So Many Marvelous Affinities Of Magic

I follow Bonwitch through the courtyard, beneath one of those high arches, and into Cirlot Hall, a dark-brick tower where the faculty keeps their offices. Over the top of the tiny professor’s head, I glimpse richly paneled halls, brass nameplates on every door, and displays of power the professors have chosen to demonstrate their affinities.

Wow. I goggle like a sightseer at a magical Grand Canyon.

In front of the office door of Margaret Seeview, for instance, Professor of Clairaudience, Clairvoyance & Crystal-gazing, spins a splendid crystal ball the size of an alchemist’s globe. Across the hall, one Richard Fowlprice, Professor of Levitations & Apportations, has suspended a gleaming gold ingot, which rises and falls, rises and falls, then holds steady at a frustrating midway mark.

And I was thinking of investing in gold.

Dark mists drift by the doors of a Professor of Alchemy, Potions & Poisons, a Professor of Curses, Oaths & Hexes, a Professor of Transformations & Transfigurations, a Professor of Oracles & Divinations, a Professor of Rainmaking, Storms & Weather, a Professor of Tide Pools & Riptides.

I’ve heard that people can drown in riptides no more than knee-deep. That’s some mighty dangerous magic.

I hear rustling whispers outside the doors of a Professor of Invisibility & Stealth, a Professor of Auras & Wardings, a Professor of Ether & Energy, a Professor of Telepathy & Mesmerism, a Professor of Quantum Physics & the Timespace Continuum.

Quantum Physics? Is that Real Magic? Got to be.

The hall darkens and cools, crackling here and there with little juts of flame, around the doors of a Professor of Demonology, a Professor of Ceremonies & Invocations, a Professor of the Dead, the Undead & Underworlds.

I shiver, but not for long.

Now the hall warms and brightens around the doors of a Professor of Dreamology & Dreamality, a Professor of Mythology & Symbology, a Professor of Amulets, Talismans & Gemstones, a Professor of Affirmations & Visualizations, a Professor of Color Magic, a Professor of Gustatory & Olfactory Arts.

Gustatory Arts? Yes! I’ve always thought great cooking was like magic.

Patchy fog hovers around the doors of a Professor of Omens, Portents & Shadows of the Future, a Professor of Astral Travel & Astral Planes, a Professor of Psychic Self-Defense.

The scent of ripe peaches and some sort of sweet spice wafts from the door of one Professor Freya Aphrodite who teaches Sex & Fertility Magic and displays, for everyone’s pleasure, two homunculi in a steamy clinch.

So many marvelous affinities of magic! I want to meet every professor, learn every kind of magic they have to teach. And Bonwitch has instructed us to Know Thyself? It’s a baby step, when I yearn to leap over mountaintops. It doesn’t seem fair.

The characters in this little book jumped off the page and you really cared what happened to them. It is a rare talent that can do that so well! This was a compelling tale of a girl sold into slavery as her culture allowed. I found myself hooked from the very first page as I followed her through the twists and turns of her life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a character-based story with a touch of magic and fantasy to it!

 

The Most Vital Knowledge

“Knowledge is power. But wait, there’s more to it than that. What, I ask you, is the first knowledge, the most vital knowledge you must seek before you can begin to practice Real Magic? Magic that really works in the everyday world?” Bonwitch helps himself to a tumbler of tea and a wedge of lime. “Go on, play with the question. We’ve gotten too serious, I think. Have some fun.”

“How to make a billion dollars.”

“How to find true love.”

“How to pick up babes.”

“Excuse me. How to cure cancer.”

“Yeah, how about fighting for world peace?”

“World peace? Try defeating our enemies.”

“Try getting revenge on those who have hurt you.”

“How about getting power over everyone,” Jackal says.

“Abby?” Bonwitch says.

“The first knowledge? The most vital knowledge?” I mull that question over. “I’ve always thought of knowledge as the most powerful thing in the world for any endeavor. Raising a child. Growing a business. Defeating our enemies. And, yes, fighting for world peace. Fighting evil.”

