In Regards to Reading

I started a book club last month. To be honest, while I am in charge of it, I didn’t start it. A writing friend of mine did because she wanted some people to yell at her in October if she wasn’t reading the books she wanted to read then.

Now I’m completely invested.

I didn’t understand book clubs before, but mainly because I’ve always read what I want when I wanted. However at this point in my life, I have so many books to read. Having some people to keep me accountable with them is actually...

With Him

Sitting across the table from the one you most adore
The words flowing freely from your lips, and from his
The table is filled to the brim with your preferred set
And he sits there with his own as you lead the way
It’s a day in the life, a day from this day on
Sitting across from him

Sitting across the table from the one you most trust
The silence is comfortable when it is with him
He eats from every plate with unabashed pleasure
And you take a sip as you offer him more
It’s a day in the life...

A Simple Life (pt11)

Only after Emil’s eyes widened slightly in surprise did Coleen feel that her left eye was twitching. A muscle spasm she was unable to control. No, not that. A muscle spasm which meant her body felt something her mind hadn’t caught up to yet. Because despite realizing her reaction, Coleen did not feel like trying to deny it or bring any further attention to it.

She had been trying to not think of Lamar.

She had been trying not to think at all. After all, thinking was something that King Cole h...

A Simple Life (pt10)

Emil had pulled out the Agon board he had bought and told her he actually knew how to play. Not only did he know how to play, he told her he thought a lot of her analogies with the game were rather stupid. As if Coleen was talking about putting the queen undefended ahead on the board.

“Good thing I was talking for morale,” she retorted. “Those analogies were never a real game of Agon.”

“Why don’t you admit you simply said those things to make your game more interesting? To give your opponent...

A House, A Home

The window was open.

Salma knew she had not left it open. Today she remembered shutting it, locking it, right before she made breakfast. She had not slept well, but at least her hunger remained. She wanted to have eggs on toast, garlic and jam, everything that would assuage her hunger when she heard the sound in the other room.

It wasn’t the first time that a sound meant nothing. This house made a lot of sounds. Salma checked anyway, unable to stop herself. In her old place, an apartment in t...

hands

They commanded attention, leaving spectators breathless in their presence. Mi didn’t expect anything less. Dressed all in red, the crowd could still see the stains of the blood on them. Somehow, despite having returned from battle, despite the blood of their enemies and of their friends upon them, they all stood tall. Not as though they had suffered a heavy loss.

Mi dipped their head down before Jahan could see them. They shouldn’t have bothered. Their red cloak stood out in the cooler colour...

A Gift for Life and Death

When the angel forced their eyes open, it was because of the soil pressed up against their cheeks warming. They were alone, sitting up to look along up at the place where the mythic phoenix roosted. Their back was sore, though that was an improvement from before they had decided to take a nap. A distraction from the pain in their aileron, which had since sleep faded away.

Mayhaps not a good sign, but at least it wouldn’t hamper the last leg of their journey. One foot in front of the other, th...

How to describe emotions from your head

It is like a hand reaches in to grasp at your heart
That feeling in your chest
It’s not really in your chest, yet it clenches there
And trying to explain it rationally
Simply bunches it under your ribs
It is supposed to be fingers splayed across your brain
Yet it feels in your chest
Where it squirms down into your stomach
And telling it to go away
Means nothing to your throat
It crushes your breath, your heart, your insides
Eyes lighting up upon an object
Eyes lighting up in rapt attention
Ey...

A Simple Life (pt9)

Yet Alton had gotten to live to see Coleen betray him and everything he thought she had lived for. At least Lorene never realized what Coleen really was. At least she had that. A belief in a person who was not real. A Coleen she had imagined and not the one who had actually held her as she died. She had preferred that Coleen. Coleen was glad she thought she had died with that one.

Yet nothing about Emil was like either Alton or Lorene. It had been five months since she had died and Coleen rea...

I was told

I was told that I would feel something the last time
When there was nothing the first time
But no one mentioned that they didn’t know
Everyone said that they knew everything

I was told that it would only hurt a little
When it was meant to hurt a lot
But no one mentioned that they had hurt too
That it only hurt less in retrospect

I was told that I would understand when I was older
When I actually understood it better when I was younger
But no one mentioned they had forgot it too
Everyone thoug...
