#BookReview & Prize GIVEAWAY The Gin Lover’s Guide to Dating @NinaKayeAuthor

I love books which not only contain a good story but also carry some valuable life lessons.

This book surprised me. It wasn’t what I expected at all. I knew I would get a funny romance with a gin theme, but I didn’t think I would get an uplifting story of reinvention, self discovery and an inspirational character as well.

By the end of it I actually found myself toasting Nina Kaye and her character Liv.

During these strange times some of us are trying to reinvent ourselves and are battling through inner turmoil. WE NEED FUNNY MOTIVATIONAL BOOKS LIKE THIS! Books like this one are beacons of light for us readers!

When life gives you lemons… add a splash of gin

Two parts sparkling comedy. One dose of romantic tension. Mix well with a second chance, a splash of mystery, and garnish with a twist of fate…

When Liv’s high-flying career goes off the rails, she finds herself working at a glitzy new gin bar to pay the bills. Yes, she’s got a knack for reading the customers, she’s finally got time to have some fun, and she might have just found some real friends – but it’s just until she gets her life back on track, right?

But between humiliating encounters with her old workmates, one very hot bartender, and a lot of soul searching to do, Liv’s life is even more muddled than a Blackberry Bramble…

Can Liv face up to her past, seize her future, and mix her own recipe for happiness?

A hilarious, feel-good romantic comedy for fans of Mhairi McFarlane and Sophie Ranald

 Here’s my review:

If you have ever had to reinvent yourself after your life has imploded then you will warm to the character of Liv. She loved her flash job in the corporate world but when that is suddenly taken away from her in a cruel restructure she soon finds herself inner turmoil. Fair play to Nina Kaye who writes a realistic character who goes through many different stages; denial, anger, sadness and finally acceptance. In some books characters do get up on their feet a little too quick but not Liv. At times it is heartbreaking especially when all those job rejections are coming in and she has bills to pay. I think Liv is a great character who goes through hell but with the help of her friends manages to get back on her feet.

I loved her friendships with old friend Dylan and new friend Reyes. Dylan tells Liv a few home truths like any good friend would. Let’s just say this – we could all do with a Dylan in our lives when life goes on the slide. Reyes is like a breath of fresh air for Liv and at times I wanted to hug her.

On the romance front Nina keeps us on our toes and I wasn’t sure who was going win Liv’s heart. I won’t give the game away and say whether my romantic dreams came true.

The gin theme is cleverly weaved in throughout and as I am a gin lover I warmed to this a lot.

My favourite part of this book is chapter 15 because Liv takes her first brave step forward and she does it while chanting, ‘the only true barrier is myself’ – this chapter gave me tingles! I was so proud of Liv and I was right behind her.

Nina Kaye – thank you for inspiring me ❤

#BookReview That Night in Paris #romance @sandybarker

I loved Sandy’s first book, One Summer in Santorini and I didn’t think she’d beat that in terms of reader enjoyment but…I was wrong. Oh my goodness – That Night in Paris is now my favourite (sorry Sandy x).

On this blog I like to create new lingo so I think the phrase – ‘I’m going to do a Cat Parsons’ – should be what we say when we want to run away from the problems in our life and go wild. Cat Parsons is our inspirational figure as she went on a fabulous holiday, made some new friends along the way, drank beautiful wine, ate wonderful food, laughed a lot and had a spot of romance in a gorgeous destination.

This is how I see this new exciting phrase being used (post lockdown obviously):

Friend 1: ‘what are you doing this weekend?’

Friend 2: ‘Well, I need to get away from my life right now so I’m going to…do a Cat Parsons.’

Friend 1: *Gasp* ‘Nooooooooo! You’re going to do a Cat Parsons?”

Friend 2: *Nodding* ‘Yes, I think everyone should do a Cat Parsons in their life.’

Friend 1: ‘Gosh I’m so envious.’

