YouTube, Disney, Netflix Hold Steady as Top 3 Most-Watched for August, Nielsen Says
YouTube, Disney and Netflix held steady as the top three companies in Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge for August.
Though YouTube gave up 0.3 share points, it finished the month on top with 13.1% of viewing. Disney finished in second with a share of 9.7%, which was driven by a 4% bump for ABC affiliates and 25% surge for ESPN due to the return of football season. Netflix lost 0.1 share point, but held steady in third with 8.7% of television on the strength of owning the top four streaming titles of the month.
Football also contributed to gains for NBCUniversal and Paramount, which rounded out the top five at 7.6% and 7.1% of TV viewing, respectively, and Fox, which was given a 14% boost from its affiliates to reach a 6.7% share, putting it in sixth place.

When comparing the first and last weeks of the August interval, viewing for Fox affiliates was up 36%, ABC affiliates gained 29% and ESPN surged 196%, which was due at least in part to the season premiere of “College GameDay.” Disney’s share of TV started at 8.9% in the first week of the month and concluded with 11.5% of TV in the final week.
The remainder of the list included Warner Bros. Discovery with 5.8% of TV viewing, Amazon with 3.9%, The Roku Channel with 2.8%, Scripps with 2.2%, Weigel with 1.4%, A+E and Hallmark with 1.1% each and AMC Networks with 0.8%.

Overall, the broadcast and cable categories notched their first TV viewership gains since April, finishing the month with shares of 19.1% and 22.5%, respectively. As for streaming, the category finished August with a share of 46.4%, down over 4% from the previous month.
Total time spent watching TV was down 2% month-over-month in August, but viewing among kids and teens ages six to 17 was down 9% over the same period.
Viewing levels between the first (July 28 to Aug. 3) and last weeks (Aug. 25 to Aug. 31) of the interval dropped 21%. Streaming usage among school-aged viewers also exhibited similar declines, dropping 8% on a monthly basis in August, and losing 22% from the first week versus the last week of the month.

Jon Stewart Urges Trump’s Defenders to Join the Rest of America and ‘Fight Like Hell’ for Our Constitution | Video
Jon Stewart was back in “The Daily Show” anchor chair on Monday night, where he got to celebrate the reinstatement of Jimmy Kimmel to massive applause from his Comedy Central audience.
“Young Jimmy Kimmel’s coming back to television,” he began the episode. “That campaign that you all launched pretending that you were going to cancel Hulu, while secretly racing through four seasons of ‘Only Murders in the Building?’ That really worked. Congratulations.”
“Wasn’t it interesting to try to figure out all the tentacles Disney has in your daily life? It’s one thing to swear off cruises, but Avengers? How is it possible that by getting rid of one company, I can’t watch ‘Winnie the Pooh’ or Monday Night Football’ or listen to early Hilary Duff?” Stewart continued. “It was rather shocking that this turnaround occurred, because I was told that the original decision to get rid of Jimmy had nothing to do with the Trump administration and their explicit FCC threat that they could remove the show the easy way or the hard way.”

At that, multiple news clips began playing of Trump’s administration and other public supporters downplaying the president’s involvement in getting his political opponents jailed, fired and/or canceled.
“Now, most people would think that a president ordering his independent Department of Justice to go after his political opponents is weaponizing the Department of Justice. That’s why most people don’t work in this administration,” Stewart continued. “At this point, it’s so blatantly an abuse of power, and yet his defenders continue to reframe this as refreshing.”
“I just want to say this to Trump’s defenders: You don’t have to bend over backwards trying to make Trump’s authoritarian power grabs seem like the rule of law; he does not give a f–k anymore, he’s saying it straight up,” he said in conclusion. “Trump is saying, ‘The people like dictators,’ Trump is saying, ‘I hate my opponents and I want them punished,’ and Trump is saying, ‘I’ll use all the leverage of government at my disposal to accomplish that goal.’ So you can get on board with that and say I’m with that, or you can join the rest of us and fight like hell for this Constitutional republic.”
Indeed, the Walt Disney Company ended Kimmel’s six-day indefinite suspension on Monday: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Last week, Stewart stepped in for host Desi Lydic on an atypical Thursday night episode following Wednesday’s news of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” being preempted
“From Comedy Central. It’s the all new government-approved ‘Daily Show’ with your patriotically obedient host, Jon Stewart,” the episode began. It was followed by an entire half-hour long bit in which “TDS” was reimagined as a state-run propaganda farm with plenty of praise for Trump and his allies.
“We have another fun, hilarious, administration-compliant show,” the comedian further joked. “I’m coming in tonight from a real s—thole, the crime-ridden cesspool that is New York City. It is a tremendous disaster like no one’s ever seen before. Someone’s National Guard should invade this place. Am I right?”
“I don’t know who this ‘Johnny Dribble Live’ ABC character is, but the point is, our great administration has laid out very clear rules on free speech,” Stewart said in conclusion last week. “Now some naysayers may argue that this administration’s speech concerns are merely a cynical ploy, a thin gruel of a ruse, a smokescreen to obscure an unprecedented consolidation of power and unitary intimidation, principle-less and coldly antithetical to any experiment in a constitutional republic governance. Some people would say that. Not me, though. I think it’s great!”