“A freakin’ bleeding heart,” Jackal says. “I knew it.”

“I can live with who I am. Can you?”

Jackal shrugs.

“A lot of our graduates go into supernatural units of the military or law enforcement to fight evil,” Bonwitch says. “Evil magic has a way of persisting over centuries, even millennia, especially when unhuman entities are involved. Go on, Abby.”

“I changed my life and left my childhood home, seeking knowledge. Seeking peace of mind, too, I suppose. And now that I’ve gotten to my destination, what’s the first thing I’ve discovered? I don’t know who I really am. I’m supposed to be dead, but I’m not. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be, anymore, but I’m not what people once thought. Sally Lee is right. Who am I, anyway?”

“Precisely,” Bonwitch says, immensely pleased. “Magician, Know Thyself. Without self-recrimination yet without self-deception, you must look in the mirror of your soul. At the light and the dark. Only when you attain thorough self-knowledge may you exert your power in the world to accomplish what you aspire to, whether it’s finding true love, curing cancer, or fighting evil. Only then you can. All the technical training in the world won’t help you if you haven’t first mastered yourself.”

“Man, I would have gone to a shrink if I wanted to, like, analyze myself,” says Jigg.

Other students grumble their agreement.

Bonwitch sets down his tumbler of tea and stands. “That is all for today. Your homework assignment is this: you must look in the mirror of your soul and describe in writing who you are. Ask yourself what your inciting incident reveals about you. Probe deeply, beyond the obvious. Find the connection between that incident and your power. How that affects your goals as a magician. If you finish early, you may email your essay to me. In any case, please turn in a printout at our next class.”

More grumbles and complaints.

 “Fear not, for fear is the enemy of Real Magic. I am not going to judge you, but help you connect with your power.”

Tina looks doubtful. “But, Professor Bonwitch, I haven’t got a dark side.”

“‘Light’ and ‘dark’ may depend on the context, Tina. Bravery is usually good, fearfulness usually bad. Yet, in the face of real danger, heedlessness is bad and caution good. You follow?”

“I think so,” Tina says.

“Thank you all for an excellent beginning,” Bonwitch says as we students pack up our gear. “Not quite what you expected, eh? Never fear, we shall get to spell-casting and apportation all in good time. Good-bye till next class. Abby?”

“Yes, Professor Bonwitch?”

“May I see you in my office?”

“Of course.”

“Teacher’s pet already?” Jackal sneers. “Watch your back, Abby Teller. You know how I feel about pets.”

We’re Here To Learn Real Magic

I mull the question over, half-ready to walk out myself. “Because we’re here to learn Real Magic.” I look at Jackal, mocking me, and at Bonwitch, challenging me. “About the good and the evil, the beautiful and the ugly, the compassionate and the sadistic. Right, Professor?”

He puffs on his meerschaum pipe. The face on the bowl winks at me. “It wouldn’t be a very useful education, now would it?”

Julianne and Tina escort Sally Lee back to the patio and settle her between Josh and me. She huddles there, glaring at Jackal. I pat her hand. “We’ll protect you, Sally Lee. Won’t we, Josh?”

“I’m waiting for her to make one wrong move so I can kick her freakin’ teeth down her freakin’ throat.”

“I thought you were the mild-mannered Clark Kent.”

“Just watch me.”

We bump fists, Josh and I.

Bonwitch says, “Yonder, Off.”

The slice of light narrows to an amber beam, which slides into the pitcher of iced tea, and vanishes. Everyone oohs and aahs and applauds. I love vanishing amber beams.

“Now. Have I got your attention?” Bonwitch says. “The First Fundamental of Real Magic is this.”

Everyone, including Jackal–especially Jackal—-leans eagerly forward. Sally Lee opens her laptop. Josh poises his Fineliner over his pad of yellow paper. I hold my breath and listen. Just listen.

Baby Bunnies

A world pops up in the light, displaying the name and date of birth of Jacqueline Nixx.

