His free hand cupped the side of her neck and he pulled her close, his head lowering to rest his forehead against her own. “You’re driving me crazy, Anna. I can’t do this anymore.”

“Do what?”

He wrapped an arm around her waist and tugged her even closer, his breath warm against her face. “Not have you.”

His mouth covered hers in a hard crush of lips. He forced his tongue inside, took his time tasting her, lingering for long minutes before she pulled away.

Excerpt

Chapter One

He was staring at her again. Anna Davis never fancied herself as someone in possession of magical powers but she knew without looking the handsome man who had been on every train she boarded since South Carolina was watching her.

She stretched in an attempt to not look obvious and glanced over her shoulder. Sure enough, he was looking her way and turned his head as she made eye contact with him.

Facing the front of the train car, she held back a smile. It was just her luck to find a man who acted as if he were interested in her when she was on her way to meet the man she’d promised to marry.

Gabriel Montgomery was nothing more than a name on a piece of paper to her. She knew nothing other than he was of modest home and income and had a daughter on the cusp of becoming a woman. What would happen if she never showed up to meet him? Surely he could find another bride. She’d picked his name from the list of prospects in the Grooms’ Gazette. Another woman would do the same given time. Wouldn’t they?

The heat inside the train car was unbearable and caused more than one temper to flair. She patted her forehead with a handkerchief again as the two men in front of her yelled at each other across the isle as they’d been doing for the last half hour, the taller of the two raising a fist and shaking it with every word he spat. A baby in the seat across from hers squalled, his mother fussing to quieten him without much success. Anna would bet money no one present had any idea what if felt like to be truly hot. To feel as if your skin was sliding from your bones. These people didn’t know the meaning of discomfort. To have heat blaze across your face so scorching it stole your breath, sweat breaking out on your brow and drying before it could hit your eyes.

The moment she thought of that horrible day, the screams echoed in her memories as if she were reliving it all over again. The cracks and pops of burning timber were like war cannons going off in her head. The acrid scents of charred flesh and yarn, the wooden planks that made up the floor and human hair of those unfortunate enough to not find a way out filled the air and she could still smell it if she concentrated hard enough. She clamped her mouth shut as a scream threatened to escape, the heat inside the car, along with the noise of those fighting around her stealing her composure and causing the memories to resurface again.

The two arguing men tore the thoughts from her head as one of them fell backwards, landing on her lap hard enough she squealed, startled at the sudden contact. He’d barely been there more than a few seconds than he was flying across the isle, back into the man who hit him. The scuffle lasted only minutes as more men on the train stood and got the fighting men to calm down.

“Are you all right?”

Anna looked up, dazed, but otherwise unhurt. The handsome man she’d been trying to catch glimpses of was right in front of her. His eyes were the brightest green and kindness and a hint of mischief gleamed as he stared down at her.

“Miss. Are you okay?”

Anna blinked, then nodded. “Yes. Thank you. I’m fine.”

He was holding her arm, the warmth noticed seconds before he let got of her. The train whistle blew moments later, the car rocking as they pulled into the station. Her handsome savior straightened to his full height and smiled down at her. “Are you sure you’re all right?”

“Yes.” Anna returned his smile. She’d been wondering for hours if he were as handsome up close as he were from a distance and now she knew. He was more so.

He stared down at her for long moments before nodding his head at her and returning to his seat. The other passengers began standing to gather their belonging as the train came to a stop. Anna lingered behind, her heart still racing from the fight and those horrible images inside her minds eye that always managed to sneak in at the oddest of moments. She let the memories fade as she tried to calm her racing heart. Nearly a year after the accident and the smallest thing would trigger her memory if it.

She blew out a breath, letting the stress of the past year go one final time. After so much worry and doubt, it was time to stop fretting. Her future sat beyond those dusty train windows and she wasn’t going to let old memories tarnish the new life that awaited her. Even if the man she’d promised to marry wasn’t the man on the train she’d found so intriguing.

