Four New Releases!!!
Yay! I'm so excited to announce that I've just released FOUR eBooks! (With print soon to follow.)
First, Discern, Katon University Book One! I'm really excited about this book. The feedback I've received on it has been really, really great. I used around 150 beta readers, five proofreaders, a few author friends, and my usual editor, and the responses were overwhelmingly positive. :-) You'll LOVE this book!
Discern, Katon University Book One
Download for $3.99: Kindle, Nook, Smashwords
Nicole Williams is an Arete—a fourth child with magical abilities—yet no matter how hard she tries, she can’t Channel her power. In fact, she seems to be the only student at Katon University who fails at magic.
That doesn't stop magic from finding her. It starts with possessed books and cursed spiders before moving quickly to freaky shadows and enchanted toys. Nicole turns to her best friend for help, along with fellow student Austin Young, who is considered by all a magical rarity. He also happens to be the hottest guy on campus and just might be interested in her.
Nicole soon finds herself competing to be included on a university-led expedition to Arches National Park. She is determined to show everyone, but mostly herself, that she does belong. Yet, to qualify for the trip, she must produce at least a speck of Wind magic, and that appears to be impossible.
As the competition progresses, Nicole wonders if she’s making the right choice—especially when she learns that the strange fossils they’ll be studying in Arches might not be as dead as everyone thinks.
What others have said about Discern so far:
"I LOVED it! It hooked me right from the start and I had a hard time putting it down. Why do kids think they should eat and have clean clothes anyway?"
"I loved the plot line and characters - it was definitely a page-turner!"
"I really liked the magic system. It's very creative, especially what happens when they overuse their powers. It was seriously cool."
"Wow! I honestly couldn't put it down, I loved it so much. I was angry when I had to go to work and stop reading."
From an author friend: "You absolutely have a winner! It was very compelling and a joy to read."
Many thanks to Glenn Pearson of Pearson Photography for taking the picture of the girl, and thanks to Emily for being the model! Thanks to James Curwen for sprucing up the background and for giving me feedback and pointers while putting the whole thing together.
ALSO released as part of the Katon University series! Or, actually, re-released. :-) These three novellas were published two years ago. When I realized I wanted to write full-length books, I unpublished them. I've gone through and fixed them to match Discern, and here they are. :-)

The Angel

When the goddess arrives in the form of a statue, the stillness of Lizzie's mountain retreat is destroyed.
What others have said:
"Oh, my gosh... I'm freaking myself out while reading a novella I wrote about a possessed statue that comes during bad weather. And it's raining and stormy outside right now. And the possessed statue is creeping up on my main character.
*Andrea puts head under blanket*"
Hey - I have an opinion too. :-)
If you've already read any of these stories, please help me out by posting an honest review! Getting a new series off the ground is pretty difficult, and without reviews, it's nearly impossible. Your comments don't need to be long. Just sincere, from the heart, and posted on Amazon, Nook, or Goodreads. All of them, if possible. :-)
I'm so super excited about this series. It's going to be a blast to write and a blast to read! I can't wait to start a new journey with my readers!

Mikey Brooks' Latest Release!

Welcome to The Stone of Valhalla Blog Tour!A middle-grade fantasy-adventure by Mikey Brooks.
Don’t forget to check out the GIVEAWAY at the bottom this postfor a chance to WIN a $25 Amazon Gift card and other great prizes!
Synopsis:
Aaron was chosen to save their world, but it might come at the cost of losing his own.
Breaking into an old lady’s basement was supposed to reward 13-year-old Aaron with new friends. Instead he finds an enchanted amulet that transports him to another world—one at war with magic. Before he knows it, he is accused of witchcraft and invited to a bonfire—where he’s the main attraction. If that’s not bad enough, a goblin army shows up and toasts the town...literally. The good news: Aaron escapes being charbroiled. The bad news: the goblins are after him. They want his amulet and will stop at nothing to get it. Battling to find his way home, Aaron teams up with a not-so-magical-wizard and learns it’s his fate to destroy the amulet and save this new world. But is he willing to sacrifice his own?
Check out what these talented authors are saying about it:
“The Stone of Valhalla is one of those books that only comes along once in a great while. Brooks doesn't just create a world, he puts you inside of it, allowing you to experience the wonder in a way that only he can. His characters are likable and fun. His twists leave you asking ‘Why?’ Treat yourself to an exciting adventure through a beautiful new land. Make new friends and be a part of the magic. This is a book that you will not be able to put down!” —J.R. Simmons, author of Ragesong: Awakening.
“The Stone of Valhalla drew me in from the get-go. Aaron’s journey is reminiscent of Dorothy’s trek in The Wizard of Oz. Magic, sword fights, danger, and more danger, sprinkled with humor and unexpected twists. This is one of the ‘best’ fantasy adventures I’ve ever experienced!” —BBH McChiller, author of The Monster Moon Series.
“The Stone of Valhalla is a riveting mystery revealing true friendship, loyalty and sacrifice. Brooks engages the curiosity of middle graders and older sleuths alike, until the very end. Fantastic!”—L.R.W. Lee, author of The Andy Smithson series.
Excerpt From: Chapter Two: The Penalty of Witchcraft
Aaron thought he’d been transported to some kind of renaissance fair. People milled about in the street, all dressed like they belonged on the set of some medieval movie. Most of their faces were stained with dirt, and they wore soiled clothing. Large, wooden buildings, held together by plaster, loomed overhead and all around him. Some had signs announcing specific trades and goods. The sweet smell of bread came from one shop, clearly a bakery. A rotund man stood out front, arguing with an old man who had a silvery- white beard and a long, purple cloak. He was telling the baker that the rolls he had purchased tasted ‘day-old’ and he required a reimbursement. Several passersby gave Aaron odd glances. One little girl with a group of women dressed like nuns pointed at him and giggled. He thought he heard her call him a buffoon, but she was quickly shushed by one of the women and pulled into a shop. This is so unreal. Aaron couldn’t figure out what had happened. How did I get here? Who are these people? Aaron waited for someone to jump out and yell, “Surprise, you’re on camera!” It never happened. The seconds drew on like hours, and Aaron stood unmoving like a statue in the middle of the dirt road. The sweet smell from the bakery was drowned by the stench of a sweaty mule pulling a cart packed full with what had to be manure. The wind blew and the wafting smell of poo filled Aaron’s nose. He coughed and tried to cover the reek with his shirt. “Witchcraft! Witchcraft, I say!”Aaron turned around to see a middle-aged woman with only three teeth shouting hysterically. She pointed directly at him. He looked over his shoulder to ensure no green-skinned, broom-commandeering, warty-faced lady in black stood beside him. There wasn’t anyone there. The noise on the street stopped dead except for the woman. She grabbed a small wooden crate from a cart filled with fresh flowers and stood on it. “Fetch the constable! Don’t let him get away, or he’ll set a curse on our town.”Five large men formed a group behind the woman and advanced toward Aaron. He didn’t know what to do.

