End of an Era: the Papermakers of Camas
December 17, 2017
Paper of the Week: A 134-year old Paper Mill in Washington State
Check this out! Camas Washington’s High School mascot is called the Mean Machine, an animated paper roll machine that’s a nod to the town’s paper making history. The road that runs by the High School is Papermaker’s Way. In November, the company Georgia-Pacific announced it would be closing most of the mill’s paper and pulp production early next year. This is an interesting article about how this town has grown and changed with the times, bringing in other means of economy in the face of this industry dying out.

In the Studio:
Believe it or not, I designed this logo over 25 years ago and am finally trying it out as a watermark!
——————————————————————————————————————–
Have you seen The Last Jedi? I’m not a big Star Wars fan, but I have some family members who are going to see it. I do have to admit that this snowflake is pretty clever! Oh and BTW, did anyone else see a giant Imperial Walker in their local Walmart? It was there one day and gone the next!
I’ve written about the organization Paper for Water before… and this is such a wonderful story for the season on so many levels! Two sisters from Dallas, Isabelle and Katherine Adams, started their company when they were just 8 and 5 years old when they learned that girls in third world countries often did not go to school because they were hauling water all day, and that a child died every 15 seconds from unclean water. So they started a project making origami Christmas ornaments and exchanging them for donations to raise money for water wells. Their project grew into the non-profit organization Paper for Water, through which the girls have raised more than $1.3M and have helped fund over 150 water projects in fourteen countries. And this year, they’ve partnered with Neiman Marcus to sell even more ornaments and fund more wells. Talk about girl power!
This looks like a great exhibition if you’re in the Barnstable, MA area. The show at the Cahoon Museum of American Art runs through December 23rd: “Contemporary Silhouettes: The Art of Cut Paper.” I got curious about the illustrator of the image below. Lucy Gibbons Morse created all of the papercut illustrations for her book Breezes. It was a delight to page through it here.

A silhouette by Lucy Gibbons Morse from “Breezes” published in 1921
Has anyone been to see this at the Hirshhorn? Ann Hamilton’s installation At Hand, combines the sounds of mechanization and audio recordings of a poem with the motorized release of translucent white paper, which gently descends from the ceiling. It is part of a larger exhibition of 60 works that explore how artists use absence as a means of expression. What Absence is Made Of will be on view until summer 2019.
Did you catch this story on NPR a few weeks ago? The radio crew made their way to Kentucky to visit Larkspur Press, where for more than 40 years Gray Zeitz has been creating books one at a time in his two-story print shop near the town of Monterey.

Reminiscence Papers
December 16, 2017
On the even days during December, I’m highlighting the companies that are sponsors of the Twelve Months of Paper Calendar. These companies work hard to bring us beautiful papers, paper products, paper journalism, paper- and book making tools, paper history and more. Today, we learn about Reminiscence Papers.
Reminiscence Papers is an online store selling papers and supplies for artists and craftspersons working in various media. Reminiscence offers papers in several sizes, as well as letterpress type, collage paper, vintage buttons, bookbinding paper, toy parts (new and vintage), origami paper, twill tapes and so much more. Many, but not all, of the papers in the Reminiscence Papers line are designed by Debra Glanz, and while all of these were designed primarily for book arts, they have found a much wider range of applications.
Debra uses some of her papers and ephemera to create whimsical artwork as well! Give yourself plenty of time to browse the more than 500 items listed in her Etsy Shop.
——————————————————————————————————————–
About Our Sponsor: Debra Glanz is a paper artist/bookbinder/paper designer/mixed media fool who has had many, many, many occasions to seek and acquire any number of bits and pieces that she just knew she would be able to use in her work………..someday. And usually she does. However, things have started piling up and the elves that are supposed to come into her studio every night to organize and tidy up have gone on strike and refuse to cross the threshold until she “lightens the load”. That and something about paid vacations and a fully funded dental plan. (Who knew the elf union was so powerful). To that end, she has agreed to part with an unreasonably large percentage of her treasures – lucky you!