Looking behind her, she sought him out in the crowd of people trying to exit the train. She didn’t see him and searched the scene outside the windows. The train station platform grew crowded with people, loud screeching from wooden cargo boxes sliding down the ramps, luggage and horses being unloaded filled the air with loud bangs and pops. The shapes outside the window blurred, her nerves once again rattled as someone shouted, those standing on the platform screaming before running in different directions.

A horse ran past her car, two men close behind it and Anna closed her eyes and inhaled a steadying breath as she tried to gather the courage to stand.

It took longer than it should have but she managed to grab her carpet bag and reticule and head to the train car door.

The air outside was filled with the smell of dust, horse manure and a sweet, tangy scent she couldn’t make out. The people who had been lingering on the platform were making their way toward town and she searched the crowd to see if her mystery man was among them. She didn’t see him and wondered if he would once again board the train.

Anna stepped down, the wooden platform a solid reminder that this place was her new home and regardless of how much she wished to talk to the man with the green eyes and devilish smile, nothing would ever come of it.

She sighed and stopped looking for him, searching the faces of those still standing at the depot trying to figure out which of these men was her groom.

She held back a nervous laugh. Of all the things she’d ever imagined would become of her, a mail-order bride to a man she’d never laid eyes on was not one of them.

Making her way to the edge of the platform, she lifted a hand to shield her face from the sun and took in the buildings that made up the town. From the description she’d received in the letter she assumed the town was much smaller than it was but from what she could see, the streets were several rows deep and many more wide.

A long ten minute wait didn’t produce Anna’s groom. Entering the train station she approached the counter. “Excuse me. Has anyone been in asking for Anna Davis?”

“Sorry Miss. Just people buying tickets today.”

Anna thanked him and walked back outside. The train whistle blew, the creaking of the cars drawing her attention. She stared into the windows of the train cars wondering if her green eyed admirer was among those traveling on. Not that it mattered. She’d promised herself to a man she’d never seen and she wasn’t one to go back on her word, regardless of how much she really wanted to.

* * * *

He’d lost her. Gabriel ran a hand through his hair and searched the crowd again. He quickened his step, jumped onto a bench on the sidewalk and scanned the passengers from the train who were heading into town. When the last person crossed in front of him he sighed. He didn’t see her anywhere. Did she not get off the train?

He glanced back at the station just as the conductor blew the whistle, a thick cloud of black smoke filling the air as the train cars jolted on the track and started moving. “Damn.” He watched the train pull away, his mystery woman with it.

He’d seen her the moment he boarded the train in South Carolina. She’d caught his eye with nothing more than a smile and a soft, “excuse me,” as she passed by him. Her accent told him she wasn’t from the south. Her speech was too refined. It lacked the drawl those at home liked to add to their words.

He’d followed her movements through the train car and was about to move to the vacant seat across the isle from her when the man who started a heated argument and ended up in her lap sat down in it.

Just as well. He didn’t know what he’d say to her had she gotten off the train and followed him into town anyway. An invitation to lunch would have been his choice but then what? He wasn’t in any hurry to resume courting and she didn’t look the type to spend the afternoon with a man she barely knew. So why did he feel so disappointed in missing his chance to speak to her? To find out her name. To hear if her laughter was as sweet as her speaking voice.

Picking up his bag he gave one final look at the train and headed toward the livery stable. Coming home a day early had its disadvantages in no one was there to meet him but he’d seen a beautiful woman who had a smile becoming enough to make him want to rethink his ideas on marriage, if only for a few moments.

He hired a driver to take him to Laurel Haven, his thoughts never far from the pretty lady on the train. When he saw the plantation house in the distance, he wondered what Julia was doing. Knowing her, she was terrorizing Ruth and running Franklin ragged with her demands.

The driver pulled to a stop in front of the house. Gabriel payed him and wished him a good day before heading inside.

If he didn’t know better, he’d think no one was home. Not a sound could be heard from the depths of the house. He headed up the stairs to change his clothes and was tempted to stretch out on the bed but resisted the urge. He’d been gone a week. James had probably worked himself into exhaustion by now.

Heading down the back stairs, he startled Ruth as she rounded the corner of the work table in the kitchen. She gasped, her hand flying to her chest as her eyes widened. “What in the world are you doing here?”

