Caption This!
Below is a picture of my brother, in his early twenties, during his post-college, backpacking-through-Europe period. This is from his visit with the trolls in Norway. He’s back there now…hence how this picture was dug up.
Seemed ripe for a caption! Will be sending a book to the winning-est wit! Check back next Friday to see if you won!

Coffee, please, with a dollop of inspiration
This story on ABC World News touched me, for lots of reasons.
Even at 102 years of age, in hospice with a failing heart, this grandmother was so interested in her granddaughter’s life that she inspired this awesome moment.
And her granddaughter treasured their connection. She kept using the word “strong” for her grandmother. That grandmother is the kind of Mimi I hope to be to my growing brood.

Erin Bartels enchanted readers with her expertly crafted debut novel, We Hope for Better Things. Now Bartels pens another thoughtful and lyrical tale in The Words between Us, which offers two distinct and yet parallel narratives that explore all aspects of life: family, loss, young love, coming-of-age, betrayal, regret, and forgiveness. Bartels pairs these themes with a celebration of the written word and shows that words have more power than we could ever imagine.
Reclusive bookstore owner Robin Windsor has been hiding under an assumed name to avoid association with her family’s past—one filled with corruption, extortion, and even murder. She thought she’d finally found sanctuary in a struggling used bookstore, but her past is quickly catching up with her. When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who betrayed her trust and ruined everything. The first book, The Catcher in the Rye, is soon followed by the other books she shared with Peter nearly twenty years ago, with one arriving in the mail each day. These books leave her with more questions than answers and infuse her with a sinking feeling that she’s about to be exposed all over again.
With evocative prose that recalls the classic novels we love, Erin Bartels fashions a story that shows that words—the ones we say, the ones we read, and the ones we write—can help us form our own identity and assist us in finding our way again.

What is a Bible verse that inspires you to keep on writing?
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
and
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’” Genesis 1:26
Our God is first described in Scripture as a creator, and we most clearly image him when we create. An excellent book on the subject is Dorothy Sayers’ The Mind of the Maker. Reading that book helped me value my writing in a way I hadn’t before.
Describe the moment that you knew you were born to write.
Much like I couldn’t tell you the “day I was saved” because I was brought up in the church and don’t remember a time when I didn’t believe, I was brought up in books and don’t remember a time when I didn’t know they would be an important part of my entire life. I think I’ve always been a writer.
Visual arts, like painting and photography, are my escape from writing because they make me feel more spontaneous than meticulous.
What’s your strategy for coping with bad reviews?
Remembering that my book is not for everyone—and that’s just fine. There are plenty of readers out there and plenty of books for everyone.
If for some reason you couldn’t write anymore, what would you do with your gift of communication?
I think I would have made a good lawyer.
Describe your best writing moment.
The first time I actually wrote The End on a novel-length piece was one of my best writing moments because it was proving that I could finish something after years of false starts.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
When you take a hit, breathe out slowly and silently count to ten before crying. Most of the time, you’ll find you don’t need to cry at all. And when you get knocked down, get back up again. I think my father told me these things to cope with getting hurt in sports, but it works with much of life. Breathe and count to ten before reacting. You can handle more than you think you can. Never let them see they get to you. When you practice that attitude, eventually very little gets to you anyway. You become imperturbable and unoffendable. We could use a little more of that in our outrage-saturated world.

What is a Bible verse that inspires you to keep on writing?
Philippians 3:12 – Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
This verse has really become something I have clung to since I came to the decision that writing was more than a hobby or even vocation, but truly my ministry.
When I see it that way, I want to always strive to make the next book better. To make sure I am faithful to write all the stories God has laid on my heart. To be the best writer I can be working as if for God and not for man.
Describe the moment that you knew you were born to write.
Very early on as I was typing out my first story, an excitement and peace came every time I wrote. But I didn’t really have the confidence to pursue it. I was terrible at English in school and felt greatly under-qualified. Then I was going through the Book of Esther with my church. I felt so convicted by the words of Mordecai to Esther in 4:14, “If you remain silent at this time deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place.” I really felt as if God was saying, “I have given you a calling and I have stories for you to write. But if you refuse, I will choose someone else.”
What’s your strategy for coping with bad reviews?
Until recently I didn’t have a strategy, and the first bad review I read was a bit of bump. However, after time in prayer and council of friends, I come to a few conclusions. This is not the best book I will ever write. I hope that each one will be better and that every book will show growth in my writing. But, at the same time, it is the best I could write this book. I put all I had into this book and gave it my best effort. I have to be okay the fact that it will connect with some and not connect with others. I have had to trust God with the whole publishing journey and bad reviews are just a part of that journey.
If for some reason you couldn’t write anymore, what would you do with your gift of communication?
I love to teach and share my joy of what God is doing and has done in my life. I have had the privilege of speaking at a few retreats and events and I really value any opportunity to share about my faith in such a way.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
To strive to make every book better than the last. I was a member of My Book Therapy for years before I joined the staff and this idea is repeated over and over by Susan May Warren, Rachel Hauck, and Beth Vogt. I always want to challenge myself and to grow as a writer. I am not foolish to believe that because I received a contract that I have “arrived.” I am simply stepping into the world. And as all artists strive to better their skill, I always want to strive to be a better writer.

