Road Ghosts – Four ’til Late
I’d like to introduce you to my first novel, Four ’til Late. It was written in 2007, in honor of my uncle Chuck, who died the month before I started it. He was a writer who kept all his writing to himself, and sadly nothing remains of his work. So, I decided to write a novel, which led to more novels.
Road Ghosts, the series Four ’til Late kicks off, caught the attention of Seventh Star Press, and they are publishing it, along with Blue Spirit and its sequels. Once again, Four ’til Late is in front of me, bringing back a flood of memories in its wake as I edit it.
It’s a story of a haunted roadtrip. Brett Nelson and his friends Gonzo, Lizzie and Jimbo race to figure out why they are being chased by spirits all the way to New Orleans. Along the way, they face threatening demons from their past together.
Yes, this sketch is cheesy, but another cheesy whiteboard sketch very much like it led to the gorgeous cover to Reality Check that Nell Williams did for me. I can’t wait to see what the SSP artist and I cook up for it.
And I can’t wait for you to read it.

I am the Iron Writer! Boo-yah!
An Iron Writer Winner is me!
Two weeks ago, I was given the ingredients:
A failed superhero,
A Chechem Chaka Tree.
A piano
A boat propeller
I had 4 days to write a flash story of exactly 500 words. I was up against 3 other writers. The challenge is so terrifying that one of us dropped out.
Not me. I took the challenge and wove those ingredients into my story, Killer Cure!
A week ago, the stories posted. My challengers did well, crafting quite different stories that I enjoyed reading.
But I won, with almost 3/4 of all the votes. THANK YOU to everyone who voted for my story!
Voting Results
I highly encourage other writers to pick up the gauntlet and give The Iron Writer Challenge a try. Flash fiction writing is excellent practice at making every single word count and teaches great lessons about storytelling. The short deadline, the competition and the wacky elements all add up to an excellent combination.

My Iron Writer story is posted!

As you may recall, I entered the Iron Writer Challenge… 500 words (exactly), four prompts, in three days.
The result was my story, “Killer Cure”, which is going up against two other writers’ stories here:

Please go read the stories and vote for the best one. Mine, of course.

Interview: Eric Garrison Gives R.J. a Reality Check
Reblogged from R.J. Sullivan Fiction:
Congratulations to my friend Eric Garrison on his two book publishing deals, one with Hydra Publications for his recently released science fiction dimension hopping thriller, Reality Check. The other for a multi-book deal with Seventh Star Press.
Shorty after Eric and I met, we discovered pretty fast that our writing shares much in common. We decided to embrace the similarities and write in a "shared world."
What a great interview. Thanks, RJ!

I’m taking the Iron Writer Challenge!
Four writers. Four elements. Three days. Five hundred words.
This is the Iron Writer Challenge! I’m going to write a flash fiction story using the elements thrown down, Iron Chef style, in three days. I’m up against three other writers taking the same challenge. I signed up weeks ago, and today’s the kickoff, the clock is ticking.
I opened the site to see what the elements are. Go ahead, look at the following link and see for yourself. Go on, I’ll wait.

So, I can handle most of those. But really? “A Chechem Chaka Tree“? That’s just cruel, it’ll take a good chunk of those paltry 500 words just to tell the reader what that is!
Well, wish me luck. I already have a glimmer of an idea…

No, not THAT Hydra…
Just to be clear, my publisher is Hydra Publications (also Hydra Games), not Random House’s Hydra imprint.

What a rush!
Minnie Celebrates (Nell Williams)
Between Thursday and Friday, I gave away over 550 copies of Blue Spirit and held onto the top 10 in free urban fantasy on Amazon all day Friday. It pleased me very much to see how much interest there was in my book.
But now, in the cold hard light of … well, okay Saturday morning is still pretty good, even without the Blue Spirit freebie promotion. Minnie is still dancing. I’m sure Skye will be delighted too, since she loves the attention. After she sleeps it off, that is.
Meanwhile, I have another giveaway going on, I’m giving away a paperback copy of Reality Check, and you can enter to win all month.