Gabriel laughed. “I live here in case you’ve forgotten.”

It took Ruth a few moments to gather her composure. She stuttered a few times and glanced out the window before exhaling a deep breath. “I’m quite aware of that, Mr. Montgomery. We weren’t expecting you until tomorrow, is all.”

“My business finished early so I hopped on the first train available.” He grabbed an apple from the bowl on the cabinet, biting into to it and wiping the juice from his chin. “Where’s Julia?”

Ruth glanced out the window again and grabbed her apron, cleaning her hands and avoiding eye contact with him. “She’s about.”

“Has she been any trouble?”

“More than usual? No.”

“Anything I should be aware of?”

Her face turned a blistering red. He raised an eyebrow, the apple raised to his mouth but he didn’t bite down. “What is it?”

Ruth laughed until tears filled her eyes. “Lord be with her,” she said, glancing to the ceiling. “Just promise not to kill her.”

“What has she done now?”

Ruth lifted the dough she’d been working and slapped it back to the work table. “I’m not about to ruin her surprise. You’ll find out soon enough.” She glanced at him and shook her head. “Now might be a good time to take up drinking.”

Gabriel felt the cold hand of fear slid up his back before he clamped down across his throat. Julia tried his patience on a weekly basis but it was usually petty things that required very little of his time. If the look on Ruth’s face was any indication, this one might be the one to finally do him in.

He blew out a breath and put it out of his mind for the moment. He’d have time to deal with it later. For now, he needed to check the fields and see what had been happening in his absence. “I’ll be in the stable if you need me, Ruth. Send Julia down there when you see her.”

This weeks Friday First Kiss comes from,

Alice: Bride of Rhode Island (American Mail-Order Brides Series Book 13)

Alice entered the hotel room with James behind her. Fatigued and still reeling from the alarm of encountering William Evans, she wanted to be alone.

But there was precious little privacy. How ironic. For weeks, all she’d craved was time alone with her husband, and now that she had her wish, all she desired was distance.

She tossed her reticule on the table and began to pace. She simply wanted to curl up in her chemise on the bed, pull the covers over her, and pretend the world of Daniel Endicott didn’t exist.

Earlier, she’d had to request a hotel girl to help her dress, and clearly she would need to do so again unless James would come to her aid, but she wasn’t of a mind to ask.

How was she supposed to conduct herself with James present? They’d never been intimate.

Frustrated, tears burned her eyes. She turned away so that James couldn’t see her face and stared out the window, the streets of Newport bustling below.

“Do you still love him?”

She spun around. “What?”

“Is that why you’re so upset?”

“No. I don’t love him. I never did. I ran away so that I wouldn’t have to marry him.”

Relief shot across James’ face, and Alice wanted to scream. What did this man want from her?

“Did he hurt you?”

She paused, reluctant to delve into her courtship with William Evans.

James moved to stand before her, placing his hands on her upper arms. “You don’t need to fear him. You’re my wife now. He can’t hurt you.”

She looked into his eyes, deep pools of sea-green in the lamplight, and wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that she’d finally found a place where she could build a life, and not just any life. She wanted a home, and a husband, and children. She wanted love.

James brought a hand to her face and leaned forward but stopped when his forehead touched hers. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she brought a hand to his lapel to let him know that she accepted his overture. His thumb gently stroked her cheek, but for one long agonizing moment, he did nothing more.

You big lout, she wanted to say, just kiss me.

She angled her face and brought her mouth to his. He didn’t retreat, and, emboldened, she pressed closer. As his lips joined with hers, she closed her eyes and surrendered to the strength and response of James. His scent filled her senses, and excitement stirred in her belly.

James broke the kiss. “Alice, this isn’t a good idea.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re very young, and you might not choose to stay in this marriage.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that I’m giving you the freedom to know your own mind, and you should take it.” He exhaled sharply, and his words had been marked with a tinge of anger.

He might as well have thrown a glass of cold water into her face.

“I think I should give you privacy,” he said. “I’ll get a nightcap downstairs. Take your time with your evening routine.” He retrieved his hat. “And you can have the bed to yourself.”

