Chris Hayes Dunks on Elon Musk for Being ‘the Root Cause of All the Damage’ to Tesla

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes had a good chuckle on Wednesday night while talking about Elon Musk and the increasingly bad news for his electric car company, Tesla.

Hayes, eventually joined by fellow MSNBC personality Stephanie Ruhle, dunked on Musk and Tesla a lot, inspired of course by the company’s brutal earnings call on Tuesday.

“The good news is apparently the company is not on ‘the ragged edge of death,'” Hayes said, quoting Musk directly. “So says CEO Elon Musk, quite a message for investors on a day when the earnings figures were bad news.”

Noting how business news coverage of the problem repeatedly notes that Musk’s actions as one of Trump’s key advisers is a huge part of that, Hayes ran down how the company’s profits dropped 71% during the first quarter of 2025.

“As one analyst put it, ‘this is the worst performance I’ve seen in Tesla’s history,'” Hayes continued. “Now somewhat oddly, I gotta say Tesla stock was up more than 5% today, because, as I understand it, the glimmer of hope for people that are hardcore Tesla stock enthusiasts, and there are many, came from Musk himself, who said on the earnings call that he was going to start spending more time with Tesla and less time chainsawing the federal government.”

“The problem, of course, is that Musk himself is the root cause of all the damage that Tesla has suffered to its brand,” Hayes said with a smirk. He then noted a new CNBC poll showing that while “Republicans still overwhelmingly approve” of Elon Musk and Tesla, “everyone else, not so much. Democrats, Musk is down 82%. Now that’s a bit problematic for Tesla, given that, according to that same poll, those Democrats who overwhelmingly dislike Tesla are the most enthusiastic and most likely to buy an Electric Vehicle. Flip side of that, as a Republican pollster said, is that where Tesla is strongest is among the people least likely to buy an electric vehicle.”

And then, as he welcomed Ruhle, Hayes noted, “I have never quite seen any company do to its brand what Tesla has done to its brand, what Musk has done to the brand of Tesla over the past year.”

You can watch the entire clip, including a fun bit where they mocked Musk’s constant, shifting predictions of “self-driving cars” that never come true, below:

Pedro Pascal Slams J.K. Rowling’s Celebration of Anti-Trans Bill: ‘Heinous LOSER Behavior’

Pedro Pascal took a strong stance against “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s support for anti-LGBTQ legislation in the UK on Wednesday. The star of “The Last of Us” responded to a Reel shared on Instagram by Tariq Ra’ouf that stated “that awful disgusting s–t, that has consequences.” Pascal commented that Rowling’s position is “heinous LOSER behavior.”

On April 17 Rowling, who has expressed strong anti-trans beliefs in recent years, made it clear she supported the U.K. Supreme Court ruling on trans women that the words “women” and “sex” in the U.K.’s Equality Act specifically refer to biological women and biological sex.

“I love it when a plan comes together,” Rowling wrote on X alongside the hashtags #SupremeCourt and #WomensRights and a photo of herself smoking a cigar, an apparent reference to A-Team character and master tactician John “Hannibal” Smith.

Rowling’s support of the legislation is “some serious Voldemort villain s–t,” said Ra’ouf. The author is “just so proud of all the work that she’s been doing over the last few years to stoke hatred and fear into the general public about a very small minority population that’s already some of the most misunderstood people on the earth,” he added.

“Awful disgusting S–T is exactly right,” Pascal responded. “Heinouse LOSER behavior.”

Ra’ouf’s words echo Pascal’s from February 2025 when he commented, “I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist.”

Pascal has made his support for the transgender community clear for years, and most recently wore a t-shirt reading “Protect the Dolls” to the U.K. premiere of “Thunderbolts*” in London on Tuesday, April 22. His sister, Lux, came out as a transgender woman in February 2021.

“Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan also spoke out against Rowling this week. On Sunday Coughlan shared an article in her Instagram Story from The Cut condemning Rowling’s response to a recent U.K. Supreme Court ruling on trans women and added, “Keep your new ‘Harry Potter’ lads. Wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole.”

‘The Masked Singer’: Nessy Loved Ken’s Absurd Guess of Sting Just for the Validation

Ken Jeong may have made his fellow “The Masked Singer” panelists groan and roll their eyes once again when he guessed Nessy was Sting last week, but for Nessy himself, it was a guess he welcomed, simply because it marked a redemption moment.

