Monday Music: The End?
No, not the end of Monday Music. That would be crazy…
When ships left their ports early on in human seafaring, onlookers watched in horror as the boats seemed to sink and disappear due to the curvature of the earth blocking out the spectator’s line of sight. This lead many to believe that the ships had fallen off the edge of the world.
But we all know now that the earth is round, right?
Well, maybe not all of us. There is still a flat Earth society, but I won’t go down that rabbit hole except to say that one of the four corners of the Earth is in Canada:

That bump is Brimstone Head on Fogo island off the coast of Newfoundland. And if you think it’s just a joke, why would there be a warning sign?

Anyway, here is some music celebrating the end to the world, but I’m not going to include the obvious one.
Endings take different forms and some endings just mean there’s a new beginning on the horizon. Here’s a song about the end of a relationship.
This next song was co-written by some of the members of the Canadian band Alvvays who I featured a few weeks ago.
Jonathan Percy Starker “JP” Saxe is a Canadian singer and musician. He is best known for this collaboration with American singer Julia Michaels titled “If the World Was Ending”.
Alec Duckart, known professionally as Searows, is an American singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon.

Songs for a Sunday: Alice Merton
Alice Florence Clarissa Merton (born 13 September 1993) is a British-based German-Canadian singer-songwriter. Merton achieved mainstream success with her debut single, “No Roots”. In 2017, she released her first EP of the same name and in 2019, she released her debut album Mint and in 2022, her second album, S.I.D.E.S. was released. [Wikipedia]
For the longest time I thought this next song was Katy Perry:

Weekend Wrap-up June 7: Newsletter News

If you subscribe to my newsletter, you know how entertaining and informative it is. If you don’t subscribe to my newsletter, that’s okay too because if you read my blog you get pretty much the same stuff.
I recently made a change going from bi-monthly to monthly. Why the change? I’m hoping more subscribers will open and click on some of the links since most book promos start at the beginning of the month, so a mid-month newsletter doesn’t contain a lot of new material.
It is also less work for me.
Writing Update: I’m almost halfway through the first draft of book three in the Orion Arm Alliance series. Book one follows the mystery of a young man awaking onboard a starship with no memory of how he got there. Book two is a prequel where we find out how Earth entered the Alliance and how the cadets in book one meet and uncover the truth of the death of one of their mothers.
Book three (as yet unnamed) picks up where book one leaves off as the cadets enter year three of the Alliance Academy and are thrust into a interplanetary conflict.

Just for Fun Friday: Readers are Authors Too.