Friend 2: ‘I know you are!’ *Squeal*

Here’s the blurb

Note to self: don’t sleep with your flatmate after a curry and three bottles of wine… especially if he’s secretly in love with you and wants you to meet his mum.

Cat Parsons is on the run. She doesn’t do relationships. After ten years of singlehood even the hint of the ‘L’ word is enough to get Cat packing her bags and booking herself onto a two-week holiday.

A European bus tour feels like a stroke of genius to dodge awkward conversations at home. But little does Cat realise that the first stop will be Paris, the city of love itself.

Joined by new friends, Cat has got two weeks, eight countries and a hell of a lot of wine ahead of her. As they discover hidden treasures and the camaraderie of life on the road, will Cat find a new way of looking at love?

Discover the beauty of Europe’s most romantic cities in this uplifting and laugh-out-loud novel for fans of Samantha Parks, Alex Brown and Mandy Baggot.

Here’s my review:

I thought the romance and travel plots were great but for me the standout was the way this book brings to life Cat’s relationship with her new friends on the coach trip. Sandy writes female friendships really well and I loved how each bus bestie had a backstory and a reason for taking this life changing coach journey; Lou and her divorce, Jaelee and the love for her best friend who had just got married and Danielle whose best friend did not invite her to her wedding. I loved the bond these women forged, how they didn’t try to put each other down and how they were like a rock for each other. I also loved Mama Lou‘s hugs What took this book to the next level was that each of these women learnt something about themselves during this coach trip. It wasn’t just Cat who had a life changing experience.

The surprise meeting with friend from childhood Jean-Luc, who was an exchange student and stayed with her family in Australia, was brilliant. He’s grown into a really gorgeous man and YES I had feelings for him. At one point I wanted to move Cat out of the way and ask whether he fancied spending a fictional night in Paris with me instead.

The travel plot was fabulous and it does make you want to go see some of these places. Sandy weaves in so much detail with each place her characters visit and at times you do wonder whether Sandy should host a TV travel show.

This book was brilliant escapism!

Have you ever done a Cat Parsons?

How to Dress Like a Writer – 5 Key Writer Looks. #WritersLife

This is the perfect activity for lockdown. If you’ve ever dreamed about becoming a writer and want to master that writer look or you might be a fully fledged writer but don’t feel you are owning that creative look, read on.

Here are 5 key looks for writers which could be easily created during lockdown:

Writer At Work Look.  This look is quite popular. You can achieve this look by wearing pyjamas / track suit bottoms & t-shirt / baggy cardigan / loose-fitting trousers and slippers or fluffy slipper boots. Upgrade this look by placing a pair of reading glasses on your head, a pair hung around your neck and a pair shoved in the pocket of your cardigan. Some of us writers are always misplacing our reading glasses and asking loves ones where they might be.
The Tweed Writer Look. This look is all about letting the world know that you are a writer through the power of tweed. It screams creative person. I did some research for this post and when I asked people what they thought writers wear – tweed was their unprompted response. It’s time to dig deep at the back of your wardrobe and get out that old tweed suit. Wear it and see what you write. You never know where tweed might take you.
The Stereotypical Writer look. This look is all about tapping into those writer stereotypes from films and books. Make the most of this look by wearing a beret, a polo neck sweater and some corduroy slacks. Sip black coffee, have a lot of cats hanging around you and look intense whilst scribbling in a leather bound notebook.
The Geeky Writer look. This is all about tapping into that writer geek stereotype. You can achieve this look with some nerdy thick framed glasses, a bow tie, a tailored jacket and some loafers. Make the most of this look by having a pencil tucked behind your ear.
The j ust be yourself and wear whatever feels right look. Writing is hard enough. Wear whatever makes you feel good and creative. If that means wearing your favourite old t-shirt which makes you feel great or your bold flowery dress which makes you feel wonderful – do it! If you write better in PJs than wear those or if you write thousands of words in a ballgown – chuck that on!

If there are any other writer looks out there please let me know!