‘Brilliant Minds’ Boss Breaks Down Season 2 Premiere Twist, Wolf’s ‘Propulsive’ Mental Health Crisis
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Brilliant Minds” Season 2, Episode 1.
“Brilliant Minds” plunges viewers into what we can only imagine is Dr. Oliver Wolf’s worst nightmare in the Season 2 premiere, when he can be seen desperately trying to escape a mental institution and this time, Zachary Quinto’s Wolf is the patient not the doctor.
Rather than a nightmare, viewers quickly learn these flash-forwards happen six months in the future. The story of how Wolf ended up in the institution, named Hudson Oaks, will be sprinkled across the NBC medical drama’s second season, according to showrunner Michael Grassi.
“A lot of last season was about understanding Oliver’s past and his relationship with his father and his mom, and how complicated that was, and how a lot of that made him the doctor he is today,” Grassi told TheWrap. “This season is about continuing that story, but in a brand new way, with this propulsive, new device of these flash forwards and finding Oliver in this very specific situation where he’s fighting for his life … What’s going to be the thing that breaks Oliver and sends him to Hudson Oaks?
Given “Brilliant Minds'” focus on neurology, psychiatry and mental health, Grassi hopes the new storyline will shine a light on these newer types of mental health institutions that are accessible to more than just the uber rich and aren’t the “asylums of the past.” “We’re digging into what these facilities in America look like today, and how patients can really benefit from them and … how it can be hard to accept help from them,” Grassi said.

