From the author's website:After studying History at Oxford University, I began my journalistic career on a newspaper in my home town of Louth, in Lincolnshire. I progressed onto a London newspaper, where I became women's editor. From there I moved to become a feature writer on Best magazine. After two years I was made editor of a regional arts and listings publication. This was followed by another two years as deputy editor on Heritage magazine. Motherhood meant a spell as a freelance, contributing to several national magazines, such as Country Homes & Interiors, Perfect Home and Woman's Journal, as well as newspapers such as The Times, The Telegraph and The Guardian. During this time I also worked as a literary publicist and for a document ...more

So glad you're enjoying the series so far. Yes, they're all based on real events and/or people. The books really ought to be read in order because of the sub plot that runs through them, but I always include a glossary in all of them to help fill in all the factual details if readers are interested in finding out more. The Anatomist's Apprentice is based on a real court case, The Dead Shall Not Rest featured the real life giant, Charles Byrne, who was pursued by a real life anatomist and The Devil's Breath features a real fog caused by a volcanic eruption that lead to many deaths in England. The Lazarus Curse centers around a real potion drug by some slaves that was supposed to wake people from the dead and Shadow of the Raven was inspired by the events of a real Oxfordshire village in the 18th century. Secrets in the Stones is out next year and features real English characters who lived in India. The methods of torture and execution used were just so extraordinary that I couldn't have made them up! I hope this answers your question.(less)

Setting the record straight

I'm a stickler for the author's mantra 'Never engage' with anyone who gives you a bad review, but when that review is libellous, I feel I have the right to defend myself. The offending review of my latest WW2 novel, The Light We Left Behind, accused me of 'possible plagiarism' on both Goodreads and Amazon. It has been reported several times on both sites, including by my publishers, but it still r Read more of this blog post »

Hi Don,
What timing! The Sixth Victim is being re-issued on Kindle next week, followed by The Angel Makers and A Deadly Deception in March. A new publisher is giving them a second outing and, if sales go well, I'm really hoping there will be more. Al See Full Answer

“ so this is my collection of human body parts, Dr. Silkston," he said proudly, walking into the storeroom. "each organ is here fro a reason, a purpose. you see this one," he said, pointing to a cylinder containing what appeared to Thomas to be a section of a small intestine with a hole in it. "'Tis a duelist's jejunum. that is the bullet hole, right through the middle. and this, this is the Marquis of Rockingham's heart," he announced proudly. " he gave me a permission to have it a fore he died”