Have a great day.

#BookReview & GIVEAWAY The Gift of Cockleberry Bay @nicolamay1 #TGOCB

I am so honoured to be part of this blog tour. This book series is FABULOUS. Book 1 made me tweet Nicola May like mad and book 2 made me miss my London tube station. I am so glad my friend once said to me, “have you read any of Nicola May’s books?”

It was Nicola May who inspired me to self publish my own novel so she has a special place in my little writing heart.

From the author of the #1 BESTSELLING The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay

All of our favourite characters from Cockleberry Bay are back in this final, heart warming story in the series. Including Hot, Rosa Smith’s adorable dachshund and his new-born puppies.

Now successfully running the Cockleberry Café and wishing to start a family herself, Rosa feels the time is right to let her inherited Corner Shop go. However, her benefactor left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.

Rosa is torn. How can she make such a huge decision? And will it be the right one? Once the news gets out and goes public, untrustworthy newcomers appear in the Bay . . . their motives uncertain. With the revelation of more secrets from Rosa’s family heritage, a new journey of unpredictable and life-changing events begins to unfold.

Here’s my review:

This book made me feel like I was coming home. I was back in Cockleberry Bay, the sun came out (in my back garden) and life felt good again.

Nicola May didn’t let me get settled for too long as there was high drama with a storm and a small child who needed saving.

This book has something for everyone; romance, humour and a mystery to work out.

Rosa is an excellent character; bubbly, cheeky and lively. Nicola May writes her so well Rosa almost climbs out of the pages.  I loved how this book was all about her making the big decision – who to pass the shop onto. As a reader with a vested interest in the Corner Shop I found myself also thinking about Rosa’s options and worrying about how things were going to turn out.

This book was a fantastic end to a wonderful trilogy and this is not the end as I’m going to read the series again soon.

The Gift of Cockleberry Bay concludes this phenomenally successful series in typically brisk and bolshy style and will delight the many thousands of Rosa’s fans

Author Bio:

Nicola May lives in the UK, five miles from the Queen’s castle in Windsor, with her black-and-white rescue cat, Stan. Her hobbies include watching films that involve a lot of swooning, crabbing in South Devon and devouring cream teas.

Her bestselling The Corner Shop in Cockleberry, the 1st book in the Cockleberry Bay series, went to #1 on Amazon and stayed there for an unprecedented 6 weeks.

She classes her novels as ‘chicklit with a kick,’ writing about love, life and friendships in a real, not fluffy kind of way. She likes burgers, mince pies, clocks, birds, bubble baths and facials – but is not so keen on aubergines.

Guest Post – Things To Consider When Writing Sex Scenes in Romance Novels by @Lucy_K_Author

I have such a treat for all you romance writers!

Author Lucy Keeling is here to talk to us about writing naughty scenes in romance novels. I have to say I avoided them in my novel, Instructions For Falling In Love Again, because all my saucy scenes had the cringe factor. After writing one I would find myself hiding under my dressing table.

One day I hope to overcome this hurdle so I am going to see what Lucy Keeling has to say…

Hi there,

I’m Lucy Keeling and my debut novel Make It Up To You’ has had many lovely reviews, many more than I ever dreamed, but one thing that keeps being discussed is the, ahem, …saucier aspects of the novel.

If the rumours, tweets and texts from friends boyfriends* are to believed, then apparently I can write good sex. (*yes seriously, and no I don’t think I can look at them again)

And so whilst I never thought for one minute that I would be writing a blog post on this topic here I am with the five things I think will help you write good sex.

1. In the mood?

I suppose the seasoned professionals that write sex day in day out can just put pen to paper and go for it. I’m not saying that I need candles, a glass of wine, a quick neck massage and then I’m good to write the steamy stuff. It’s just if I’m trying to get the kids ready for school, if I know I need to deep clean my oven, if my car insurance is due, you know what, suddenly I’m not in the mood. I need a quiet space, a space that’s not likely to be interrupted, and yes, you know what a glass of wine sometimes helps. So think about what’s going to help you write the steamier bits and what’s not, and try to get yourself in the mood… to write.