A breadcrumb as to what led Wolf to a supposed mental health crisis is left at the end of the Season 2 premiere, when Wolf returns home to see that his dad, Noah (Mandy Patinkin), left him again, just shy of a month after Oliver agreed to let Noah live with him as he investigated Noah’s brain condition.
“Wolf is in a really strange situation, because he spent his whole life and a lot of Season 1, dealing with that and processing that, and he’s, in so many ways, grieved his father,” Grassi said, noting that Wolf’s grief of losing his father again and how he deals with that grief is a big part of Season 2. Grassi, however, remained tight-lipped about whether Season 2 would see Patinkin return as Noah.
Below, Grassi unpacks the growth in Oliver’s relationship with his mother and his ongoing tension with Josh and teases what that new resident has in store.
TheWrap: Oliver is also coming to terms with the fact that his mom lied to him abut his dad, but she’s also there when he leaves again. Where do they stand right now?
Grassi: A lot of last season, we spent a lot of time with Wolf putting some of his feelings onto mom and showing the strains of their relationships, and when his dad re-emerged, I think his mind immediately clicked into, “My mom orchestrated this,” but a lot of that episode was learning that it actually wasn’t her, it’s what his father wanted. That was a big step in healing and seeing that it wasn’t always his mom who was manipulating situations — sometimes it was his dad as well, and she really does apologize to him at the end of 113, so when we catch up to them in the new season, there are still big feelings, and there’s a lot boiling under the surface, but I think they’re in a new place together and a brand new dynamic, and it’s really fun to see their scene work and where they go. Seeing Muriel be worried about Oliver so interesting and exciting. It’s never more exciting to me than when Donna [Murphy] and Zach are in scenes together.
Oliver also burned the bridge with Josh but they still clearly have some tension. What can you tease about their relationship this season?
Listen, they’re both complicated guys, and that’s what makes their scenes so good. Wolf was dealing with a lot last season — whether standing up Nichols was right or wrong, it’s what he needed to do in that moment, and I think that was hurtful to Nichols for a number of reasons, but Josh has had some weird things with Wolf like, “Do you respect what I do?” so they’ve had some interesting work tension as well … which is very real to what neurologists and neurosurgeons deal with in real life. There’s always a little bit of tension between those two doctors … they’re still working through what they mean to each other and what their relationship means, but it’s about to get way more complicated than it is easier. What’s nice is they will always be in each other’s orbit, and these are two people who care deeply about each other. It’s a bit of a roller coaster with Josh and Wolf this season, but what I’ll say is that there’s a lot of respect there.
We also see Carol enjoying the luxuries of private medicine but it’s not enough for her and she eventually asks for her job back. Where is she at in terms of how she feels about what happened?
The same way she fights for her patients, the same way Wolf fights for his patients, I think she wants to fight for her job back. A lot of the next episode is going to be seeing her navigate what that means and how that looks for her, and how she’s going to go about that. What she’s dealing with is really nuanced and complex, and yes, she made a mistake, but she also saved someone’s life, and that’s complicated, and we’re going to see her work through that.
We also meet a new resident Charlie, whose intentions don’t quite seem pure. What can you tell us about him and how he shakes up dynamics with the interns?
I love all of our interns so much, and we had them be this surrogate family last year, where they really leaned on each other, and they were group hugging, and they were learning hard lessons with Wolf. Charlie comes in and he sees them, and he’s like, “What is this?” This is not what he’s used to in professional settings. He’s just looking to poke at this and maybe upend a little bit of what we’ve established last season, but in a way that feels real to medicine and his perspective on medicine, which we’ll continue to learn more about throughout the season. Charlie pursued this job, he pursued this position, to work with Wolf, the big question is, why?
You have so many fun guest stars this season, from Jane Krakowski to Porsha Williams. How did Porsha’s casting come together and what was it like working w her?
She is just such a star and she’s so beloved in the “Real Housewives” franchise, and having her come to set was so fun for us. I was flying to Toronto, and my phone rings in the airport, and it’s Porsha, and she just called me to say that she had the best time on the show, and she loved working with Tamberla [Perry] and she was like, “Bitsy, needs to come back.”
Same with someone like Jane Krakowski, she was always my number one. And when we cooked up, this is a story that we’ve always sort of wanted to tell about a woman under in a conservatorship, and when we were brainstorming, the first person we thought of was Jane Krakowski — she would be so perfect with this, because she can handle some of the more comedic elements story, but at the same time also the emotional and more nuanced part of the storytelling that we do on “Brilliant Minds.”
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
“Brilliant Minds” premieres Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Kamala Harris Calls Trump a Tyrant Who Uses the Federal Government to ‘Take Out Vengeance on His Critics’ | Video
Former Vice President Kamala Harris stopped by “The Rachel Maddow Show” for her first primetime interview since the 2024 election on Monday night, and she used the appearance to explain why President Donald Trump’s handling of the Jimmy Kimmel situation makes him a “tyrant.”
“Here’s the thing: democracy sustains capitalism; capitalism thrives in a democracy. And right now we are dealing with — as I called him at my speech on the Ellipse — a tyrant. We used to compare the strength of our democracy to communist dictators; that’s what we’re dealing with right now with Donald Trump,” she said on MSNBC. “And these titans of industry are not speaking up. And perhaps it is because his threats and the way he has used the weight of the federal government to take out vengeance on his critics is something that they fear. And I get that, I understand why they do.”

“I always believed that if push came to shove, those titans of industry would be guardrails for our democracy, for the importance of sustaining democratic institutions. And one by one by one, they have been silent,” Harris continued. “You know, yes, I use the word ‘Feckless.’ It’s not like they’re going to lose their yacht or their house in the Hamptons.”
“At some point, they’ve got to stand up, for the sake of the people who rely on all of these institutions to have integrity and to, at some point, be the guardrails against a tyrant who is using the federal government to execute his whim and fancy,” she reiterated, further accusing Trump of having a “fragile ego.”
Luckily, according to the “107 Days” author, the American public did use their voice to let Disney and ABC know they were wrong to allow Trump and FCC chairman Brendan Carr to overstep on Kimmel’s Freedom of Speech.
“Talk about the power being with the people and the people making that clear with their checkbooks as it relates to the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel,” Harris added. “We saw the power of the people over the last few days, and it spoke volumes, it moved a decision in the right direction.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the former presidential candidate opened up about ultimately choosing Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate — and, more specifically, why she felt unable to choose Pete Buttigieg instead.
“That’s not what I said, that he couldn’t be on the ticket because he is gay. My point is, as I write in the book, is that I was clear that in 107 days, in one of the most hotly contested elections for president of the United States, against someone like Trump, who knows no floor,” Harris explained. “To be a Black woman running for president of the United States and as a vice presidential running mate a gay man, with the stakes being so high, it made me very sad, but I also realized it would be a real risk.”
“I’ve been an advocate and an ally of the LGBT community my entire life, it wasn’t about any prejudice on my part, but we had such a short period of time and the stakes were so high,” she continued. “I think Pete is a phenomenal, phenomenal public servant and I think America is and would be ready for that, but when I had to make that decision with two weeks to go — and maybe I was being too cautious … we should all talk about that, maybe I was, but that’s the decision I made. And as with everything else in the book, I’m being very candid about that, with a great deal of sadness about also the fact that it might have been a risk.”

