Exploiting You: Very Nice Funerals Drops Today, October 25, 2024

First, I just read through all the comments on GBT, and you people are the best. I love the recommendations and find good stuff that way, but I REALLY love the way you talk about books with such kind truthfulness. You are just good people and great readers.

Then the other thing is that Very Nice Funerals is out today. Don’t feel like you have to read it; I’ll never know.

This is a Good Book Thursday, Oct 24, 2024

This week I’m reading (and writing) The Honey Pot Plot, which I am grateful for because Very Nice Funerals was driving me crazy.

What did you read this week?

Working Wednesday, October 23, 2024

This week I worked by throwing most of my stuff in the two bedrooms here so the house is clean. As long as nobody opens the door to those two bedrooms. Which I have to do to sleep. So this next week, I’ll be cleaning the bedrooms.

What did you work on this week?

Happiness is Feeling the Season Change

It’s getting cold. Well, into the 50s, not exactly freezing, but jacket weather. I’m not a big fan of winter, but I’m a huge fan of change, the sense that something’s coming that’s different, new, exciting. And that’s what the nip in the air is giving me. Something new is on the way and that makes me happy.

What made you happy this week?

Working Friday (Yes, I Lost My Grip On the Blog)

The only thing I’ve done all week is crochet and watch old TV. And by crochet, I mean start eight different scarves and shawls, just to see what the patterns would look like in different yarns. I figure I can do that; it’s cheaper than valium (using stash yarn) and much more soothing. Also, I miss Veronica.

What did you make this week and a half?

Oh, Good Grief, Today is a Good Book Thursday

I’m SORRY. I usually do these a week ahead of time, but Veronica has just knocked me off balance. I didn’t read a damn thing this week, but today I am starting a reread of Rocky Start and Very Nice Funerals so I can move back into writing The Honey Pot Plot with my head on straight.

What did you read this week?

Happiness is A Finished Project

Like, you know, a BOOK. Or a clean living room. Or a painting or a quilt or pretty much anything that you’ve worked hard on and finally finished. That’s just all kinds of happiness right there.

What made you happy this week?

Veronica Smith, 2006-2024

Veronica Smith was a weird little dog with issues, (but that’s okay, so was her mom (me)), an English Cream dachshund from a puppy mill who was given to Dachshund Rescue the same day I adopted her (long story). She was so traumatized when I got her that she’d just cower in place, afraid to move. A month after she moved in, she was brave enough to run away when anybody got near, which I thought was terrific. A couple weeks later, she stopped running, held her ground and barked her fool head off, and never looked back.

She was absolutely the most beautiful dog I’ve ever owned and also the craziest, which is why she inspired Veronica the English Cream dachshund in the Liz Danger mysteries. She was Veronica and vice versa. Her other major accomplishment was outliving most other dachshunds by years; the girl had staying power. It’s not sad that she’s gone because it was her time–eighteen years is a long time for a little dachshund body to keep going–and we had some good last days together, and in the end she died in my arms while she was sleeping, a good way to go. I am going to miss her a lot, but I take comfort in knowing that she’ll live forever in Burney with Anemone, wearing cute t-shirts and burrowing in bears.

She was a good dog and true, and I will miss her like crazy.

This is a Good Book Thursday, October 10, 2024

This week, I remembered I had a TV and plugged it in. The last thing I saw on it was Barbie (with Krissie/Anne Stuart and Pat Gaffney), so it’s been awhile. But it’s easier to crochet watching TV than it is reading, although I do both. I’m thinking about watching Hitman, but really more tempted to go back to the Doctor Whos, starting with Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith, even if it’s just the first episodes of each. They’re such brilliant introductions to the new Who’s. In the meantime, I’m still re-reading Aaronovitch, although I feel a Pratchett binge coming on. Also started Lessons in Chemistry, had to put it down for some reason, and never went back, so it’s glaring at me from my bedside table.

What did you read this week?