In 2020, the world came crashing to a halt, not because of the release of my short story collection, but because—well, you know. Since I had nothing else to do other than being a designated grocery shopper, I did part two of my self-interview series, this time interviewing myself as the author.
Did you read it then? Maybe you didn’t know me or perhaps you forgot about the hilarity that ensued…
The Very Second One: Leon Stevens, Reader, Interviews Leon Stevens, the AuthorToday we have the pleasure [eyeroll] of sitting down with Leon Stevens, the author. How have you been?
– Considering all that has been happening, I have been OK. You?
You know the same as I do. We share a place, remember?
– Just being polite, you know.
Moving on. You have some exciting news to tell.
– Had.
What?
– I had some news. Like a month ago.
Would you like to share it?
– That’s why we are here, isn’t it?
Yes, indeed. Let me spill the proverbial beans then–
– I’m not going to clean those up.
[silence]
Do you want me to say it or not?
– Go ahead.
You published your second book this year, a science fiction book, I believe?
– That is correct. It’s called The Knot at the End of the Rope and Other Short Stories.
Interesting title. How did you come up with that?
– It’s the first story in the book, and the rest tells you what is in it.
But what does it mean?
– You will have to read and find out.
I did. You know that.
– Then why are you asking?
I thought that other readers would like to know.
– Well, it’s all about how choices that life gives us are not always good things, I guess. It is the shortest story in the book.
You like writing short stories, don’t you?
– My stories always seem to come to a natural conclusion sooner rather than later. Say what you want about short attention spans…
Do you have a favori—Wait! Where are you going?
[from another room] – I thought we were done.
No. We are not.
– Want some coffee?
Sure. Are you using the press?
– Is there any other way?
Nope.
[elapsed time: 15 minutes]
– Here you go.
Thank you. Shall we continue?
– Fire away.
[sipping sounds]
Mmm, good coffee.
– Thank you. It’s one of my favorite things.
Before the break, I was asking if you have a favorite story?
– That’s tough. Each story has its charm in how it came about and what ideas I was trying to convey. But if I had to choose–
You do.
– As I was saying, if I had to choose, it would be Reasonable Hand-drawn Facsimile.
Because?
– Probably because it has elements of humor. It made me laugh when I thought about it. My editor said that she laughed out loud when she read it. Now, that’s the sign of good humor writing.
Do you consider yourself a humor writer?
– Quite a bit of my writing has elements of humor, so yes. I like to make people laugh.
There are quite a few post-apocalyptic stories in the book as well, along with poetry. Poetry? What’s up with that?
– I don’t know which came first, the stories or the poems, but I recall coming up with the idea that sometime in the future, writings from after an apocalyptic event would be found. So naturally, I named the series Found.
That sounds like the premise of the book, A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr.
– That’s not far off. I didn’t mean it to be, but as I was coming up with the poems, it was a book that came to mind. It is the first post-apocalyptic book that I remember reading.
You write many different styles. Do you think that will limit your appeal by segmenting your readership?
– Well, I do now. Thanks a lot.
I’m not saying it’s a bad thing.
– Limiting my appeal? Or writing different styles?
I thought I was asking the questions here…
– Can’t we have a spirited discourse once and a while?
How long have you been waiting to throw in that word?
– Quite some time. Impressed?
Very. OK. Back to my point. I’m just worried that your poetry readers won’t like your science fiction stories and vice versa.
– I’ve thought about that. But if I am inspired to write something, I don’t want to limit myself. I still write poetry. It took me four years to publish my first book of poetry—I’m not going to be able to put out another right away. I hope my readership will embrace my eclectic writing. It is about entertaining and keeping readers engaged.
And how do you do that?
– I began to write a blog, which became more of a satirical/humorous take on life. Then when I started my newsletter to keep my readers updated on my writing journey—
Writing journey. I like that.
– Thank you. Anyhoo, I try to keep my weekly newsletters informative and entertaining. I hope that people read and appreciate them.
Ever thought of doing a podcast?
– I wouldn’t know where to start. Do you?
Not a clue. Last question: Who are The Miniscules I keep hearing about?
– You’ve heard about them from other people?
Not really. I just thought that we should mention them.
– Oh.
They are dear to your heart, are they not?
– No. Not really. I’d miss them if they went away, though.
But they’re not going anywhere, right?
– Nope. They still have lots to say.
Well, thank you for taking to time to answer some questions. Any final thoughts?
– You’re going to clean up those beans, right?
Yes. Not to worry…
– Don’t forget to take out the garbage when you go.
I’m not going anywhere. I live here.
– Oh, right. Another cup of coffee?
Please.

Thursday Thoughts: On Marketing

When I first started my writing journey back in 2019, I had no clue how to approach the marketing side of being an author. To be honest, I still don’t think I know that much. Thankfully there was Google and many, many blogs and forums with advice from other writers in the same boat.
So, six years later, do I know what works?
Ha!
Like technology, the “marketing de jour” changes rapidly, and back then it was all about mailing lists and newsletter subscribers. Then is was cross-promotion through group promotions and swapping book mentions with other authors. Blog book tours was a thing, as were book trailers.
Though all this, social media was touted as a way to reach millions of potential readers until the platforms decided that we needed to see ads, clickbait, politically charged content, and of course, people doing stupid things.
Book promotion websites popped up like dandelions in spring (and all through summer even during drought) guaranteeing to reach tens of thousands of readers—for a fee of course. Amazon, as long as you publish exclusively through them, graciously lets you pay them to advertise to the readers who shop on the Kindle platform.
The one piece of advice I kept seeing answering the question, “How do you sell more books?” was, “Write more books.”
What works?
I still don’t know, but I have sold over 500 books. Yay?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy that that many people have taken a chance on a new author, seeing that there’s a million new books out there each year.
Yikes.

