a writer and my experience as a teacher of storytelling, I’ve developed several reliable methods for overcoming these kinds of challenges.