He opened and shut the door, then was gone.

Alice remained rooted in the center of the room—stunned, shaken, and confused.

She could still feel the warmth of his kiss upon her lips. A memory of desire began to unfurl in her belly, spreading to her limbs.

He does want me.

She took a steadying breath, buoyed by the thought.

“There. Better now?”

She nodded, smiling up at him.

“You are a good girl. We will work on making it so everyone knows what a good girl you are.” He brushed his knuckles down the side of her face. “I like you, Caroleena. You are smart, sexy, and sassy. All the things I like in a woman.”

“Really? I thought you’d be totally disgusted with me after watching the videos, seeing how I acted today.” She dropped her gaze to the buttons of his shirt.

“Well, it was not becoming of you — but that can be fixed.” His gaze went from her eyes to her lips as he leaned forward.

Oh, my God. Is he going to kiss me?

His soft lips covered hers then, her heart racing. She wrapped her arms around his neck as his hands clutched her bottom, drawing her closer to his warm body. The masculine smell of his soap, his cologne, mingled with her own scent. He slid his tongue into her mouth, teasing and playing with hers. She pressed her clit against his thigh, rubbing herself upon him shamelessly. He groaned into her mouth, sliding his hand to cup her pussy.

“My God, Caroleena, you’re so wet. If I did not know better, I’d think you didn’t see your spanking as punishment.”

She pulled away, glaring at him. He must be nuts, he had to know she’d hated it.

“I know you felt your punishment though. I saw your tears.” He gave her a sly smile. “But, you’re dripping.”

Grabbing the back of her head, he drew her to him, devouring her lips again, situating her over his hard cock. She bit and nibbled his lips, sucking on his tongue, grinding and thrusting her hips against his hardened penis, her juices soaking into his pants. Sliding his finger through her wetness, he found her clit, flicking and circling it, bringing her to a climax shockingly fast, her shout muffled by his passionate kiss.

The stubble on his neck rubbed against her temple, her head buried in his neck while her body quaked with the residual tremors of her release. She gasped for air as his large hands squeezed and pinched her freshly spanked ass. Once she came back to a semblance of consciousness, she felt his cock twitching beneath her weeping sex. “Oh, let me—”

“Oh, no. Not yet. I want you to think and decide if this is what you want. I want to make you mine. But not tonight. It is too soon. Your passion clouds judgment. Tomorrow we talk more, yes?” He tilted her chin up, looking her in the eyes. He appeared to be dead serious.

“Really?” She couldn’t believe that he’d simply walk away. Sure, it probably wasn’t easy for him —the outline of his swollen, hard cock said as much. Was he walking because he was a… gentleman?

“Yes. Really. You need to think. If you want me, yes, we do it. If not, I work as fitness chef.” He patted her hip. “Come. Stand up.”

My Russian Master by Megan Michaels

Sometimes the road to happily-ever-after begins with two simple words: “Yes, Sir.”

For CEO Caroline Turner certain truths were inescapable. No matter how powerful, successful, and pretty she was, it didn’t matter when it came to the number on her scale — a number she wasn’t at all happy with. Like every other obstacle in her life though, she had a plan for overcoming it. The famous Maxim Volkov chef and fitness expert wasn’t cheap, and he wasn’t exactly falling in line with her wishes either, but he was perfect for the job… and extremely easy on the eyes. However alpha and devastatingly handsome the taciturn Russian might be, he seemed to have a different understanding about who the boss was in their particular arrangement. She’d just have to put him in his place… and try to ignore the insane urge to kneel at his feet.

Taking the job offered by the spoiled, if intriguing American CEO was something Maxim wouldn’t normally do. He didn’t need the money, and he usually found Western women trying at best, maddening at worst. But something about the pretty Caroline spoke to him, her defiance, and acid-tongued ways hiding an appealing vulnerability he longed to bring to the fore. Despite her self-image, he saw little wrong with the curvy, brunette beauty. Nothing wrong that is that couldn’t be cured with a little strict, bare bottom discipline, and some loving, sensual aftercare. That the appealingly disobedient, mouthy American woman would surrender to him was never in doubt.