Indeed, Nessy was the singer unmasked on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” taking us down to the final four contestants on the Fox singing competition. Who was actually under the mask? Obviously, it wasn’t sting.

In reality, it was Edwin McCain, the singer best known for his hit song “I’ll Be.”

But, in reflecting on that particular guess from Jeong with TheWrap, McCain recalled an embarrassing moment on a trip with his family, and it actually did involve Sting.

“We’re listening to Sting Pandora, and all of a sudden one of my songs comes on the Pandora channel,” McCain recounted. “And I looked over at my wife, I was like, ‘You see? You see?! You see I’m on Sting’s Pandora. I’m in the same conversation as Sting! And then a few more Sting songs come on, and then another one of my songs comes on. And I’m literally having a heart attack.”

But alas, it turned out that McCain and his family weren’t actually listening to a Sting station on Pandora; they were just listening to McCain’s own playlist. It took them about 15 minutes to realize it, and when they did, he was pretty embarrassed.

So, when Jeong threw out Sting as an actual guess to McCain’s hidden identity, it made the panelists and Nick Cannon groan, but it brought a whole lot of joy and redemption to Nessy himself.

“All I could think was, ‘Aha! I’m back in the conversation, man!” he said excitedly” “Me and Sting, yeah!”

McCain is looking forward to an invite to Sting’s Tuscany estate any day now.

“The Masked Singer” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

‘The Conners’ Creators Unpack Show’s Emotional, Unscripted Ending: ‘It Was a Surprise to Us’

Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Conners” Season 7 Episodes 5 and 6.

“The Conners” have said goodbye after 15 seasons across three shows in 37 years.

The ABC sitcom, a spinoff born out of the cancellation of its megahit “Roseanne” reboot, wrapped its run Wednesday with a heartwarming finale that left the beloved TV family a little bit better than when we found them.

The six-episode Season 7 followed as Dan (John Goodman) and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) worked to sue the opioid company that provided the medication that ultimately led to Roseanne Conner’s accidental overdose. Meanwhile, each member of the Conner family dealt with significant growth, including Mark (Ames McNamara) using his hacking skills to land a good job in New York without going to college; Becky (Lecy Goranson) keeping with her sobriety and landing a good job; Darlene (Sara Gilbert) repairing her relationship with Ben (Jay R. Ferguson; and Jackie ending up back on the force.

The final scene of the series featured a pretty normal meeting of the Conner family in the family living room, only actors got more and more emotional as they said goodnight to Dan. Then in the end he broke the fourth wall and looked directly at the camera, saying good night while holding his own tears back.

“It was a surprise to us. We did not know they were going to get there emotionally,” executive producer Dave Caplan told TheWrap.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a sitcom, or maybe even a drama, where the actors show the real emotions they are having. It was so touching and so real that we decided to leave,” executive producer Bruce Helford told TheWrap. “Dan saying goodbye to the audience, that was all John and it was wonderful.”

The finale also resolved the lawsuit with he opioid company, with Dan receiving a check for $700 after his deposition found that Roseanne was aware of the danger of the drugs she was on but continued to use them. That didn’t deter the family form moving forward however, so they celebrated their little win with a nice dinner.

“We worked pretty hard to avoid end of series cliches,” Caplan added. “There are traps that are easy to fall into, and we felt like out audience needed a more realistic version of where these characters would land at the end of the series, but still have a sense that they would go on with their lives.”

TheWrap spoke to the creators of “The Conners” about wrapping up the show’s legacy and if there could be more to come in the future.

TheWrap: How did you go about crafting where we’d leave these characters with this series finale?

Bruce Rasmussen: Well, we really wanted them to be like you said on the way up, but not in an unrealistic way, like winning a lottery.

Bruce Helford: We didn’t want to leave the audience in despair, especially nowadays.

Rasmussen: Everybody needs a boost.

Dave Caplan: All of the arcs of the characters, and you could even go all the way back to the original “Roseanne” show, we feel like it led us to these points. All of the things that they’ve been through sort of had a natural ending point for us. We don’t feel like we reached for anything. We feel like these are all natural conclusions of where these characters have gone, and for that reason, it feels honest to us.

I loved seeing Becky land a good job and keep her sobriety in check, especially with the joy she shared the news with her mother at the cemetery. A bit of a full circle moment for her given the tough spot we found her in at the start of the “Roseanne” reboot. How did you decide on that ending for her?