A Simple Book Structure
December 15, 2017
When does inspiration strike?
Last year around this time, I was looking at a pile of catalogs/junk mail on my dining room table. And I envisioned this book sculpture. I created a half-tree template, laid the catalog on my cutting mat, grabbed my Xacto knife and cut out this tree shape. Voilá, a book tree!
The pages were already “bound” with the staples that held the catalog pages together. My mind started spinning, and I found these interesting two-sided glossy papers in my paper stash. I started creating this series of buildings. I love how they collapse!
Eventually, my prototypes led to the August project in the 2018 Twelve Months of Paper Calendar.
Do you have a catalog laying on your dining room or office table? Or a unique paper waiting to be turned into something new? Here’s a tip: a flat bottom on your design will make your book sculpture stand nicely. Otherwise, you can hang it (like an ornament)! Ready… set… go, and send me a picture if you create something!
——————————————————————————————————————–
We’re making these Collapsible Buildings using brightly colored lokta papers in the Twelve Months of Paper Online Class today. It’s not too late to join the class, which runs through December 23rd (a newbie just signed up yesterday). You’ll have access to the video tutorials throughout 2018, so you can make at your own pace! Find out more about the class and the Twelve Months of Paper Calendar.

Learning Online
December 14, 2017
On the even days during December, I’m highlighting the companies that are sponsors of the Twelve Months of Paper Calendar. These companies work hard to bring us beautiful papers, paper products, paper journalism, paper- and book making tools, paper history and more.
Today, Helen Hiebert Studio is sponsoring the post, and I’d like to introduce my upcoming online class, Paper Weavings. Registration will open in January, and the 6-week class begins February 7th.

Have you taken an online class, and if so, what did you like about it? What didn’t you like? Feel free to leave a comment below. Most of my online class participants report that it’s a first for them, and I’m so happy they trusted me enough to try it! Now don’t get me wrong – I LOVE teaching in person and will continue to do so – but I find online teaching to be rewarding for a variety of reasons.

Here are some advantages of online learning:
Work in your own space at your own pace.
No need to travel (save time and money).
Unlimited access to videos & instructions after class ends.
Study with an instructor you haven’t been able to connect with.
Accountability to the instructor and other participants.
What have I forgotten?

And of course, there are some disadvantages:
No face to face contact with the instructor.
No real classroom experience of getting to know others in person.
Accountability to the instructor and other participants (notice this can be an advantage or disadvantage).
What have I forgotten?

Last week, I had a meeting with a business accountability buddy, and we helped each other plan out our next six months. Among many other things, I decided that I’m going to offer a new online class every winter, followed by a repeat class in the spring or summer (those of you who are waiting for Paper Illuminated to be offered again, stay tuned)! I’ll be offering some self study options as well.

If you have followed the blog for awhile, you might remember the 100 x 100 Paper Weavings Project I did in 2013 (one weaving every day for 100 days). I can’t wait to introduce you to the Paper Weavings Online Class. This will incorporate a gorgeous selection of Japanese papers (if you choose to purchase the kit I’m assembling); several weaving techniques including shaped weavings and cut-outs; and projects ideas such as cards, books, lanterns and more.
I hope to see you in a class in the near future!

Country Western Papermaking
December 13, 2017
I share this at least once a year, because even if you’ve seen it, I think it is fun to revisit.
Papermaking on Sesame Street was one of the highlights of my career. I worked with a film editor, who came up with the lyrics for this catchy song and hired a singer to perform it.
Robbin Ami Silverberg and a group of kiddos spent an entire day in the studio with me at Dieu Donné Papermill in NYC about 20 years ago.
Enjoy!

Papermaking Supplies
December 12, 2017
On the even days during December, I’m highlighting the companies that are sponsors of the Twelve Months of Paper Calendar. These companies work hard to bring us beautiful papers, paper products, paper journalism, paper- and book making tools, paper history and more. Today, we learn about Arnold Grummer’s.
Arnold Grummer’s® has been a supplier for hand papermaking supplies since 1976 when Arnold and Mabel filled their first order for classroom kits for teachers. By 1992 the family felt there was enough opportunity to support full time work and the moved the company to Milwaukee, WI. Since Arnold and family members shared a common foundation as educators, the primary focus of the business has been products for K-12 education and for those making paper at home. A few studio supplies include essential fibers – cotton linter, cotton rag and abaca – along with a popular line of handcrafted book & paper presses.
Arnold Grummer’s offers a new, economy version of their popular Book & Paper Press. All presses currently on sale. Arnold Grummer’s® offers 10% off your entire order thru 12.31.17 when you add promo code HH2017 to your shopping cart at www.arnoldgrummer.com. Discount does not apply to the Annual Press Sale, which is going on now.