Jimmy Kimmel Should Come Back With Weekly Trump Voters as Guests, Clay Travis Pitches | Video
Clay Travis doesn’t love the apparent double standard when it comes to Disney cancel culture, but he has an idea for how Jimmy Kimmel can improve his late night show once he returns from his six-day indefinite suspension on Tuesday.
“I will share the idea that I put out there, that I shared with Jimmy himself: I think Jimmy Kimmel should come back on Tuesday, I think he should say that the phrase that he used to try to discuss Charlie Kirk was ill-written and poorly delivered,” the radio host told Will Cain on Fox News. “I also think he should say one of the reasons this might have occurred is because my writing staff might not really be aware of what half the country is talking about.”

Travis then pitched a potential pledge that Kimmel and the hosts of “The View” should self-impose going forward in order to combat their implicit bias.
“I would say, he should say every week from now on, we’re going to have a Donald Trump voter on as a guest, and we’re going to make it a part — since this is a talk show that’s supposed to speak to all of America — of trying to hear from all of America. Doesn’t mean that it’s strident politically or anything like that,” he explained. “I would say he could start with Adam Carolla, his old friend on ‘The Man Show.’ We had him on ‘Clay and Buck’ today, who is a Trump-supporting, L.A. comedian. I think this is a no-brainer, I think it would be a smart move. I don’t know if he’ll do it, but that’s the way that I would say he should go about trying to address what he said on the show last week.”
Indeed, Disney decided on Monday to reinstate “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” starting Tuesday, nearly a week after suspending him for his coverage of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Local affiliate owner Sinclair, however, still intends to preempt the new episodes as they await a formal apology and donation to Turning Point USA.

— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) September 22, 2025
Elsewhere in the Monday Fox News segment, host Cain admitted he was less forgiving than Travis, who himself ultimately agreed with ABC and Disney’s move: “I would say this is the right decision, because I don’t like the idea of deciding based on one comment that we’re not going to have somebody on the air anymore, whether they’re a Democrat, Republican or an Independent.”
“I don’t want to be lectured about the First Amendment from anyone who said nothing when Roseanne’s top rated show was pulled off the air seven years ago; from people who said nothing when Gina Carano’s show pulled off Disney+, because people didn’t like their social media postings,” he further noted. “I didn’t hear a single person on the Left, I didn’t hear a single person in Hollywood speak out — they all cheered it, in fact.”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is set to return to most households Tuesday night on ABC.

Stephen Colbert Can’t Hide His Elation at Jimmy Kimmel’s Return: ‘Once More I Am the Only Martyr in Late Night!’ | Video
Stephen Colbert is alone again — and he’s loving it.
The “Late Show” host shared a clip of Monday’s broadcast on Instagram, telling his audience that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is set to return to ABC on Tuesday. This news, also announced Monday, comes after Kimmel was suspended by ABC less than a week prior following comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s death.
“This martyrdom ain’t big enough for the both of us!” Colbert’s Instagram post read.

“This is wonderful news for my dear friend Jimmy and his amazing staff. They get to do their show. You know, I’m so happy for them. Plus, now that Jimmy’s not being cancelled, I get to enjoy this again,” Colbert said, holding up his recently won Emmy to the camera.
In the clip, Colbert jokingly rejoices in his Emmy win — a victory celebration he temporarily delayed in the fallout of Kimmel’s suspension on Wednesday. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” won its first Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series in mid-September after the show was cancelled by CBS earlier this year.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by The Late Show (@colbertlateshow)
While Colbert’s opening monologues often feature the host cracking jokes about the current political climate, he reveled in the opportunity to start Monday’s show with a bit of celebration.
“We do like 160 of these a year or something, and, you know, when I have the chance, it’s always nice to start the show with some good news,” Colbert said. “Well, just a few hours before we taped this broadcast, we got word that our long, national ‘late nightmare’ is over, because Disney announced that ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will return to air on ABC tomorrow, Tuesday night.”
“Come on! Woo! Woo!” Colbert shouted, peaking his mic’s audio levels.
The comedian ended the segment by daring to hope for a bit of good news for his own show — which was canceled by CBS in July after he accused his parent company of giving “a big, fat bribe” to the Trump administration in hopes of securing a Paramount/Skydance merger. Executives, however, cited financial reasons as the cause for the “Late Show’s” cancellation.
“Once more, I am the only martyr in late night. Wait, unless,” Colbert said before turning to the camera, “CBS, you want to announce anything?”

