This is a Good Book Thursday, June 28, 2018
This week I read Agatha Christie because that’s about all I could cope with. First time I ever realized you need to be healthy to read, or at least achieve a minimal rate of oxygen exchange. Christie is a truly abysmal romance writer, but she’s solid on character and terrific at plotting. My Golden Age faves are Allingham and Heyer and Gilbert (stretch Golden Age a bit there), but Christie is always a classic. So what are you reading?

Today is Typewriter Day.
I love typewriters. I have no idea why, they were a nightmare to write my first master’s thesis on, and I can’t imagine using one again. But there was something lovely about the click of those keys.

This Is a Good Book Thursday: June 21, 2018
This week I sobbed my way through Jessica Parks’ wildly romantic 180 Seconds. It’s not depressing, the dog does not die, but it is an emotional roller coaster, even if the love interest is so damn wonderful it’s hard to believe he’s real. Of course, the heroine has problems believing in him, too. Really great love story, all different kinds of relationships, just a lovely book. But you’re gonna cry.

Working Wednesday, June 20, 2018
Today, I am working on my health by going to my GP for the first time in, uh, three or four years. And then possibly finally getting some color in my bathroom. I very practically made all the tile in there white because tile is difficult to change and I could add color other ways, but frankly it’s kind of meat-lockerish in there. Then I thought about painting a border on the tile, but the whole room is a shower, so that’s not practical. And then I had this BRILLIANT idea and bought tub stickies in bright colors and a lot of bright colored accessories and some yellow oilcloth and I am going to town on the meat locker today (slowly with much resting in between because still sick). I also ordered some light blue grout dye, which I am slightly nervous about it but it won’t be here for awhile, so one thing at a time.

Apologies
I meant to post today on the feedback you all give me on Nita, but I have just had the week from Hell thanks to asthma, allergies, and bronchitis all hitting at once, multiple phone calls to my GP, two trips to the ER, and two docs who were a little careless. Fortunately there were a lot of nurses and two other docs who were not careless and who took excellent care of me, and after a battery of tests pronounced me healthy as a horse with asthma, allergies, and bronchitis can possibly be (brain scan was great, EKG was great, blood tests were great) I am flat on my back with steroids, a super-inhaler, and a trip to my GP scheduled on Wed. All of which is to say, the regular posts are all scheduled to go up, but my participation here may be limited to chiming in now and again.
As always, talk among yourselves. You will anyway. And I really am fine, I just need to rest until the meds take hold.

Happiness Is a Raccoon That Reaches For Her Dreams
You know what made me happy this week? A raccoon that reached for the stars. Because a raccoon’s reach should exceed her grasp, or what’s a heaven for?
You’ve probably already heard about this little over-achiever that climbed a skyscraper in St. Paul over two days while people held their breath that she’d get to the top. That’s her in the picture to the left, taking a nap on the 22nd floor.
Meanwhile, people lined up on the street below to take pictures and somebody set up a live video feed and I was on edge the entire time because I thought the little beast would plunge to her death. Nope, she made it to the top the next day, found some cat food in a cage and walked right in so they could take her someplace with fewer skyscrapers.
Those of you who’ve had to deal with raccoons in your trash may have been chanting, “Jump, jump,” but my trash problems are bears, so I was just rooting for her. And then after she was rescued, I read an interview with a raccoon researcher, and now I am 100% pro-raccoon.
• There’s not much research on raccoons because they figure out how to break out of their cages, so most researchers gave up and went after something less Wonder-Woman-ish.
• “They don’t plan things out. They don’t say, ‘If I climb this building, I will be stuck.’ They just do the thing and regret it later.’ (Researcher Suzanne MacDonald)
• “MacDonald said she’s not sure they possess intelligence in a critical thinking way so much as an “insatiable curiosity” that leads them often enough to success.”
In other words, if I’m reincarnated as an animal, it’s probably going to be as a raccoon because we already share many traits, including searching through the trash for things we might need (my own trash, not my neighbors).
The article is well worth reading just for the troubles researchers had with the raccoons not following the rules. Also check out the videos of the little optimist scaling the building; they’re terrifying except you know she makes it. (Link to video scored to the Mission Impossible theme here.)