Rasmussen: She was always the smart one, and then we lost track of that as the show went on. And then the other Becky came in, when we saw the Sarah Chalke character, the way they wrote her she got a little bit goofier. Then when we did the reboot, we gave her the drinking problem. We put her through so much. For all three of us, I think we were like, “Let’s get back to who she was always meant to be.” And everybody’s been rooting for her so much.

Caplan: Even smart people end up going down emotional roads that are disasters for them. We really like the sense of realistic triumph that Becky has at the end of this. Even when she gets the great job she has a little bit of impostor syndrome. But through all of her emotional roller coasters, she persevered and ended up in a great place. I think that’s a pretty good, satisfying end for that character.

Helford: And we didn’t want her victory to be just because she found a man. We wanted it to be based on something that she herself accomplished.

Rasmussen: Lecy also said, “Can you please not marry me off?”

Mark ends up moving away and opts not to go to college but to use his hacking skills the right way. Why have him be the one Conner to leave Lanford?

Helford: Well, one thing is that one of the reasons he wasn’t in the finale was that he had to get going to school. He registered in Harvard. And also we wanted to make sure that his story had the full time to conclude it. We built so much to that moment, and didn’t want to squeeze it into the final episode with everything else that was going on.

Caplan: We did a lot of arcs where Mark was the great hope of the Conners to get out of generational poverty, and we always thought about, “How can we get him to an ivy league school so there’s hope at the end of “The Conners.” And then we started thinking, “Well, one way to subvert that is maybe it’s not college at all.” The decision to go to college is so much more complicated now than it used to be for a lot of young people. It was Darlene’s dream stick of her worth as a mom that she got her kid to a great school. So the twist that it might not be college and it might not be exactly what Darlene wanted for him, we thought was going to be really interesting to play with.

Helford: College was right for Becky, but it wasn’t necessarily right for Mark.

The insurance company ends up giving the family a small amount of money but they take it in stride. Could they have gotten more?

Helford: A lot of research was done for this. What happened to Dan in that interrogation is really what happened in a lot of the cases when they were able to prove that the person knew it was dangerous and still continued (to use opioids), then that person was no longer being jeopardized by the company. It’s still kind of ridiculous but that’s the way it played out in some of the courts. So we tried to follow what really would have probably happened, and this is probably what would have been the case. So many people, I’m sure, feel incredibly frustrated. They never got any justice, especially when the courts originally froze any lawsuits against the companies and gave them immunity — which was undone. This was a chance for everyone to voice, through John Goodman, through Dan, their frustration about what happened.

Rasmussen: It really comes down to what Dan says it is, “How much is a life worth? How much is her life worth?”

Caplan: We never really though about it being a big payoff, because the little guy doesn’t win. The lesson of “The Conners” is that if you think you’re going to get over on the big guy, it’s probably not going to happen. You’re going to have to struggle. But if you struggle and you hang together, good things can still happen. So it had to be an ending that kept in concert with the tone of “The Conners.”

Jackie ended up back on the police force. Kind of feels like the next great spinoff? Would you pursue any other spinoffs or are you done with the family for now?

Helford: We want the sincerity and the legacy of the finale to be noted. No one ever thought any of these things would come back. We started out to do one year of the reboot just to clean up the end of the “Roseanne” show. Then we had to clean up the end of the reboot, it just kind of kept itself going. But I think for right now, it’s a good time for one just to kind of appreciate 37 years of knowing this family, and 15 of those years actually on air, this cast, that was a very, very big thing for them to face, the end of that era.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

“The Conners” is available to stream on Hulu.

Greg Gutfeld Applauds ‘The Office’ Star Rainn Wilson for Calling Out MSNBC’s Biden Double-Standard: ‘Most Actors Wouldn’t Do That’ | Video

Greg Gutfeld applauded Rainn Wilson for calling out MSNBC for having a double-standard with how they covered Joe Biden’s presidency vs. Donald Trump’s.

On Wednesday’s episode of “The Five,” Gutfeld was quick to celebrate “The Office” alum’s interview with MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle where he voiced complaints over the liberal-leaning network’s coverage of Biden leading to media mistrust. The Fox News host said it was “healthy not to believe the media anymore.”

“What you saw there with Rainn Wilson is the evolution from an actor to a fully realized human being,” Gutfeld said. “Every actor begins as a blank slate and they embrace liberal beliefs because everyone around them in their industry embraces it. They adopt the same beliefs unaware that they just simply took on another role because they’re an actor.”

