My Review of an Article About Pinocchio in the June 3, 2022 of The New Yorker Lisa Mason #storycritic #articlecritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published sto

Also in the June 3, 2022 issue of The New Yorker appears “Pinocchio’s Many Lives” by Joan Acocella
Walt Disney discovered “Pinocchio”, the children’s novel, as he did “Bambi”, but he revised much of the material to suit an animated children’s movie.
The film is based on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi, a brutal book (like “Bambi” was a brutal children’s novel). Matteo Garrone made a 2019 live-action film based closely on the original book, which we saw.
The film shows a warning at the beginning. “Not suitable for all children.” Indeed, the film isn’t.
The article describes the original book in detail. The Hollywood Reporter had an extensive article about how the costumers made the live-action actor appear to be made of wood. Recommended.

My Review of an Article in the June 3, 2022 of The New Yorker about “Contact: How Animals See the World” Lisa Mason #storycritic #articlecritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #pub

In the June 3, 2022 issue of The New Yorker appears “Contact”, How Animals See the World by Elizabeth Kolbert
“You are in a room with an owl, a bat, a mouse, a spider, a mosquito, and a rattlesnake. Suddenly all the lights go off. … The bat, you realize, has no trouble at navigating because it relies on echolocation. The owl has such good hearing that it can find the mouse in the dark.  So can the rattlesnake which can detect the heat off the rodent. The spider is similarly unfazed with the blackout because it senses the world through vibrations. The mosquito senses the carbon dioxide you’re giving off and lands on your skin and bites you.”
You, a human being, are literally “in the dark” because we human animals primarily perceive the world by vision. But the animal kingdom doesn’t. Even your cats and dogs perceive the world primarily through scent, and then, as an afterthought, visually. Fascinating article. Recommended.

My Review of an Article about Edna St. Vincent Millay in the New Yorker Lisa Mason #storycritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published stories

Do you keep a daily diary? I tried once, years ago, but I realized the diary was keeping me from my creative work and was exhausting my energy that would better spent writing novels and stories. I had to give it up. I don’t keep a diary today, except to make notes on vivid dreams and other notable events in my calendar book.
In the May 16, 2022 of The New Yorker appears of an article by Maggie Doherty “Burned Out: Edna St. Vincent Millay’s Consuming Stardom”, a review of the diaries of “Vincent” (as she was known to all) which are being published by Yale University Press.
She was not a committed diarist like Patricia Highsmith, who wrote 6,000 diary pages, starting when she was a teenager, and published (in edited form) by another university press. Highsmith only wrote six short novels—which proves my point.
I didn’t realize how popular Millay, the “girl-poet”, was in the 1920s and 1930s. She went on extensive tours, reading her poems to audiences. She sold 50,000 copies each of her poetry collections. (Can you imagine such sales these days?)
She was an attractive red-head who led an openly bisexual life in New York City and married a Dutch aristocrat. She was in a terrible automobile accident, which injured the nerves in her spine, and became addicted to morphine and hard booze. She died at age 58 after falling down stairs in her house.
She is perhaps best known for the stanza:
“My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night.
But oh my friends and ah my foes
It gives a lovely light.”
RIP. Vincent.

My Review of the TLS Article about “Ulysses” by Lisa Mason #storycritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published stories #magazinearticles

Have you read James Joyce’s “Ulysses”? This title appeared as the Number One Novel on Best-of lists for the last century. I read it when I was a teenager, totally on my own, not assigned in class. I understood maybe 5% of the novel, maybe 2%. I liked the “word jazz” in the novel the most: “Roar of cataractic planets way, away, away”.
In the June 17, 2022 of TLS is a review of the 100th year anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s “Ulysses”. So too The New Yorker magazine had a tribute to the 100th year anniversary, “Getting to Yes”.
I didn’t realize that Joyce was mostly talking about the Irish liberating themselves from the British. I understood maybe that percentage (2 to 5%) of the reviews themselves. Go enjoy yourselves, Joyce fans.