With over 500,000 copies sold, Lisa Harris has become a master at writing nail-biting thrillers that pair with just the right amount of romance. In Harris’s newest novel, Deadly Intentions, a research scientist on the run for her life persuades Detective Josh Solomon to revisit his most personal case—his wife’s death.
Caitlyn Lindsey has worked as a research scientist for almost a decade, but she is convinced that someone is assassinating her team one by one. First, a friend and research partner was killed in a home invasion. Three months ago, her boss died in a suspicious car accident. Four days ago, another partner supposedly committed suicide. When she miraculously survives a deadly hit-and-run, Caitlyn turns to one of the victim’s husbands, Detective Josh Solomon.
Though initially skeptical about Caitlyn’s theory, it doesn’t take long for Josh to realize that the attack that took his wife’s life was far from random. But before he can decipher the truth—along with his growing feelings for Caitlyn—he must discover who is after Caitlyn’s team—and what their end game is—before it’s too late.
Summer Memories
For much of my childhood, I was raised by a single mom, which meant summer vacations were a rarity. But for me, that was fine. Because when I think about summer memories, one thing comes to mind. Reading. You see, I was always the girl with a book in my hand. If I wasn’t in school, doing homework, or chores, I was reading. I devoured Nancy Drew Mysteries, the Little House on the Prairie series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and A Wrinkle in Time. Later on, my obsession turned to gothic mysteries, and I read every Victoria Holt book I could get my hands on.
Weekly trips to the library were a given throughout the summer. I’d spend hours, content just to browse the shelves, always leaving with a thick stack of books in my hands. My mother still reminds me to this day that during those long summer breaks, if she couldn’t find me, she knew I’d be reading up in the tree next to our house, escaping once again into the pages of another good book.

Joanna Davidson Politano has a gift for blending historical romance with just the right amount of intrigue and mystery and has captivated readers with her award-winning books Lady Jayne Disappears and A Rumored Fortune. Now she sweeps readers away to Victorian England in her latest novel, Finding Lady Enderly.
Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London’s East End who longs for a better life. When she meets a handsome stranger, she is intrigued by his offer. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her—one that will take her away from her harsh life, offer her adventure, and even give her a chance to become a lady. Raina’s dreams are finally coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares.
Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling. As she wrestles with her true identity, the ruin, decay, and secrets she finds at the heart of the old mansion tear at her confidence and threaten to reveal her for who she really is. Only one man stands between her and the danger that lurks within—and only if he decides to keep her biggest secret hidden. Can she uncover her own secrets and the secrets of the Abbey before they ruin her life?
Summer Memories
Most summers as a young kid were a chance to read Nancy Drew in a tree without the daily interruption of school, and I often finished a book a day. The summer memory that still echoes into present day, however, is the year I first went to a week-long camp in Wisconsin. We pranked one of the boys’ cabins by putting a goat on their front porch (who ate through a screen and most of their shoes—oops!) and they got us back with frogs in the bathroom. We then emptied their suitcases and hid their clothes, so they did something with toothpaste that I don’t remember, but I remember cleaning up a huge mess!
Pranks aside, this was the summer God blew me away. The leaders taught parts of the Bible I’d never heard before—they went beyond Noah and Moses and the typical “stories” from Sunday school since it was an all-ages camp, and I was floored. That was actually in the Bible? I really wrestled with the God of the Old Testament and the miracles in the New. They had us mail ourselves a letter with whatever commitment we made that week, and I still have mine—it said something about finding out what was actually in the Bible. I went home and asked for my own, and I gradually read that thing cover to cover. That verse about the scales coming away describes what happened over that next year or so of reading, and I graduated from Nancy Drew to the age-old living words of Scripture, and I developed such a hunger for it. That summer is long past by two or three decades, but its impact still resonates with me now.

Summer Memories
While I despise summer as an adult…ahem (seriously, I live in the south and can’t stand the heat these days)…my favorite childhood memory is definitely the lake. My family and a friend’s family had places that were super close to each other and it was so much fun. For several weeks out of the summer, we would stay at our lake house while my dad commuted back and forth to work. On the weekends and the days he took off, we’d be on the water. My dad had a speedboat and we’d ski, or go tubing and just spend some really lazy days in the water or lounging on the dock. Or sleeping in the hammock. There were also mosquitoes and fourth of July firecrackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and catching lightning bugs when the sun went down.
Speaking of the fourth of July—it was the biggest celebration around the lake. My dad’s best friend would buy firecrackers in bulk. When it got dark enough, we’d go out to the dock and he’d set them off in a Disney World show worthy display while eating s’mores, moon pies, and drinking RC Cola. (I guess I’m dating myself there!) Looking back on my childhood and teenage years, I realize now how amazing those years actually were. By the time I reached college age, my dad had sold the boat and the lake house because life had gotten too busy to really justify keeping it.
But, oh, the memories! It was a fabulous way to spend the summer.