2. What words can I use?

Ohhh, ok so you’re in the mood to write something a little steamier, but you’re looking at your screen and suddenly it feels like you’re writing a scientific journal of anatomical references. Or maybe, in order to avoid being crude, your work is instead a bit too flowery? Hmmm. For me this is honestly one of the hardest parts, as it were. You’ll have your own words for things that make you cringe, and if that’s the case do not use them. If you’re making yourself cringe you’re going to struggle to continue. It goes back to step one, being in the mood. So, if you don’t like the word Moist don’t use it. I, for one, am not a fan of mounds. To each their own.

The biggest piece of advice I can give you here is to study your contemporaries. Are there words that they don’t use, words that they do. If you know the market your aiming for then write in that tone.

3. It’s all very… textbook

Hmmm ok, assuming that you want your reader to stay with you here, I recommend going back and making sure that you’ve covered all of the senses. ALL OF THEM. What does he smell like… what does she taste like… what does it sound like when he… what does it look like when she… what does it feel like when they… you get it right?

But please make sure that what you’re writing is physically possible. I won’t go into too much detail (the original 18+ blog post can be read on my website lucykeeling.com) but look out for clothes magically disappearing, and an excess of arms etc. For brilliant examples of senses and sex scenes you can read pretty much anything by Talia Hibbert, Alisha Rai and Rachael Stewart.

4. Do I need to write sexy times?

No of course not. A heck of a lot of really good romance books are ‘closed door’. But will a sex scene show a personality insight that would otherwise be hard to get at? Will it move the story along? Will it add another layer, an additional conflict, or resolution? Then yes you might want to think about including it, especially if you’re not going to get these aspects in any other part of your story. Gorgeous stories that don’t include and don’t need to include sex can be found by Kiley Dunbar, Maxine Morrey and our very own Lucy Mitchell.

5. Consent & Contraception

If you write sex and it’s non-consensual then guess what? I’m not finishing that book. Sex has to be consented to. Simple as. It can be done simply, it can be done sexily, I honestly don’t care how, but it needs to be explicit consent.

On that note can we also talk contraception. If you fail to include contraception in your story, I’m thinking one thing and one thing only. The one with the uterus is getting pregnant, or a sexually transmitted disease. If you think writing Historical Romance gets you out of writing either consent or contraception think again. And if you need examples please see, Tessa Dare, Courtney Milan or Virginia Heath.

So, there you have it, off you go and write all the steaminess your heart desires.

Good luck with the words,

Lucy K x

A Train From Penzance to Paris #BookReview @PaperDollWrites

It has been a few weeks since I have done a book review. It has done me good to have a break so here I am – bright eyed and bushy tailed.

I was drawn to this book, A Train From Penzance to Paris,’ by its pretty cover. My book loving heart swelled at the sight of it. The other books in this series had received glowing reviews so I was keen to read this.

Here’s a lovely message from Laura Briggs, the author of this book.

Message from the author:

It’s the fifth installment in my series about amateur writer Maisie Clark, an American who, through a series of unusual circumstances, finds herself working as a chambermaid at a quirky hotel in Cornwall. Caught up in excitement, romance, and even a bit of danger now and then, Maisie is still determined to pursue her dreams of becoming a novelist, even if her new life in Cornwall has taken a few more twists and turns than she ever bargained for.

As its title reveals, A Train from Penzance to Paris finds Maisie whisked away from Cornish shores for a whirlwind tour of Paris. And even though her decision to leave one breathtaking location to visit another is about more than just a holiday away for Maisie, it will hopefully transport the reader on a mini vacation of sorts. Idyllic train rides, luxury hotels, chic restaurants, and even a glamorous party or two await the wide-eyed Maisie as she attempts to navigate the world of her favorite author turned would-be-mentor, Alistair Davies—who wasn’t quite as Maisie had always envisioned, as fans of the series already know!

