Middleworld Blog Tour
Over the last four years, authors Jon and Pamela Voelkel visited over twenty Maya sites across Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. They've canoed underground rivers, tracked howler monkeys in the jungle, taken a Maya cooking course, talked to contemporary Maya people and met with leading Maya archaeologists--all in order to provide a rip-roaring adventure for children and an accurate portrayal of an incredible civilization.
The first book in The Jaguar Stones trilogy, Middleworld, focuses on...

Book-a-Day Challenge Weeks Five, Six, and Seven
You can tell by the length between my blog posts that I have fallen into that period of summer break where time ceases to have any meaning. I have forgotten what day it is and the sound of my alarm clock. Our recent vacation to San Antonio cut into my reading time. Hours spent sightseeing left me little energy for reading at night. Although I read every plaque at the Alamo and the Guinness World Record Museum--much to my family's dismay-- I cannot count those as a book, can I? I finished 18 b...

Book-a-Day Challenge: Weeks Three and Four
Summertime and the livin' is easy. I love beginning my mornings with a good book or two and easing into my day. I read 24 books during weeks 3 and 4 of my Book-a-Day Challenge. You may notice that my reading has slowed down a bit from previous weeks. In addition to reading piles of books this summer, I am also writing one. Look for my new book, Forever Readers--co-authored with my friend, Susie Kelley-- early next summer. Ironic, that writing a book about fostering lifelong reading habits...

Book-a-Day Challenge: Week Two
In some ways, I am still waiting for summer to begin. Closing up my classroom, writing curriculum, and presenting staff development, I have only had about 4 days of summer break. Without papers to grade and lessons to plan, though, I managed to read another 16 books this week.
I shared my book-a-day summer reading challenge with teachers and librarians at the North Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts conference last week, along with embarrassing photos of my cascading to-read...

Book-a-Day Challenge: Week One
The Book-a-Day Challenge took off this week with many bloggers, teachers, librarians, and voracious readers setting reading challenges of their own. Whatever reading goal you set, enjoy yourself and celebrate your love of reading all summer long. My first week of summer reading includes an eclectic list of 20 books and a range of summer reading experiences: holding my granddaughter on my lap, curled up on the couch, or staying up late. I cannot wait to meet more great books next week!

How Do You Measure a Year of Reading?
The last day of school for my students was Friday. For our final activity, students tallied their book totals and drew colorful signs displaying how many books they read this year. I took class and individual photos to celebrate the children's reading accomplishments. My 92 sixth grade students read 5,240 books this year--an average of 57 books per reader. The children were amazed by how many books they read. But as I keep telling anyone who will listen, a number does not reveal the entire...