Name and date give way to the cozy world of a suburban living room. A smiling man and woman perch on an Ikea couch watching a young pretty girl sitting cross-legged on a beige wall-to-wall carpet, love and parental pride shining on their faces.

The girl cradles a wicker basket in her lap. The basket is festive, a big pink bow on the handle and half a dozen baby bunnies curled up inside. The girl offers her finger, and a bunny sniffs, its little pink snout and white whiskers quivering. The girl laughs with delight.

An older girl stands off to the side. She scowls at the others, her face a dangerous mask of scorn.

“There we were,” Jackal says. “Mommy and Daddy fussing over l’il Sis, as usual. I couldn’t freakin’ take it anymore.”

The older girl twirls her thumbs, and the bunnies’ heads rotate in an odd way. She bounds across the room, rips the basket from the young girl’s hands, dumps the little dead animals in her lap.

The parents’ mouths fall open. The young girl screams, tears streaming down her face.

“Crunch! Their stupid little heads twisted right off their stupid little necks.” Jackal laughs and claps her hands. “Sis screamed and cried for days. It was fantastic.”

“Didn’t your parents punish you?” I ask quietly.

“Hell, no. Mommy and Daddy were afraid of me. Still are. Paying my tuition and all my bills, no questions asked.”

“You stupid, ugly, nasty bitch,” Julianne says.

Jackal shrugs. “Sticks and stones.”

“Why did you let this evil witch into our class?” Tina cries, turning to Bonwitch.

“Yeah, I’m paying a lot of tuition,” Josh says. “On my own.”

The bartender and one of the nurses exchange a smirk.

“Actually, I find rabbit stew quite tasty,” Jigg says, and the nurse chuckles in agreement. “I mean, they were just rabbits.”

Julianne exchanges a look with me. What kind of cretins are we in class with? “Right,” she says acidly. “And she was just the younger sister.”

A tearful thirty-something–another student who told her tale of a stepfather’s abuse and her long struggle with an eating disorder–slaps her laptop shut, stands, and stalks away.

“Sally Lee,” Bonwitch calls to her. “Please come back and join us. The class isn’t over.”

“Why should I? Why should I stay in a class with the likes of Jackal? Or any of you? Who are you people, anyway?”

Bonwitch turns to me. “Abby? Will you please tell Sally Lee why she should stay?”

“I’m Jacqueline Nixx, but my friends and my enemies call me Jackal, and so can you.” She springs to her feet and stretches, treating us to a view of her skinny ribs. “I’ve got a sister. A little, little sister. Well. Sis used to be little. Now she’s a great big fatso, too bad. Back when she was little, Mommy and Daddy couldn’t get enough of l’il Sis. One Easter Sunday, they got Sis the cutest little Easter basket filled with the cutest little Easter bunnies. Live rabbit babies, right?”

I trade a look with Josh. Neither of us likes where this is going.

“One moment, Jackal,” Bonwitch interrupts. “I’d like to see what happened that day. Yonder, On.”

An amber beam shoots out of the sunlit pitcher of iced tea, forming a thick slice of lambent light that floats in the air before us.

Tina screams, Josh shouts, Jackal chuckles, Julianne stares, and the other students murmur among themselves.

Wow. I have to laugh. What kind of power does Bonwitch possess, anyway?  He can summon the Yonder with a pitcher of iced tea? The pitcher amazes me, but the slice of light is no longer such a surprise. Yet what is that light?

“What is the Yonder, Professor Bonwitch?” I ask.

“Abby, the Yonder is the record of all acts of power—human, undead, and unhuman. Some believe the Yonder existed even before humanity came to possess consciousness. In ancient days, it took a gifted seer to summon the Yonder in a crystal ball, a basin of water, or torchlight. Others have summoned the Yonder in dreams or in trances. Our modern electricity makes summoning so much easier. So easy, in fact, that anyone with the slightest touch of power can summon the Yonder. Any source of light or a high vibration of energy will do. Computer screens work wonderfully, TVs and cell phones, too. Why, I’ve heard of a witch who spied on the sex magic of her philandering husband using a microwave oven.”