‘Catfish: The TV Show’ Canceled After 9 Seasons, Producers Shopping Series Elsewhere
MTV has canceled “Catfish: The TV Show” after nine seasons, TheWrap has learned.
The reality series will halt its investigative mission into deceptive online relationships at MTV, but the network has given producers the green light to shop the series elsewhere. However, MTV will continue to air the series’ library of episodes post-cancellation.

“Catfish: The TV Show” premiered in 2012 on MTV and concluded its ninth season in July 2024. Nev Schulman hosted the reality series based on his 2010 documentary of the same name, in which he coined the term “catfish” for a person who presents a false identity to deceive others online. The reality series specifically discovered the truth about suspected romantic catfishes, deceiving potential partners.
The series was developed by Schulman, Ariel Schulman and Max Joseph. Nev Schulman and Joseph co-hosted the show for its first seven seasons. In 2018, celebrity guest hosts, including Elle King, Charlamagne Tha God and Machine Gun Kelly, replaced Joseph and appeared alongside Schulman. Kamie Crawford then joined as a permanent host with Schulman halfway through Season 7.
The fate of “Catfish: The TV Show” had been up in the air since Season 9 concluded in July 2024 amid the Paramount merger. Fans were not hopeful for the show’s return when its host announced his “new chapter” as a New York City real estate agent in early September.
The MTV series has spawned a cult following of catfish content, with international spinoffs in Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Plus, recent Netflix documentary “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish” went viral and has maintained viewership dominance on the streamer in the weeks since its release.

Coachella 2026 Completely Sells Out With Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter Lineup
Coachella is set to be at capacity next spring, as the music festival confirmed Monday both weekends are completely sold out.
Organizers for the popular music and arts festival shared the news on Instagram, where they uploaded a video that was labeled, “2026 Passes Sold Out.”
To further emphasize their point, organizers cheekily added in the caption, “She’s gone, dance on. See you in April.”
The update came three days after the Indio, California-based festival released tickets for the 2026 event, where Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Karol G and Anyma were all named headliners last week.

While both VIP passes and general admission tickets have been since scooped up, there’s still a chance for some hopeful fans to acquire tickets in the coming months via a waitlist.
Like in years past, the 2026 festival will take place over the course of two weekends — with the first weekend running between April 10 and 12 and the second taking place between April 17 and 19.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Coachella (@coachella)
Coachella made a splash last week when they revealed Bieber as headliner for the Saturday nights over the two-weekend event — a first for his career. However, the singer has made several guest appearances over the years, including a performance with Tems and WizKid during their 2024 set.
The Coachella gig comes on the heels of Bieber’s seventh studio album, “Swag,” which dropped earlier this summer. Bieber has not yet officially announced his setlist for his Coachella gig.
In addition to Bieber, Disclosure, Katseye, The Strokes, Addison Rae, Young Thug, Iggy Pop, Major Lazer, Moby, Central Cee, Lykke Li, Green Velvet, David Byrne and more are set to perform at Coachella 2026.

An Angelic Keanu Reeves Anchors New Trailer for ‘Good Fortune’
It’s time to get ready for “Good Fortune.”
Earlier this month, “Good Fortune” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, before arriving in theaters on October 17. The comedic fantasy, which Aziz Ansari wrote, directed, produced and stars in, features Keanu Reeves as a “budget guardian angel” who swaps the places of a wealthy man (Seth Rogen) and a struggling gig worker (Ansari). And if you want a new taste of the movie, watch the trailer below.
The film also stars Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Set to the tune of Sylvester and Patrick Cowley’s disco classic “Do You Wanna Funk?” and featuring some truly incredible one-lines from Rogen, Ansari and, in particular, Reeves, this new trailer makes the movie look like a total blast.
When the film premiered at TIFF, it was warmly reviewed and is currently sitting at an 83 on Rotten Tomatoes and 69 on Metacritic. Our own review of “Good Fortune” said that it was “sparkling with fantastically funny performances that make a 90-minute comedy worth it in the end” (it’s quoted in the above trailer).
In the past few years comedies have largely been relegated to streaming services, but with the success of projects like the R-rated Glen Powell/Sydney Sweeney romantic comedy “Anyone But You” (which made more than $220 million worldwide) and recent “Naked Gun” reboot for Paramount (which $100 million globally after opening last month), it seems like the theatrical comedy could very well be back.
“Good Fortune” will hit theaters on October 17.