He continued: “If you’re lucky like Rainn, or Zachary Levi or Vince Vaughn, you suddenly realize ‘this is a role, it’s not real.’ That revelation then allows you to think for yourself and allows somebody like Rainn to go on there and go ‘wait hold on a minute.’ Most actors wouldn’t do that.”

Wilson’s clip calling out MSNBC came during Tuesday’s episode of his podcast “Soul Boom.” He told Ruhle he thought the network was in denial of Biden’s mental acuity during the waning months of his presidency but are now being overly critical of Trump’s return.

“This is where I would push back: when I see this kind of insight and passion being directed at the current administration and the lack of this kind of insight and passion being directed at the previous administration,” Wilson said. “I’m not talking about you, I’m talking about left-leaning news media organizations — were kind of like, ‘La la la la, everything’s fine. Look, the economy is great, la la la, immigration’s not that much of a problem,’ and really being Cleopatra, queen of denial.”

Ruhle pushed back saying Trump and X owner Elon Musk have sowed the distrust in the media.

Former Child Star Sophie Nyweide Was Pregnant When She Died

Former child star Sophie Nyweide was pregnant when she was found dead last week, according to multiple media reports.

The 24-year-old’s body was found in a wooded area along the banks of the Roaring Branch River in Bennington, Vermont, on April 14. TMZ was the first to report her pregnancy.

Vermont police said that a person who was with her called 911 to report that she was unresponsive. Less than an hour later, first responders pronounced her dead on the scene.

“An individual was present with Nyweide at the time of her death and they are cooperating with investigators,” Bennington police said. “The same individual was the person who contacted 911, summoning assistance for Nyweide.”

A now-deleted obituary shared by her family said, “She seemed happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else. It was a safe place for her.”

The obit also noted her trusting nature that led people to take “advantage” of her and that she “self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death” and that she “was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life.”

Nyweide made her screen debut as the title character in Alejandro Gómez Monteverde’s 2006 drama “Bella,” going on to play the daughter of Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal in 2009’s “Mammoth.” She also appeared in “Noah,” Noah Baumbach’s “Margot at the Wedding” and a 2007 episode of “Law & Order.”

The cause and manner of her death have not yet been released but Bennington police have stated they are investigating whether her death was “a possible unintentional overdose” or whether foul play was involved.

The Bennington Banner reported that Nyweide was charged last November with one count of felony Fentanyl trafficking and was facing a possible 30-year sentence if found guilty. She had previously pleaded guilty to narcotic possession in September 2024 and was given a suspended sentence and probation.

Nyweide’s mother is Shelly Gibson, who starred in “All My Children” and “St. Elsewhere.”

GOP Megadonor Ken Griffin Says Trump Is Bad for America’s Brand: ‘Can Be a Lifetime to Repair the Damage’ | Video

CEO Citadel Ken Griffin, a former GOP megadonor who voted for President Trump, said on Wednesday that the president’s trade wars are “nonsensical” and have already hurt the country’s “brand.”

“The United States was more than just a nation. It’s a brand. It’s a universal brand. Whether it’s our culture, our financial strength, our military strength, America rose beyond just being a country,” Griffin said Wednesday at Semafor’s World Economy Summit in Washington, D.C.

He warned that Trump’s trade tariffs are “eroding that brand right now.” He added that “no brand came close” to the U.S. treasury market, until now.

The US was "an aspiration for most of the world. And we're eroding that brand right now," Citadel CEO Ken Griffin tells @GinaChon.

The president, Treasury secretary, and Commerce secretary "need to be very thoughtful … because when you tarnish that brand, it can be a lifetime… pic.twitter.com/GlxhN7r2R9

— Semafor (@semafor) April 23, 2025

“As you and I both know,” he told Semafor Senior Editor Gina Chon, “it can take a very long time, very long time, to remove the tarnish on a brand.”

He urged Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of Commerce Howard W. Lutnick to be “very thoughtful” and “behave in a way that respects that brand, that strengthens that brand.” He warned. “It can be a lifetime to repair the damage that has been done.”

At the summit, Griffin said he and other executives were eagerly anticipating portions of Trump’s economic plan, including slashing federal regulations, and mentioned that the tariffs were “well-intended,” Bloomberg reported.

“Unfortunately, the trade war, which has devolved into a nonsensical place, means we’re spending time thinking about supply chains,” Griffin said.