Weird Wednesday: Magnetic Movement

Did you know that Earth’s Magnetic poles move?
I learned that as a teenager as I flipped through the World Book Encyclopedia volume N. And then I forgot about it for a while since I wasn’t using my compass for navigation as much.
When was the last time I used a compass? Probably around 2010 during an orienteering race where runners navigate using a topographical map and compass to a number of checkpoints before crossing the finish line. These races are usually held in parks and forested areas.
Now had I been in that same race in 1850, my compass bearings would be slightly different but negligible due to the small distances I would have been racing.
According to science, both magnetic poles travel an elliptical path and will eventually…well, that’s a closely guarded secret. Not really. They will return to approximate place of discovery.
Eventually.
Unless the North and South poles flip which last happened about 1 million years ago.
But that’s another story.
South magnetic pole:

Tuesday Top 10: Crazy Truths

I occasionally look at Trump’s Truth social posts because of a story I heard about a crazy thing he has said and I have to see it for myself, and it always turns out to be true.
So I was going to to do a Top Ten until I heard about this one that he “ReTruthed” (what the social platform calls a repost):

No, this is not a joke. The President of the United States reposted about former President Biden being killed and replaced by clones and robots.
With 10 million followers on his social platform, anything he posts is surely to be believed by many of those, so who knows what his endgame is.
I should have saved this for Weird Wednesday.

Monday Muse: Fires, Fiction, and Flin Flon

No, that last one isn’t a made-up word, but you have probably never heard of that city.
There are so many fires currently burning in Canada that American’s are complaining about all the smoke being blown south. It’s so bad that the president doesn’t want to annex us anymore.
17 000 people have been evacuated in Northern Manitoba due to fires like this:

5000 of those people come from the mining town of Flin Flon, Manitoba, named after a character in the science fiction book, The Sunless City written in 1905 by American author J. E. Preston Muddock.
In the story, Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin piloted a submarine into a bottomless lake where he sailed through a hole lined with gold to enter a strange underground world.
When a prospector discovered a rich deposit of copper in the area, he named it the Flin Flon mine. It’s a good think he hadn’t read The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter, otherwise it would have been called Tigg Wink, Manitoba.
What’s not fictional is how climate change has affected the forests in Canada and all over the world. We’ve had a dry spring with almost no rain in a month. Add the low snow accumulation during the winter and the high winds and you have a recipe for disaster.
Some relief is in sight as rain is moving through the prairie provinces, but what we need is more consistent precipitation, which the farmers would appreciate as well.

Songs for a Sunday: Housewife
Do all indie bands sound the same? Some do, some don’t. All female indie bands do have a certain quality about them. The first (and only) song I heard from them was Work Song which I do find catchy. The others I found to see if they will be a favorite band of mine.
Spoiler alert: Nope.
Good, but I’ll stick with Work Song and I’m Spent.
Housewife (formerly Moscow Apartment) is the Canadian indie rock musical project of Brighid Fry based in Toronto. Its founding members are Brighid Fry (guitar, vocals; formerly of Kingdom of Birds) and Pascale Padilla (guitar, vocals), with a number of guest players joining them for live shows and recordings. Padilla left the band in late 2022.

Weekend Wrap-up May 31: E-I-AI-U

So much debate in reader and writer threads these days are centered around AI. When ChatGPT launched, there was a flurry of AI generated books being published on Amazon, but new rules have quashed those in the last few years.
A post going around shows a published book with the AI editing note still on the pages:
“I’ve [ChatGPT] rewritten the passage to align more with J. Bree’s style, which features more tension, gritty undertones, and raw emotional subtext beneath the supernatural elements,” reads what appears to be an editing note in chapter three of the fantasy author’s book. (J Bree is also an author of romance and fantasy novels.)
Could this be done without AI? Sure, you could read all of J. Bree’s books (more than 20) to learn the nuances of her writing style. But who has time for that?
I don’t have an issue with someone asking an AI program to give tips on how to write like someone else, but the passage was rewritten by AI and not the author themselves, so they didn’t write it.
Do I use AI? I’ll admit that I have never used ChatGPT. I think I visited the site when it first came out to see what all the fuss was about, but didn’t want to sign up for anything. Are programs like Grammerly or ProWritingAid AI or just a tool like Strunk and White’s Style guide without the page flipping?
Editing programs do suggest different wordings, but I have found 90-95% of them take my voice away. My editor’s suggestions enjoy a larger acceptance percentage, though.
I use AI mostly for ads and posts, because when I need a graphic that day, I’m not going to tender out the job to an artist and pay X amount for something that has a limited longevity. I’ve used publicly available graphics to design my book covers, and I pay for Canva which allows me to use their licensed content (and maybe some of those are AI generated).
AI is here to stay but I’m not going to ask it to write my book because that would be impossible. I don’t even know where my book is going at the moment.
Here’s a couple of interviews I wrote (Yes. I wrote them.) when the whole ChatGPT exploded onto the scene two years ago:
Free Book Friday March 3: In Conversation with ChatGPT
I had so much fun with the first one that I did a second:
