Scheckisms

When I was in the military, my unit had a lampoon we all contributed to with drawings and humor. We wrote in these government hard-bound books with blank lined paper. I was frequently insulted for some of my unpopular views (hyper-liberal to socialist) and my comments were labeled "Scheckisms" after my last name. I've never stopped writing Scheckisms.

My Latest Flash Fiction Crime Story

I have a new story up on Shotgun Honey.

Once again, I chose to go the path of non-violence as almost every story on this site ends with someone pulling the trigger, the end written with a homicide. I just thought this was too easy.

John Scheck Quotes Go Online

https://quotefancy.com/john-scheck-qu... I have no idea how this came about, done without my knowledge. Stupid quips I wrote years ago, mostly as Facebook posts, mostly anti-inspirational inspirational musings to combat all of those horrible photos of a kitten hanging from a tree branch saying something about how shitty Mondays are.

Top Five John Scheck Quotes Rejected by Quotefancy.com:

1) A short series of personality questions can determine your American Indian name. Mine is “Swears Too Much.”

2) Put in a position to choose one or the other, I’d definitely pick unusual over cruel punishment. Forcing me to watch a Sister Act movie marathon would be cruel and unusual.

3) We’d overthrow a third world dictator for repugnant qualities we admire in high school athletic coaches.
4) Your freedom to play the accordion ends when I’m in range to hit you with a pillowcase filled with pool balls.

5) “Women and children first!" Quick thinking for me at age eleven. I’ve been trying frantically to come up with a pithy new saying that’ll keep me in the lifeboat.

6. When setting out on a long journey, never take a dump on a bus…especially if they don’t have a restroom!

Here’s what most of the quotes are like on that page:

8. “Persistence is very important. You should not give up unless you are forced to give up.”

— Elon Musk

Yawn, right? Here’s mine:

7. Never give up, ever…unless you get all sweaty and uncomfortable.

More Flash Fiction

https://mysterytribune.com/deep-in-th...

I’ve come to love this 700 word story format, not so much for the content, but as a writing exercise. You have to look at every single word and make a decision whether it lives or dies. Why use two verbs when you can use a contraction? Do you need that adjective? Can you eliminate the subject without confusing the reader?

I’m taking this same surgical technique to edit my first novel which will be independently publish in the beginning of next month. I've pared down the book from 108,000 words to fewer than 100,000 and I still have several chapters that are going under the knife. My later novels are tighter and won't need so much editing.

More on that novel later.

Sorry?

No one could ever accuse me of being a vegan, but when a recipe calls for chicken and eggs, it just seems a bit much. I mean, you’re eating the chicken itself and you're going after its offspring, too? What’s next? A recipe that calls for a chicken’s hopes and dreams?