My Review of an Article about Colette in the June 17, 2022 of TLS by Lisa Mason #storycritic #articlecritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published stories

We and our neighbor regularly exchange magazines—his Times Literary Supplement (TLS) for our The Hollywood Reporter (THR). It’s a good, neighborly exchange.
In the June 17, 2022 of TLS appears a commentary of a new translation and reprint of Chèri (1920) and End of Chèri (1926) by Colette. Her husband signed his own name on her first novels. He was not totally to blame; publishers and booksellers did not accept women authors’ names on books (back in the Dark Ages).
So there you go again—men suppressing women’s creativity and wealth.
That happens to this day in the science fiction and fantasy field where I write—women are still, today, pretty much dismissed. Except for me (LOL). I’ve written best-sellers and New York Times Notable Books (see below)
Colette’s husband was found out—critics and readers asked how could a man so intimately know about young women? Once she signed her name on her books, Colette first was dismissed by the literary critics as “minor work”—about women by a woman. Since then Colette has gained huge literary respect as an experimentalist and a feminist writer.
So there you have it, my friends. Another woman restored to her rightful place in history.l

My Review of “The House of Eliott” Lisa Mason #moviecritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published stories

Another BBC movie Tom checked out at our wonderful local library. Series 1 of “The House of Eliott”.  From the back of the DVD: “Set in the lively opulence of high-society London during the Roaring Twenties, Evangeline and Beatrice Eliottt, born into wealth and privilege, are left destitute when their spendthrift father dies suddenly. They have no education or training, just a passion for fashion design. As suitors try to woo them and scoundrels try to trip them up, they make independent, exciting lives for themselves and the women they employ in their house of haute couture.“
My take: Two sisters again (I’m envious, I don’t have a sister). Bea is twelve years older than Evie so their age difference occasionally creates conflict between them. They are indeed destitute when their father dies—he was a philanderer with many women, one of whom he left with a son. The sisters lose their family house, try out various jobs, and wind up with two famous dressmakers in London, only to be fired. They decide to start their own dressmaking company, which is at first dependent on wealthy women getting their own clothes handmade.
Bea visits every bank in London to obtain a loan to capitalize their company. She’s turned down every time—“Women know nothing about business.”
In the meantime, their cousin, a lawyer, is appointed their “guardian” though he’s the same age as Bea. And there you have it again, men controlling women’s wealth. The lawyer (no surprise) turns out to be a crook and Bea forces him to turn over their last inherited funds. She invests the funds in their new business.
My maternal grandmother, Mary, was an excellent seamstress. She hand-sewed many of her own dresses and, when I was a child, my ballet costumes (my costumes were the best in the whole show). She could knit, purl, and embroider. I was fascinated with her talent. I went through a stint of designing my own clothes and sewing them. I even invested in a sewing machine. I was never much good at sewing, though; it takes lots of practice.
“Eliott” is funny, entertaining, and dramatic. Season 1 ends with the house presenting its own collection but they’re sabotaged by a fashion critic. We’ll see Season 2 if the library has it. Recommended.

My Review of “The Nevers,” Season 1 by Lisa Mason #moviecritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published stories

This is another BBC movie Tom reserved at our wonderful local library. Season 1 of “The Nevers” (Rated R for language, nudity, and adult situations—my own rating.) From the back of DVD. “August, 1896. Victorian London is rocked to its foundations by a supernatural phenomenon which gives certain people—mostly women—abnormal abilities, from the wondrous to the disturbing. But no matter their particular “turns”, all who belong to this new underclass,  are in grave danger. It falls to mysterious, quick-fisted widow Amalia True and to the brilliant inventor Penance Adair to protect and shelter these gifted “orphans.”  To do so they will have to face the brutal forces that are determined annihilate their kind.”
My take: It’s not a supernatural phenomenon, it’s a beautiful alien spaceship that travels overhead, causing people to faint in the street at the sight of it and dispelling “spores” that enter some people, mostly women, and not others. The “touched” have extraordinary powers from the powerful to the mundane. Some are evil.
Ordinary people despise the touched and report anyone to the authorities whom they believe to be touched. A group of old, powerful, white men discuss what to do with the touched.
There are subplots of the police versus gangsters and the unions trying to organize laborers and digging the Underground but the storylines don’t go anywhere. Maybe the producers planned on fleshing the subplots in Season 2.
I loved the character of Penance, who is a genius inventor like a female Tesla and she invents many devices to help the touched.
Quick-moving plot turns and twists. Excellent Victorian costumes and set designs.
The last episode is puzzling and can be skipped. It’s as if the producers weren’t sure if they would do a Season 2 and wanted to wrap the backstory up.
Recommended.