The only question was when.

But behind Caroline’s strong, professional facade, something else lurked, a part of her painful past that threatened to endanger her future — and perhaps her life. Hiding his own potentially explosive secrets, Maxim must help her finally put that dark chapter behind her — no matter what it took, no matter how much she might fight it, no matter how much it hurt. Worse, hated competitors, circling like sharks, threatened to destroy all that Caroline had worked so hard to create.

Struggling with demons both internal and external, her last, best hope might just be a man as hard and implacable as a Siberian winter…

Publisher’s Warning: Intended for mature audiences. 18 and over only!

This sensuous romance contains explicit sexual situations, spanking, and anal play. This book deals with eating disorders and could be a trigger for some. This book can be read as a standalone. “I came to ensure you and your father are unharmed.”

It was then he realized he’d not released her arm. His hand was wrapped around her upper arm.

Sarah seemed to notice it as well, but she made no move to back away. Instead she studied his face. “Most people find you intimidating. You have a reputation for being a ruthless man.”

He’d earned every bit of the reputation for being cruel. Yet he did not feel burdened, nor any regret over anything he’d ever done. “Are you scared of me Sarah?”

“It would be the smart reaction. However, no, I am not. If anything, I feel a draw to you.” Her brows furrowed. “I think about you often. I shouldn’t,” she finished in a soft whisper.

Instead of a reply, he cupped her face and tilted it up. “You shouldn’t, Sarah. I am not a good man.”

Her eyes searched his face. “Tell me.”

Whatever she wanted him to say was lost to him. The pull between them was too strong and he was too weak to resist. When his mouth covered hers, his every thought left. The only thing real for Brogan at the moment was how much he’d wanted this. She responded by falling against him, her arms encircling his neck, giving him free access to wrap his own around her slim body. The kiss was like nothing he’d ever experienced. It was heated, yet innocent, fulfilling, yet not enough.

Sarah moaned and opened her mouth inviting Brogan to take more of her, to delve into a place from where he may never return.

Under his palms, the dip of her waist and flair of her hips shot heat through his entire body. His shaft was immediately swollen and hard. Before losing control, he grasped her shoulders and pushed her back. Both dazed, their eyes locked and lips parted, gasping for breath.

Ona turned to face Sean, a puzzled expression on her face as she studied him.

“What is it, Mr. Flood? Was there something else?”

Aye, but ‘twill wait.

Once again, a feeling of uncertainty settled over Sean. The realization that he did not know how to act properly around a woman who captured his interest momentarily shook his confidence. But the desire that had dominated his thoughts for the past week mushroomed within him.

Mayhap ‘twill not wait.

In spite of his fear of making a fool of himself, Sean decided to take the chance.

“’Twas thinking, Mrs. McNair, since you’ve agreed to step out with me, I’d consider it a kindness if you’d be letting me kiss you. But only if you be allowing it.”

His anticipation heightened as Sean watched Ona’s eyes while she considered his words. First they widened with surprise. Next they took on a thoughtful look. His heart swelled with triumph and he forced himself to patiently wait the moment he realized she decided to let him kiss her.

“You may, Mr. Flood. Since you have declared to two little boys who will not let you forget your stated intent of stepping out with me…that you are courting me…I will allow it.”

Sean’s next dilemma centered on how to go about it. He didn’t want to frighten her by acting too boldly, or by behaving in any manner that might offend her. He soon realized he needn’t have worried. As he leaned towards Ona, he felt her lips quickly join his. He wrapped his arms around her at the same time he felt her fists grab the soft wool of his shirt. She moved into his embrace. Next, the flat of her palms grazed his chest and shoulders as they traveled upward to wrap around his neck. At that point his mind and body only registered the intensity of her kiss, a kiss that matched his in passion.

Ona’s lips parted, inviting a deeper kiss, if such was possible. Unable to resist, Sean tentatively slid his tongue in just far enough to feel along the ridge of her bottom gum with the bottom of his tongue. He slid it along the top edge towards the back of her mouth. As his tongue met the barrier of her inner cheek, he curled the tip up and ran it along her upper gum back around the front of her mouth until it met her upper incisor on the right side.

