📚 BOOK OF THE WEEK: DISSIDENTS 📚

Dissidents is my second published novel. It’s about an American teen who’s transplanted from the US to the Soviet Union in the late 1980’s, when his mother is appointed as the US ambassador there. I have always been fascinated by Russia, and Russian culture. When I wrote the book, I had never been there—although I did ask the publisher to send me. They just laughed and laughed.

Even so, I did exhaustive research to make the book authentic, including spending...

📚 BOOK OF THE WEEK: BRUISER 📚

I was never much into the Beat poets of the 50’s and 60’s but one thing about being a writer is that you’re always educating yourself. I was fascinated by this poetry movement. Here’s a little more about Allen Ginsberg, and the Beat poets (Warning Ginsberg was not about clean language! So if that offends you, move along, nothing to see here!):

📚 BOOK OF THE WEEK: BRUISER 📚

I love this link that Symone Powell found! The chapter titles of BRUISER are intended to be ironic vocabulary words. Let’s see how you do on this weird word vocab test! https://bzfd.it/34NqKPz

People With This Condition Literally Feel What Others Are Feeling

📚 BOOK OF THE WEEK: BRUISER 📚

“Mirror-Touch Synesthesia” is eerily similar to the power that Brewster has in BRUISER this week’s Book of the Week.

Many thanks to Symone Powell, who’s been gathering Book-of-the-week info to post!

📚 BOOK OF THE WEEK: BRUISER 📚

I wanted the verse sections of BRUISER to have an angry beatnik feel. To achieve that, I directly modeled Brewster’s first point-of-view section after the most famous angry beatnik poet’s most famous work: Allen Ginsberg’s “HOWL”

Here they are side by side – can you see how I mirrored it?