Having been to Paris in real life, it was tremendous fun for me to weave in just a little bit of the color and excitement I remembered from my own trip into Maisie’s tourist experience. The historic landmarks, the one-of-a-kind window displays, and the incredible opera I attended will forever rank among my favorite travel memories. Of course, when one is writing about a place they are only slightly familiar with, I’m sure there are many, many mistakes that natives and more seasoned visitors of the City of Light will easily spot. But just as when I’m writing about Cornwall (where I have yet to set foot, sadly) I do hope that readers will recognize shades of the real Paris in Maisie’s experience and that it will transport them to somewhere exotic and exciting when they delve into its pages.

And Paris isn’t the only escapist location on Maisie’s itinerary, with London and its stately charms awaiting her for the last leg of her journey. With new challenges to face, friendships to forge, and opportunity glittering on the horizon will Maisie finally discover the key her dreams? Or will Cornwall call her back to its shores when a startling truth leaves her to question the reasons she embarked on this journey in the first place?

For those who haven’t read the books from A LITTLE HOTEL IN CORNWALL yet, I hope this will inspire you to give them a try. You can find the first five installments in the series available in eBook format and the sixth book currently on pre-order at Amazon.:

Here’s the blurb:

When Maisie accepts a celebrated author’s invitation to mentor her, she finds herself leaving Cornwall behind on train tracks bound for the glitter city of Paris. Instead of making beds and serving coffee at the Penmarrow hotel in Cornwall, she’s making notes on her manuscript while sitting in a French cafe, meeting famous writers at private dinner parties, and trying to ferret the secrets behind the author’s unfinished future novel. It’s glamorous, it’s breathtaking … but it’s also an ocean channel away from the place that she loves, and, more importantly, the person to whom she just recently confessed her deepest feelings. Separated from Sidney by distance and circumstances, Maisie fears that their connection will be lost despite her words to him – and maybe because of those words, and the ones she didn’t allow him to say in return.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of things in her new life trying to distract her – the professional editor hired to critique her novel, the eager young literary agent who sees pie-in-the-sky potential for Maisie’s talent, but Maisie finds solace in the eclectic group of amateur writers into whose midst she finds herself by accident. Their critique and advice is fast becoming as important as the editors – maybe even more important than the published author Maisie believed held the keys to refining her skill.

But it’s missing Sidney that fills Maisie’s thoughts the most, along with her life back in Port Hewer, and she can’t stop wondering whether his feelings are the same as her own. His unspoken answer has become one of the most important pieces of her life, even as she struggles to match the pace of her new life and keep her dreams in sight. And when she unwittingly becomes privy to a seeming literary conspiracy, she must decide what to do in light of its truth – and decide what’s most important in her quest to become a professional writer.

Join Maisie in a whirlwind tour across two of the world’s greatest cities, filled with questions, dreams, and a chance for fame that she believed far beyond her grasp, as she discovers herself as a writer, and how to embrace an unexpected future on her own terms.

Here’s my review:

Despite it being the fifth book in a series I found the book worked well as a standalone. I was able to slot myself into the story and Maisie’s shoes with ease.

I warmed to the character of Maisie early on. She’s an amateur writer trying to get a book deal and gets the amazing opportunity to hang out with her favourite author on a dream mentoring trip to Paris. This is one of my own life fantasises so I got to live this situation out through Maisie’s eyes. Maisie’s passion for her writing and following her ambitions really shines through. I do love characters who decide to follow their dreams.

I can see why this series has been popular and so well received. Laura Briggs fills her books with interesting and engaging characters, memorable settings and good plot twists.

The letters to Sidney, her love interest, were good and heartfelt. I think I need to go back and read the previous books to get up to speed with Sidney.

Loved the secret society, the hustle & bustle of Paris and mingling with authors.

A charming and captivating read!