Mabel made a plaster casting mold from a bronze cast Warrior sculpted by Montana artist Bern Sundell (used with permission). The paper cast is cotton linter with a small amount of abaca for added strength, and calcium carbonate to prevent yellowing over time.
A cast paper piece by Mabel Grummer is on display at an Artist & Craftsman dealer near you, along with Arnold Grummer’s basic papermaking supplies.
——————————————————————————————————————–
About Our Sponsor: Arnold Grummer’s ® has been an ambassador to education with the art and science of hand papermaking for over 40 years. They offer hands-on, easy-to-use kits and supplies for home, studio and classroom along with commonly used fibers. Product designs are inspired by Arnold Grummer’s work as a faculty liaison to paper scientists at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, WI, now known as the Institute of Paper Science and Technology at Georgia Tech. Arnold was passionate about the individual fiber. He encouraged young and old to discover how the smallest variations between ‘water, fiber and a screen’ could lead to limitless artistic expression. Arnold’s inspiring presentations are available to everyone in video clips on arnoldgrummer.com.

Paper of the Week: The Sunday Paper & Paper Talk
On the even days during December, I’m highlighting the companies that are sponsors of the Twelve Months of Paper Calendar. These companies work hard to bring us beautiful papers, paper products, paper journalism, paper- and book making tools, paper history and more. Today, The Sunday Paper (aka this blog you are reading now and Paper Talk (my podcast series) are the sponsors!
I need your help! In 2018, I am planning to feature an artist or organization that is working with handmade paper every week on the blog. Please send me your ideas, and better yet send me a link to a website (yours or someone else’s) so that I can get my list started! At the point, I’m curating Paper Talk, but I’ll let you know when I need suggestions!

I’m going to plug this Best Paper Gifts Guide once more here. It features a selection of cool paper products that are available this holiday season (ranging in price from $5 to $150). Purchase papery gifts while supporting artists, designers and brick and mortar shops. Please share this list with your friends and bring on the PAPER LOVE!

This is a crazy music video that involves a LOT of digital printers and sheets of paper. Check it out!
Remember these old things with rabbit ears? Thibaut van Boxtel, aka Vébé, is a multi-talented designer who makes fantastic illustrations with paper.
Here’s a real (as in wow, this is how hard life can be and the obstacles that can get you) story about the struggles of Faith Bartley, a woman trying to re-enter society after prison (while helping others trying to do the same). And yes, it has to do with paper!
Whoa, this is pretty cool, although this “tissue paper” is more tissue than paper. This new kind of bioactive tissue paper is made of materials derived from organs that are thin and flexible enough to fold into an origami pig. The technology could potentially be used to support natural hormone production in young cancer patients and aid wound healing.
Check out this Indiegogo campaign for Flurry Cotton, a paper made specifically for letterpress printing by Boxcar Paper.

An Age Old Craft
December 9, 2017
Today I’d like to pay tribute to making paper by hand. It’s an age-old technique that has changed little since it was first invented around 105AD. Aside from being a substrate for all kinds documents to works of art, contemporary artists are using paper in all kinds of innovative ways. Here are a few examples, but there are endless possibilities and variations within each technique!
Pulp Painting

Embossing

Sculpture & Watermarking

Watermarked Lamp, by Helen Hiebert
This is just the tip of the iceberg, folks! If you are interested in hand papermaking, you should look into the following organizations:
The Friends of Dard Hunter, a national papermaking organization.
IAPMA, an international papermaking organization.
Hand Papermaking Magazine, a non-profit that publishes a journal.
Paper Slurry, a blog dedicated to hand papermaking.
What organizations have I missed? Please leave a comment below!
And just in case you didn’t know, I’ve written two how-to books on the subject:The Papermaker’s Companion and Papermaking With Garden Plants & Common Weeds.
I’ve also created two DVDs which are available as downloads: Water Paper Time and The Papermaker’s Studio Guide DVD.
