Discovered books that motivated the making of new book BROKEN

Books icon designed by Sergey Krivoy

Besides the rewarding struggle to write, another major source of motivation to complete BROKEN were works—mostly self-made and published—discovered along the way. Each discovery of an announced book was a boost to bring the making of BROKEN to launch. Here’s a wholehearted acknowledgement to the people who took the book out of them, put it out there, and energized me to finish my new book:

Get Funded: A kick-ass plan for running a successful crowdf...

Identity design courtesy of Laura Helen Winn and Jason Schwartz

Big thanks to Jennifer Maples (read her Interview about creative strategy) for the introduction to Hike, a one-day design conference and workshop to empower new designers. Here, the event’s co-creators and organizers, Laura Helen Winn and Jason Schwartz, elaborate on aspects of making a gathering—in two cities in one year—from scratch.

On being a designer and event maker

How did you arrive at the idea of making the conference H...

Gathering for potential: CreativeMornings’ role in making my book BROKEN

Chat icon designed by Wilson Joseph

Organized gatherings—whether they’re flavored as conferences (including “unconferences”), summits, camps, or meet-ups—are infused with the possibilities of inspiration and knowledge. One such gathering is CreativeMornings, which I’ve consistently endorsed as my kind of design conference. Held monthly, it is a regular invitation to evoke vision and build knowledge. Bolstered by local pride and neighborly attendance, CreativeMornings also inspires reconnecting...

The Evolution of BROKEN

Calendar icon designed by Phil Goodwin

Shortly after the launch of my book BROKEN: Navigating the ups and downs of the circus called work, my co-writer Stephanie Di Biase tweeted, “it’s been a long time in the making :)”. As I mentioned in the book’s announcement, while the idea for the book was noted on June 30, 2010, the actual writing didn’t start until November 21, 2010. The gap between committing to the idea and actually beginning to write it will be a subject for a separate post.

When the...

Cards meet Communication: Allison and Daniel Nadeau of letterpress design and printing studio Ink Meets Paper

Daniel and Allison. Photograph by Olivia Rae James

Allison and Daniel Nadeau are the founders and co-owners of Ink Meets Paper in Charleston, South Carolina. Their motto: “Text less. Write more.” What particularly piqued my curiosity about their business were the videos they impressively produced to accompany each of their letterpress-printed cards. The video helped imbue each product with a narrative ambiance. Here, the Nadeau duo, with their studio ambassador Darcy, share...
