Five by Ilona Bannister
"The premise of this novel is that five strangers meet at a train station and one of them will die. The author has let the reader in on the secret that one of the passengers will meet an ugly end, but doesn't reveal who is it. In fact, the author taun" Read more of this review »
Five by Ilona Bannister
"My favorite line in the whole book!! “Fear has a sound. It is hard to recognize because we only hear it once or twice in our lives.” I enjoyed the book from the very beginning. It’s an easy read but keeps you on your toes at the same time."

Five by Ilona Bannister
"This book took a lot of risks and in my opinion they paid off. The biggest two were the use of second person point of view, and, therefore, breaking the third wall. Some people may not be able to get past that, but it works and it enhances the story…" Read more of this review »

“They don't know that birth and life and death are just chance. Who gets what has nothing to do with us.”
Ilona Bannister, When I Ran Away

“Mable said they are going to lock us all in. Prisoners in our homes. But that is why I must learn to get out. When I lock myself in, that is one thing. When someone else holds the keys, well, that occupies a different rank on the hierarchy of fear".”
Ilona Bannister, Little Prisons

“I was angry that Harry wasn't a woman.

That's still the problem. He hasn't been trained since before he could speak to intuit the needs of others. He hasn't been shown how to push against the pulsing muscle of his heart to make room for everyone who needs a space in it. When he does try I say his attempts are inadequate. I don't accept his limitations. But he doesn't admit he has them. He doesn't do what I would do. He doesn't apologize for his presence, take up as little room as possible. Every time he pretends to step up but doesn't and every time I'm disappointed. But neither of us explains and neither of us changes.

We used to say thank you and please. We used to try to be what the other one needed and wanted. I thought we were special. I thought we wouldn't take each other for granted...”