However, on only her second night there she gets lost and is threatened by a stalker who proves to be immune to her martial arts training. Before she is completely overpowered, she is then saved by Ethan Deveroux.
While Danielle does find the romance she seeks in Ethan, he's no Mr. Darcy. Her hero is held by a spell which fractures their chance at a happy ending. During the day Ethan is closer to mortal than immortal and can date her like any other man. Yet, as the sun sets, the powerful magic of an ancient curse returns and the evil of that spell is revealed. When that magic begins, Danielle's fairytale romance ends because Ethan Deveroux is a vampire.

Description:
A huge fan of Jane Austen, Danielle hopes to find her own Mr. Darcy when she leaves Colorado to attend art school in London. Of course she knows it's silly to wish for that, naive even. But she's met enough males who lacked respect for women, a growing trend it seemed. And at nineteen...well....
There you have it. ENJOY! Stay tuned for March 26th when we will be doing another round of 99 cents deals!

CALM DOWN, SLOW DOWN
My biggest piece of advice for Indie authors today is this:
CALM DOWN, SLOW DOWN, AND ENJOY THE RIDE!
Far too often, Indies get caught up in the rush of the moment: the rush to get another book out. The rush to get reviews. The rush to get sales.
One of the biggest reasons you self-published is because you'll be able to have long-term control over your books. LONG TERM, not short. Sit back and enjoy the ride - things will come as you're ready for them! Don't push yourself so hard that you aren't enjoying being an author. Don't stress so much over sales and marketing where you lose joy in the writing itself. And don't worry that no one is buying your books! There's a time and a season for everything. Your time will come, but maybe right now is your season to prepare for that time - to focus on becoming a better writer rather than a better marketer.
As you become a better writer, you'll reach a point, if you don't give up, where sales will NATURALLY come. People won't be able to help but talk about your books.
You shouldn't need to feel like you have to convince people to download your stories - eventually, your writing will do that for you.
In the meantime, CALM DOWN, SLOW DOWN, AND ENJOY THE RIDE! Honestly - it's not a race. How long are you planning on being an author? For only the next two months, or for the next twenty years? Enjoy the now - enjoy the obscurity! Enjoy the opportunity to test things out without everyone watching.
Now go get some writing done. :-)

How to Create a Permafree eBook
I've been asked a few times how I got my eBook, The Key of Kilenya, to be permafree. It was easy! For those of you who have wondered, permafree means the eBook is "permanently" free. Or free for longer than just a few days. They're usually listed on the sites of multiple retailers.
Here's how you do it:
Publish the eBook with Smashwords (they one of the few who allows you to change the price of your book to free)Choose to distribute it to all sorts of different retailers, but especially Nook (Don't publish your own version directly with Nook)Copy the Nook link when Smashwords sends the free eBook over (it'll take a couple of days)Go to your book's page (the one customers see) on Amazon Scroll down to Product Details on your book. At the very bottom, you'll find this: "Would you like to give feedback on images or tell us about a lower price?" Click on the last link in that sentenceFill in the necessary info (linking back to Nook) Have a few other people do this too, if you'd like.Amazon only price matches with Nook on a regular basis. They've been known to price match other retailers (not Smashwords or Kobo, however), but it isn't guaranteed that they will for you. Nook is the one they nearly always price match.
It usually takes two weeks to a month for Amazon to drop the eBook to free. For me, it was two months. I had one friend whose book was dropped in a couple of hours (but don't expect that to happen to you, because it probably won't). It's very, very, very important to note that you should not schedule any promotions that will be based on this free eBook until after Amazon has price matched. It's nearly impossible to predict how long it'll take for them to drop the price.
And that's it! This isn't a temporary way to promote - you'll want to leave the book for free for a while to gain the benefits of having a permafree eBook.
Having a permafree eBook works best when it's the first book in the series. You'll make your money on the following books in the series. Don't think about free downloads as money lost, think of it as readers found who wouldn't have downloaded otherwise.
This sort of thing (and many other awesome tactics on self-publishing) will be taught at the upcoming Indie Author Hub conference on June 7, 2014. (That's a Saturday.) Learn more about the conference here!