Aye, smooth as silk, but still I be able to feel where her teeth used to be.

As soon as he sensed the slight pull in Ona’s body, he loosened his grip enough to allow her to sit up straight. Sean worried his heart would pound out of his chest. He swallowed, then sucked air into his starving lungs. Watching Ona, his stomach twisted in knots of apprehension. Would she spurn him for being so bold?

An amused smirk danced along Ona’s lips. “Did you discover what you wished to know, Mr. Flood?”

“Aye. You’ve healed well, Mrs. McNair. “Tis nice and smooth your gums be.”

“It is thoughtful of you to determine that for me, Mr. Flood, although I already came to the same conclusion myself.”

Sean swallowed again. Somehow, by a means unknown to him, he managed to hold his voice steady.

“‘Tis no harm in a second opinion, now is there?”

Oh, how she remembered the way Uncle Oliver had told her no one would ever look twice at someone as ugly and gangly as her! She’d believed him then, and she believed him now.

“What you thinking about Clara?” asked Sam as he walked up behind her. He turned her to face him. The kindness in his eyes was a balm to her lonely heart.

“Just thinking about keeping you out of the pie until later,” she lied.

She wanted to share her pain, her secret, but no one would believe her. Aunt Elsie didn’t when she tried to tell her. It was better to let it rest. Uncle Oliver was right; she was ugly.

“Hey,” Sam said, “you look like you’re going to cry.”

He wrapped strong arms around her, pulled her close, bent his head to kiss her forehead. He looked into her eyes, and without warning, put his hand under her chin and raised her lips to his. Clara stiffened at his touch. Then, he was kissing her. Clara put her arms to his shoulders. She relaxed, leaned into his strong chest. Their lips touched, breath slowing until nothing else existed except the two of them. It felt so good to think someone cared, someone loved her…even if it wasn’t really true.

Sam drew back, his breath deep, as if swimming for the surface of the water. He stared into Clara’s eyes, as though he were trying to see if she had felt what he did. Lightening the moment, he stepped back, but continued to gently hold onto her.

“Whoa, if I knew that kissing you…well I’d have done it a lot sooner.” He smiled

Excerpt #5:

Sarah turned to face Brian only to see him already turned towards her, studying her face. As he leaned his head forward, she leaned in to join him in a quick kiss. She could tell by the way his arm tightened around her he planned to kiss her again, this time longer and deeper. Her lips parted, longing for the kiss that promised to be so sweet only catch sight of a car entering the traffic circle on her right. With an instinct borne of her shyness, she pulled her head back as her eyes followed the car as it traveled the road in front of her, aware Brian had picked up on her mood and his eyes joined hers. Together they rotated their heads as they watched the vehicle travel three-fourths of the circle and exit behind them.

Courtesy of Francois Thomas

Sarah and Brian turned towards each other on the bench and once again studied each others’ faces. Sarah smiled as she watched the light of Brian’s laugh in his eyes.

“You’re not getting out of my kiss that easily, Sarah,” he teased. “No cars in the area. No one walking the streets.”

Sarah’s smile widened as she slid her arms around Brian’s neck and leaned in to kiss him. It was the sweet kiss she had anticipated. She forgot about the heat on her legs, the perspiration causing her arms to stick rather than to slide. She forgot to care whether or not her nose was turning red on top or was dotted with beads of sweat. All that mattered was Brian and their kiss.

As the two separated, Sarah’s eyes studied the hint of a smile playing around his mouth. Then he clicked his tongue and shook his head.

“Wow, Sarah,” he finally said as he looked away.

Annie, Celia and Lynn are all that are left of the Relief Society quilting class, but they are still determined to make baby quilts for the new mothers at church.

Annie, who is just south of eighty years old, calls the quiltsters (short for quilting sisters) together to ask for more. She wants to make lap quilts to give to some of the “forgotten” oldsters she sings to each week at the nursing home—something to wrap them in love at Christmastime. It’s a good idea, but the trio discovers that life and making quilts don’t always go as planned. The quiltsters discuss recipes and quilting ideas including a crocheted cat mat to use up their fabric selvage and trim scraps, all of which they share in the book.

