Essential Skills For Bookish Friends

Bookish friends are special people ❤

As a bookish person myself I think finding people who are mad about books is one of life’s many pleasures.

Here are the essential skills that I believe are required for bookish friends.

They must agree with you that happiness comes from reading books and talking about them.
Romance bookish friends – must be able to pause to appreciate a beautifully crafted love scene.
Crime / thriller bookish friends – must be able to pause to appreciate a well crafted believable murder / crime.
They have a book reading list as long as yours or even better twice the size of yours. We all love friends who inspire us to do more!
They must excel at tweeting or posting thought provoking GIFs about the plot or characters of a much loved book.
They must spend their life in the gap between the real world and the fictional world.
They must be able to send supportive and reassuring words when they know you are feeling sad after the death of a much loved book character.
They must savour the idea of having a ‘bookish lunch’ where you both talk about the books you are reading, the books you want to read and the books you are looking forward to reading when they come out. You both agree this type of lunch would last a few hours, drinking a glass of wine or two would be optional but book humour would be guaranteed.
They must be able to share your pain of having to work before you can return to reading that great book.
They must enjoy tweeting the life out of great book quotes.
They must be fluent in bookish speak and must be able to talk books for hours and hours and hours…
They must go quiet on social media when they are engrossed in a good book.
They must excel at snooping the social media feeds of authors to find snippets of gossip as to when their next book is coming out.
They must appreciate the beautiful sight of a stack of new books.
Romance bookish friends – must be able to express their strong feelings for an attractive male character in a series of emojis.
Crime bookish friends – must be able to express their appreciation of a bone chilling plot twist via a series of emojis.

A big shout out to all the bookish people out there!

#BookReview Midwife Crisis #Books #Pregnancy #RomCom @LizDaviesAuthor

Don’t you just love a book which takes you back to a time in your own life and brings a knowing smile to your face as you read it?

Well, this book, Midwife Crisis, by Liz Davies, transported me back to when I first became pregnant and was trying to climb the career ranks. I saw myself in Cynthia and her journey through pregnancy and into motherhood was very realistic and funny. I spent the entire book nodding at Cynthia’s battle against the sore boobs, the bouts of nausea, the tiredness, feeling like a large animal foraging for food the entire time, futile attempts to hide the bump, the lure of baby clothing shopping and going through the joy and pain of labour

Alongside all this is the desire to keep working at the same pace you were at before you got pregnant and the worry about what will happen to your career. Yes – I’ve been there and got the t-shirt!

On top of all this Cynthia has to come to terms with the fact that this baby was the result of a one night stand, she might be bringing up the baby on her own and those strong feelings for new work colleague Max.

It is safe to say that I was glued to this book!

Here’s the blurb:

Midlife crisis? What midlife crisis?

At forty-four, Cynthia Smart is exactly where she wants to be. Almost.

In a couple of years, she’ll be the CEO of the company she’s spent most of her adult life working in. For now, though, she’s still busy shimmying up the greasy pole of corporate business. She’s single, carefree, and independent, and nothing can stop her getting what she wants and deserves.

Until she discovers she’s pregnant.

Determined to have her cake and eat it, she’s convinced that having a baby will make little difference to her life, and that she will be one of those women who can hold down an incredibly demanding job and also be a perfect mother.

But as her pregnancy progresses and her life slowly falls apart, she has the sneaking suspicion that Max Oakland, the new guy on the block, is out to steal her dream job. That she’s terribly attracted to him doesn’t help, nor does the fact that he’s devilishly handsome, appears to be a really nice fella, and is good in a crisis.

When she gradually comes to realise that something has got to give, what she doesn’t want it to be is her heart.

Here’s my review:

I loved the change in Cynthia brought on by pregnancy and her growing feelings for Max. She’s a funny character and Liz Davies did a good job in bringing her to life.

The humour is very good in this book. It did bring a much needed smile to my face after a long day at work.

Max is a fabulous character and he was a real surprise to me. He wasn’t what I was expecting at all and this was refreshing, He went against all the male office worker stereotypes and this made his romance with Cynthia more emotional for me.

There was a good cast of supporting characters too, Cynthia’s mother caught my eye in particular.

This was a really enjoyable book filled with heartwarming moments, a good sprinkling of comedy and a lot of sweet romance.

About Liz Davies

Liz Davies writes feel-good, light-hearted stories with a hefty dose of romance, a smattering of humour, and a great deal of love.

She’s married to her best friend, has one grown-up daughter, and when she isn’t scribbling away in the notepad she carries with her everywhere (just in case inspiration strikes), you’ll find her searching for that perfect pair of shoes. She loves to cook but isn’t very good at it, and loves to eat – she’s much better at that! Liz also enjoys walking (preferably on the flat), cycling (also on the flat), and lots of sitting around in the garden on warm, sunny days.

She currently lives with her family in Wales, but would ideally love to buy a camper van and travel the world in it.

#BookReview You May Kiss The Bridesmaid

Ring the fictional romantic crush bell for me someone please!

Archie, the male character in this book, You May Kiss The Bridesmaid, by Camilla Isley, has caught my attention with his cheekiness, his beard, his bedside manner, his foot massages and his interest in yoga. I now can’t stop replacing Summer Knowles, the female character, with myself in my head. This is an occupational hazard for romance book bloggers like myself. Crushes on fictional characters can take days to recover from.

Archibald Hill – what have you done to me? As a forty something, married, mother of teenagers, I shouldn’t be sat out in my garden daydreaming about you giving me one of your foot massages! Jeez – I didn’t even like foot massages until you came along.

Can someone also pass me my handheld electric fan?

Here’s the blurb:

Archibald Hill is handsome, single, and he’s going to his best friend’s wedding ready to make a conquest or two. After all, everyone knows weddings are the perfect setting to get lucky.

Summer Knowles used to have a life—friends, family, a sister who’d do anything for her—until she blew it all away with a terrible mistake. Now, attending her twin’s wedding as the party’s undesirable number one seems like more than she can handle. So, when a tall stranger with smoldering ice-blue eyes offers her a therapy of seven nights of no-strings-attached fun, she might even ignore that he has a beard and accept.

Problem is, Summer has never been good at keeping sex and feelings separated…

Here’s my review:

VERY enjoyable read!

This is the sixth book in the series. I haven’t read any of the other books as I like to throw myself into series to see whether they can be read standalone. I can confirm this book can definitely be read on its own.

I love the set up for this book; a one WEEK Napa wedding filled with wine tastings, rehearsal dinners and yoga practices.

Summer Knowles is my kind of gal; good at giving banter, flawed and she can’t keep away from Archie. She has a past which she’s not proud about and she’s very relatable.

Archie is my kind of fictional love interest: handsome, cheeky and quite frankly irresistible.

Then you have this pact they make – a week long arrangement of no strings attached hanky panky.

Oh my days – this book gave me the flutters and made me read it with a cooling flannel draped over my forehead,

I thought it was a great read and Camilla Isley – you are a romantic comedy author goddess.
