Now that I'm working fulltime again, I take it easy and write when I can. I am learnt to be more patient and forgiving with myself, and not push myself to write when I don't feel like it. I think you should just go with what suits you, at your current stage of life. :)(less)

I think I've always seen myself as a writer, I've been writing short stories (and some have placed or were finalists in international writing competitions) since I was a teen, so for me, that aspect of my identity was never in question. I think people tend to see publishing a book and success as validation of your talent/skills, but I don't see it that way, everyone's journey is so so different, and paths to traditional publication also hugely depends on what you're putting out there (genres, trends etc) and even your background/identity, your goals as a writer etc. All this to say: external validation is great for an author, but I've always thought of myself as a writer since I first discovered I could make myself and others feel something with my words. Hope this helps! x(less)

October update / LAST blog post on GR

Ooh baby. Has it been a month plus since my last post? You know when I started this blog, which my developer linked to my website, I thought I'd be posting more regularly, but to be honest Goodreads (and this blog) has been neglected because it's not interactive with readers (which is fine, I need to delink this GR blog with my site), the format is pretty crap, and GR just lacks the immediacy of I Read more of this blog post »

"Great and thought provoking

I loved this book. The premise is certainly magical realism, but I think we'll all recognize a bit of ourselves in the two main characters. Very glad I got to read this!"

Lauren Ho answered Ophelia Simonitch's question: Lauren Ho
Yes absolutely, it's a coming-of-age romcom slow burn, but would benefit older children more. It's a Bank Street College of Educators Book of the Year 2025 pick, if that helps!

“Tears sprang, unbidden, to my beady, plebeian eyes. That so much beauty was possible in the heart of this stone-and-concrete city, that it should be owned by one person, while I paid almost half my salary and almost all my waking hours for not even a hundredth of this space—it hurt. How could this be what my life had become about?”
Lauren Ho, Last Tang Standing

“25 a.m. I now know all the types of intestinal worms you can get and how to get them. 12:27 a.m. How to get Genevieve to drink from muddy swamp water? How to ensure the swamp water sample contains eggs of flukes? 12:33 a.m. How to get water from a lake containing Guinea worm, surely the Lamborghini of parasitic worms?”

“Her parents hate that she isn’t married,” Collin told Dr. Joyce.

“That’s unfortunate,” Dr. Joyce said. She hastened to add, “I mean, it shouldn’t matter if you’re married or not. What matters is you love each other.”

“Oh, we don’t,” Lucie said. “We’re just friends.”