Sarah and Brian meet at the university. Their first date is after Sarah’s First Saturday Block of the Month class she attends with her mom at the local quilt shop. Their romance grows, and they plan their future together—a plan that will require them to be separated for six months before their wedding. But, can they bear to be apart that long?

What wraps together this Christmas tale? The Fourteenth Quilt.

He reached for her hands and pulled her close. Resting his forehead against hers, he said, “I meant what I said about giving you time.” He saw her golden lashes fan across her cheeks, and a blush spread across her cheeks.

“What if I do not need time?”

He tipped up her chin, searching her face. “Do not say what you think I want to hear.”

Her blush rose higher, coloring her forehead and the tips of her ears. She dropped her gaze again, her voice barely a whisper. “Perhaps you think me too forward to speak of such things?”

Cradling her cheeks, he felt the heat of her embarrassment and her insecurity. “Lena, look at me.” The beat of her pulse raced beneath his fingers and slowly her gaze lifted, her eyes the most luminous blue-grey he’d ever seen. “You will always be free to speak your mind with me, to tell me your wishes.” He traced the outline of her lips with his thumb. “Speak of your desires.”

When the tip of her tongue wet her lips in the wake of his thumb, he stifled a groan and flicked his gaze to hers, lowering his mouth to hers only after her slight nod granted his silent request.

He tasted her lips and when he felt their softness cushioning his, desire sped through his veins faster than the smoothest whiskey. But he forced himself to pull back after a single chaste kiss, honoring his intention only to seal their engagement and to gently introduce Lena to his touch. However, her sigh dissipated his intent and he met her lips again, this time with participation from hers.

Her hands moved up his chest, their warmth stoking his desire. She clutched his shoulders, and he slipped one hand around to cradle the back of her head. Lightly he teased her lips, encouraging more response, which she gave so sweetly and willingly that his breathing quickened to keep pace with his heart. Loving Lena would be more delightful than he’d ever imagined. Regardless, he’d always be aware of her responses and take things at her pace.

This weeks Friday First Kiss comes from,

Harcourt’s Mountain by Elaine Dodge

He watched her sashay across the saloon of the Silver Forest Hotel,  seduction written clearly on her face and in every curve of her body. Harcourt had to admit she was enticing. Big violet eyes, black hair twisted up in inviting curls, the knowing smile on her red lips, not to mention the tight, low-cut dress leaving little to the imagination. It all promised untold carnal delight. Her perfume, a dark, satiny aroma eddied around him as she swayed to a stop in front of him, her hand on her tiny waist. He smiled. “Miss Butler.”

“Mr. Harcourt. I was watching you. You play well.”

His smile deepened. He’d been very aware of her gaze during the game. As he’d left the poker table with the evening’s takings, most of which had come out of Stephen Butler’s pocket, he’d seen the calculating look on the man’s face. A few minutes later, in the mirror above the bar, he’d watched Butler give the girl instructions. What kind of father would send his daughter to seduce a man? But, here she was, and apparently it didn’t worry her in the least. In fact, she looked as if she were enjoying herself. This could be interesting.

“Would you like something to drink?” he offered.

“Some champagne would be nice.”

He raised an eloquent eyebrow.

“We have to celebrate your winnings,” she said, using her little girl voice. Did she always talk like that, or only when she was trying to entice a man?

“Of course.” He nodded at the barman.

While the waiter was opening the bottle, a very expensive bottle, he noted, Harcourt looked Ida May Butler over, slowly. The fact that she wasn’t insulted by it stirred his amused contempt. He handed her the glass. Her fingers drifted over his as she took it. He was disappointed. She wasn’t even original in her tactics. Mind you, she couldn’t be more than seventeen under all that gloss. Taking the bottle, he followed her to the deep velvet sofa that stood in the alcove to the left of the bar—the one behind the potted plants and the artfully-draped curtain.