Christy Award finalist Liz Johnson has become well known as a contemporary romance author. She has written nearly a dozen novels, including the bestselling Christy Award finalist The Red Door Inn. In A Glitter of Gold, book 2 in the Georgia Coast Romance series, Johnson transports readers to the Deep South to tell the tale of partners hunting for a shipwreck who must trust each other—and themselves—to find the fortune they both desperately need.
Hoping to escape her shameful past, Anne Norris moves to Savannah, Georgia. She immerses herself in her pirate-tour venture, but business is waning. When she discovers evidence of a shipwreck off the coast of Tybee Island, she knows the treasure could save her business. She takes her findings to local museum director Carter Hale for confirmation. But she leaves after a disastrous first meeting, afraid that he will bring media and mayhem into her life and make public a past that she would rather keep hidden.
Carter believes Anne’s discovery could be the key to uncovering a shipwreck described in an eighteenth-century diary that’s been in his family for generations. Finding the shipwreck would open up new career opportunities for him. But convincing Anne to help him solve the 250-year-old mystery of Savannah’s past isn’t easy.
It will take everything they have—and every secret they’ve tried to hide—in order to find the lost ship, uncover the truth, save their reputations, and discover the greatest treasure of all . . . love.
Summer Memories
When I was a kid, my aunt made a deal with my brother, sister, and I. The summer after we each turned ten years old, we could visit her in Colorado and spend a whole week doing whatever we wanted. I spent two summers hearing about the adventures my brother and sister had, but as the youngest, I had to wait. It wasn’t easy, but somehow it made it sweeter when my turn finally arrived. No parents. No annoying older siblings. Just me and my aunt and uncle.
That week we went whitewater rafting, something I didn’t know much about. But when my aunt suggested it, I thought it sounded fun—and it was! A few days later, my aunt took me shopping. I think we went to Target, but I know I rocked the floral print jean shorts, matching blue shirt, and bright white sneakers we bought. I probably wore that outfit three times that week because it was the coolest outfit I’d ever owned. I’m sure I wore it to dinner at Casa Bonita—a Denver favorite, not for its food but its indoor cliff divers and neon glow sticks. What can I say? It was 1991.
We filled every day of that week with fun and adventure, but what I remember most about that trip was the way my aunt made me feel so special, so worthy of her time and attention. She’s still this way, still lavishing attention and care on me in ways that feed my soul. I’m so grateful for the way she invested in me and hope I can love on my nieces and nephews the same way. It’s true what Maya Angelou said: People will never forget how you made them feel.

Fordham revisits this hospitable town in her newest novel, Yours Truly, Thomas, which is sure to charm and delight anyone who loves historical fiction filled with memorable characters and tender romance.
For three years, Penny Ercanbeck has been opening other people’s mail. Still, she dreams of something more—a bit of intrigue, a taste of romance, or at least a touch less loneliness. Her suffocating life dramatically changes when she opens a series of letters from a heartbroken man to his true love. Penny is captivated by Thomas’s words and seizes the chance to make a difference. It becomes her mission to place this lost letter into the hands of its intended recipient.

Can two people hurt by loss and miles apart find one another through letters meant for someone else?
Summer Memories
I grew up in Washington State on a ten-acre piece of property that was mostly a tree-covered hill. Because of the number of trees on our land, it was impossible to see another house, creating the illusion of living in the middle of nowhere. The tomboy in me loved this and couldn’t get enough of being outside. One summer my little sister and I asked our parents if we could have the leftover garden seeds. Each year we planted a huge garden and hated working in it but the idea of having our own garden appealed to us.
To our great satisfaction, our parents agreed. We took our nearly empty bags of seeds and went into the woods looking for the perfect place to plant our secret garden. We crossed a stream, went over a couple small hills and past the Yedi Fort (a small fort my brother helped us build). We got far enough in the woods that we were not as familiar with the land, which only made it all the more thrilling. We knew plants needed sunlight to grow and finally, we found a meadow (that’s what we named it, but it was just a break in the trees). Pulling the deeply rooted wild grasses up was much harder than we anticipated but we kept at it. Visions of plump vegetables kept us going. Another problem we faced was proximity to water. We shrugged our little shoulders and decided if our pioneer ancestors could haul water so could we.
From then on, we came to our meadow whenever there was a lull in summer chores, and we worked on our secret garden. There were days when the heat and the work weren’t as fun as we wanted but for the most part, we were happy gardeners with big imaginations. We celebrated when our seeds sprouted, anxious to harvest the bounty they were sure to provide. We thought we’d be hauling buckets of vegetables back to our parents…we were wrong. Our seeds barely grew! We had a few small, limp carrots despite our hauling water to them. There were no beautiful rose bushes or hidden entrances like in the books we’d read but it was still magical. The weeds have overgrown any evidence that two little girls spent a summer playing in the clearing. The bounty, in its own way, was large. We were happy and carefree and those are good fruits!