My Review of “The French Dispatch” a film by Wes Anderson Lisa Mason #filmcritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasy #published books #publishedstories #screenplay

Tom got this, too, at our wonderful local library: “The French Dispatch”, a film by Wes Anderson. I have a like/dislike relationship with Wes Anderson’s films and this is no different. On the one hand, he’s very creative, nonformulaic, and mildly funny. On the other hand, he can be boring, obdurate, and sexist. Actors want to be in his films, if only in a cameo part, and his main actors, which reoccur from film to film, never seem to be absorbed in their characters. You always know who the actors are (Bill Murray, Adrian Brody, and others). Some actors always seem to be themselves, no matter the part they’re playing (Julia Roberts, springs to mind). Some actors absorb their characters so totally that they are really believable (Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins spring to mind).
The French Dispatch” is an apt spoof of The New Yorker magazine—the modern art criticism, the journalism, the sections, the covers. There’s even a shot of the standard anonymous rejection letter (I’m guessing Anderson received one of those. I certainly have). Suitable for Wes Anderson fans.

Review of “The Woman in White” Lisa Mason #moviecritic #writer #sciencefictionandfantasywriter #sciencefiction #fantasy #mainstream #screenwriter #publishedwriter #publishednovels #published stories

We quit Netflix (yet again) after all we could get “The Batman” and “Nightmare Alley”, two horrible movies, and we *couldn’t* get half a dozen movies we wanted to see (including “Mank”) because the DVDs were “unavailable”. We don’t stream (period).
So Tom set out for our wonderful little local library and took out (for free, for three weeks) DVDs of four movies: The Woman in White, The French Venture, Season 1 of The Nevers, and Series 1 of The House of Eliott
This is a review of the first movie. The other three reviews will follow and with magazine story reviews and recommendations.
The Woman in White” (2018), a five-part miniseries, is based on a century’s old novel by Wilkie Collins. From the back of the DVD: “When Walter Hartright, a young drawing master, encounters a ghostly woman dressed in white on a moonlit road in London’s Hampstead Heath, he is drawn into a web of intrigue that will change his life forever.”
My take: Change “his” life forever? How about the three women who have their lives changed forever? The drama starts with quick shots of violence toward women (so much for the “immersion” approach by “how-to-write rackets”). The quick shots are very effective and disturbing.
A sister and step-sister have inherited a beautiful old mansion in a countryside and considerable money, but the doddering old uncle controls their inheritance. Along comes an evil suitor who wants to marry the sister and control her wealth and her property.
The love and trust between the sisters are wonderful to see. The evil suitor has a few dark secrets of his own.
Husbands in Britain could commit their wives to “insane asylums” at their convenience. Physicians didn’t understand mental illness and the asylum staffers were sadistic—“the water treatment,” force-feeding, and constraining the inmates into straitjackets. It reminds of me “The Yellow Wallpaper” the classic feminist horror story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a nineteenth century suffragist, about a woman confined to a “lunatic asylum” by her husband and is slowly driven mad.
The State of California was founded as a community property state, in which either spouse, including women, control their separate property—earned or saved or inherited—after marriage. Whew! Thank God I live here. And in a long-standing, happy marriage.
The Woman in White” is a very scary story about how dangerous men’s control of women’s lives and finances were back then. Plot-spoiler: after many twists and turns, the story has a happy ending. Recommended.
