(3.5) On audio! Well written, fairly compelling. I first encountered Kureishi on the Fashion Neurosis podcast, and thought he was a bit arrogant there; the same seems to hold up here. Maybe the arrogance is earned, though!

If I had read this at a different time in my life, this would be a very different rating!
The writing is beautiful. There are moments and images (fig tree, hello) that have earned their legendary status. It’s a little compelling.

So amazed. Some of the passages I just had to sit with my mouth open — Lena’s big one will stick with me for a while.

I wasn’t absolutely loving it at first, but I think that

“When I was a little girl I used to read fairy tales. In fairy tales you meet Prince Charming and he's everything you ever wanted. In fairy tales the bad guy is very easy to spot. The bad guy is always wearing a black cape so you always know who he is. Then you grow up and you realize that Prince Charming is not as easy to find as you thought. You realize the bad guy is not wearing a black cape and he's not easy to spot; he's really funny, and he makes you laugh, and he has perfect hair.”

“You could rattle the stars," she whispered. "You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”

“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.”