She put her heart into the performance. Harcourt played along to see just how far she would go and exactly what she wanted. She coquetted outrageously for the length of time it took them to finish the bottle. When a waiter came to see if they wanted another, to Miss Butler’s obvious disappointment, Harcourt shook his head. As the waiter left, she stretched out her hand towards the cord that held the curtain in place. Harcourt was quicker. He captured her hand saying, “Leave it. It might set tongues wagging.”

She shot him a look, as if trying to read his face. Harcourt smiled, lifted her  hand to his lips and kissed it. “We wouldn’t want that,” he said.

She fluttered her eyelashes. “Mr. Luke Harcourt. You don’t mind if I call you Luke?”

Harcourt wondered if she seriously believed that half a bottle of champagne had made him more pliable. “Not at all, Miss Butler.”

“You’re a very good poker player, Luke. How much did you win tonight?” She moved closer, her knee touching his.

“Just over five hundred dollars, I believe.”

“Don’t you know for sure?” She laid her hand on his thigh.

He shrugged. “Counting the money while you play is a distraction.”

“How wonderful to be able to play and not worry about how much you might be losing. That’s awfully brave. You must be very rich.”

Harcourt gave a short laugh. “Not rich enough for you, Miss Butler.”

“You could be very rich. My father says your mountain is a gold mine.”

Ah. Of course. “Does he indeed?”

“Oh yes.” Her fingers danced lightly on the muscle of his leg. “He says a man  could be wealthy overnight with all that lumber and salmon. Not to mention the possibility of gold. Imagine how exciting it would be to discover gold!” Her hand tightened.

“Imagine.”

“It must be awfully lonely living up there on your own.” She gazed into his eyes, her hand relaxing slightly on his thigh. “I’d be terrified. It’s so far away. No one there to keep you company. What if something bad happens? Indians or bears?” She lifted his hand, pressing his palm on her chest. “Here, you can feel my heart trying to leap out my body even thinking about it.”

He let it lie on her white skin for a moment. It’d been a long time since he’d been with a woman. He felt a momentary flicker of disquiet. But looking into her eyes he caught a glimpse of her empty, amoral, little soul and knew he had no cause for concern. He moved his hand round until it cupped the soft weight of her breast. She breathed in.

“If you sold your mountain to my father,” she murmured, “you would be very rich. You could move to town. We could get to know each other better.” Her hand crept up his thigh. “I’d like to get to know you, Luke, very well.”

He ran his thumb gently over her skin and bent towards her. She closed her eyes. Her red lips parted, softening in anticipation, her breath came quickly. He gave a soft laugh. He could feel her skin begin to warm under his fingers, her desire spreading through her like smoky whiskey, melting her in his hands. She seemed to have totally forgotten who was meant to be seducing whom.

“Luke,” she purred.

“Miss Butler. Will you do something for me?” His voice so latent with want she almost moaned in response. She could feel his breath on her face. She tilted her head back, shivering as his lips moved very gently on her neck, the tip of his tongue touching her.

“Anything.”

“Anything?” His voice was deep, intoxicating. She pressed herself into his hand.

“Yes.”

“Good.” He released her and sat back, his voice normal, hard even. “Tell your father my land is not for sale.”

She blinked. “What?”

“You heard me. Neither my land, nor my person for that matter, is for sale.” He rose and moved away.

“But why? I, I mean I don’t know what…” She stared up at him. The shock of his rejection was swiftly replaced by outrage. She stood up abruptly. “Oh, how, how  dare you! You were—”

“If you do want to get to know me better, Miss Butler, you can start with this—I’m not interested in little girls.”

About Elaine Dodge

Elaine Dodge 3

I was born in Zambia, grew up in Zimbabwe and am currently living in South Africa. I say currently because I did my first round-the-world trip when I was four years old. So who knows where I’ll end up! I trained as a designer and worked in that field for a number of years, even running my own company. A long stint in advertising followed. In the last few years I’ve been toiling away in the TV industry, winning an odd international award. Writing was an aspect of each part of my career. But I realised this wasn’t enough. I love “telling stories”. I’m passionate about it, so in November 2011 I decided to “wrestle the Rottweiler” and put those stories on paper. I feel most alive when I’m writing and delight in letting my imagination run riot.