“President Trump has an incredibly good sense of where problems lie,” the CEO continued. “But we’re moving too quickly, we’re moving too haphazardly and we’re breaking a lot of glass in trying to solve some very real problems.”

In the past, Griffin referred to Trump as a “three-time” loser, but told the New York Times in December that he voted for him and is glad that the 2024 election went Trump’s way.

You can watch the Ken Griffin segment in the video above.

‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Will Be Longest in the Franchise

The final “Mission: Impossible” will be the longest film in the whole franchise.

TheWrap confirmed with a source close to production that “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” will have the longest runtime in the entire action franchise. The Tom Cruise-starring film is being touted as the final entry in the series that began back in 1996.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” will reportedly clock in at 2 hours and 49 minutes. That beats out the last film – “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” – which ran for 2 hours and 42 minutes. If the movie is indeed the finale to the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, it seems they are leaving as much in the last cut as possible.

Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct after steering “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” The eighth film in the franchise was initially titled “Dead Reckoning Part Two” but after the box office underperformance of the previous film, Paramount retitled this movie “The Final Reckoning.”

The plot of “The Final Reckoning” is being kept under wraps for the most part but with the big AI-based cliffhanger from “Dead Reckoning” it will likely pick up a number of those threads.

Alongside Cruise, the star-studded cast includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Mark Gatiss, Rolf Saxon, Lucy Tulugarjuk and Angela Bassett.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” opens only in theaters on May 23.

Jimmy Kimmel Jokes Pete Hegseth Leaks So Much He ‘Should Be Wearing Depends to Work’ | Video

Jimmy Kimmel didn’t buy Pete Hegseth’s attempt to deflect criticism of his actions by blaming the people who brought attention to his actions. And in his monologue on Tuesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” he explained in slightly scatological terms.

Kimmel got to this as he transitioned from the topic of a search for a new Pope.

“So, we have a new Pope on the way, and maybe a new Secretary of Defense soon. If you see white smoke coming from the Pentagon – it means they fired Pete Hegseth,” Kimmel joked.

“Pete Hegseth is getting hammered,” Kimmel continued, “not the way he used to,” which of course is a reference to the multiple reports of Hegseth’s problem drinking, “this time he’s getting hammered over new bombshell revelations literally about bombshell revelations.”

Kimmel then reminded viewers of precisely what’s happening — that Hegseth is in the middle of yet another classified information scandal involving the encrypted communication app Signal.

“After The New York Times uncovered another unauthorized group chat, this one from his personal phone, in which he shared the secret and very sensitive details of a military strike, with his wife, his lawyer and his brother,” the ABC host said.

“His brother turns out is his senior adviser, in case, just in case you’re wondering, worried there was only one unqualified Hegseth running the military. There are two,” Kimmel joked.

“You know, my wife and my brother work with me, not once have I shared my secret war plans for Matt Damon. That’s between me and Guillermo Team 6,” Kimmel quipped. “We keep it, we keep it tight. But Pete Hegseth is not as tight-lipped, I guess.”

Kimmel then explained how what happened is that an Army general told Hegseth about plans for a surprise attack on Houthi rebels based in Yemen. And then Hegseth immediately started sharing that information with his wife and brothers and his lawyer, none of whom have clearance to view such information.

This is, to be clear, separate from the other Signal group that Hegseth was part of, where Jonah Goldberg of The Atlantic was invited to, in which the same classified information was illegally shared.

“And now he’s in a lot of trouble. So, he rushed back to his old stomping grounds. the friendly confines at Fox this morning to make his case,” Kimmel continued, explaining how Hegseth blamed whoever brought his actions to light, implying all sorts of conspiracy theories about them.

“It was bullshit from the beginning too,” Kimmel continued before pretending to address Hegseth personally. “You texted the exact time and place the secret bombing would begin before the secret bombing happened. To your wife on an easily hackable phone.”

“And his defense for this is, ‘who told you? And how dare they tell you?’ This is like your wife catching you in bed with another woman and your response is – ‘well, why did you come home so early?’ Our Secretary of Defense is defenseless,” Kimmel added.

“But it’s not his fault, the ones who get the blame for this, are the leakers,” Kimmel went on before addressing Hegseth again. “You don’t have, you don’t have time for leakers? You are the Leaker! You’re the one who leaked this! You leak so much – you should be wearing Depends to work!”
