I Changed My Mind
I stride to the bathroom, stash my handbag on a shelf in the linen closet, and strip off my watch and my jewelry. I pull my dress up over my head and hang it on a hook on the bathroom door, the turquoise silk fluttering like a butterfly’s wing. I step out of the turquoise suede heels.
My cheeks are burning, burning. I bend over the wash basin, blast the cold water, and drench my face.
I towel off and peer in the mirror as water drops slide down my cheeks. My skin glows like high-fire porcelain. A scarlet roundel gleams on each of my cheeks. The pupils of my eyes are so dilated, my irises look black. I run fingers through my hair, and the russet curls sway around my shoulders in slow-motion waves.
What has Lastor done to me?
Tension coils in my belly, a pleasured tension. The kind of tension you feel when you just have to get laid.
“Daniel?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Could you come here?”
“I thought you wanted me to stay here.”
“I’ve changed my mind.”
He appears at the door so quickly, I have to wonder if he’s been prowling around my home office. He widens his eyes at the sight of me, barefoot in my ivory silk bra and panties.
Enchantment radiates off me. I sparkle with it, and I know it.
“What’s up, beautiful?”
“How about a good-bye bonk?”
“How about a hello-again bonk?”
“Nope. Take it or leave it.”
He seizes my hand, pulls me to the brass bed, and pushes me on the mattress in a forceful way I find pleasing. He climbs on top of me, planting kisses on my face, my neck, my breasts.
I laugh, excited by his ardency. The way he’d been ardent when we first fell in love.
He rolls off me, rolls off the mattress, and tears off his shirt. He unbuckles his belt and yanks off his trousers, kicking his clothes and shoes onto the floor. He climbs on top of me again, his erection pressing against my belly. He pulls my bra over my head, freeing my arms of the straps. He yanks my panties to my ankles.
I kick the panties off. I want this. I want this.
But an awareness jolts me as his fingers rub and grope and plunge. A new awareness, shocking and strange.
Daniel’s hands are the hands of an ordinary man. His body, the body of an ordinary man. Meat, merely human meat. Meat without power. Meat without the transcendence of magic. Daniel is not a man of magic, and I feel it now, know it now, with brutal clarity.
Brand’s hand clasping mine aroused me more than Daniel spreading my knees now. Jack Kovac’s lips on my forehead thrilled me more than Daniel grunting and sweating over me. And Lastor? I yearn for tomorrow night when Lastor takes me in his arms and dances with me again.
I push him away. “Daniel, stop.”
“What?”
“I mean it, stop. We’re finished. We’re through. I can’t do this.”
He looks at me with such unrequited longing, I nearly relent.
But Mama’s voice whispers from the grave. Daniel possesses no power. He won’t understand your power. He’ll oppose your power, if he ever finds out.
“Are you freakin’ serious?”
“Very serious.” I want to say I’m sorry, but I don’t and wriggle out from beneath him. I jump out of bed and plant my bare feet firmly on the floor. Apologies won’t help. Apologies will only make things worse.
“Jesus, Abby.”
“You promised.”
“But you said.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Again?”
“Again. Please get dressed.” I add as an unwise but truthful afterthought, “It’s been wonderful seeing you again, Daniel. But now you’ve really got to go.”

This is a very entertaining novel- sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.

“So Esmeralda let you in and led you all the way to Number One.”
“I look like a nice guy, don’t I?”
“Lucky for me you’re not a hit man.”
He grins his good ol’ familiar Daniel grin. His Daniel-getting-his-way-as-usual grin. “You actually need to know why I’m here?”
“I’m guessing you’ve always wanted to see the sights of Berkeley.”
He scoots forward on the couch, the very picture of sincerity. “I’m here to take you back with me to Buckeye Heights. Let’s do it, Abby. Let’s really do it. Let’s tie the knot and settle down. You know you want to.”
“Daniel, it didn’t happen before. It’s not going to happen now. Things have changed. Really changed. I told you on the phone, I’ve got a new job. I’m going back to school. This is my home, now and for the rest of my life. For reasons you will never understand, my life depends on it.”
“Such a drama queen, you should go on Broadway.” He raises his voice in a falsetto, mocking my voice. “‘My life depends on it.’ You’re so goddamn stubborn, I could—”
“You could what?”
“I don’t know.” He smooths his hand over his forehead, finger-combing his hair onto his scalp. “Smack your ass.”
“Now that might be interesting.”
He pats his knees. “Come on over.”
I shake my head. “I’ve got to go use the ladies’ room. You stay right there. Don’t go pawing through my desk. Right?” I don’t want him finding the Beretta. Or Jack Kovac’s business card.
He swivels his head with sudden keen interest at the desk in my home office.
“I said right, Daniel?”
“Yeah, yeah, of course. What do you take me for?”
“A man who would lie to a desperate realtor.”
“Abby, I would lie, cheat, and steal for you.”
“I never knew you were so romantic.”
“There’s a lot about me you don’t know.”
Hah. Repartee is not high on Daniel’s list of social skills. What has come over him tonight? “You stay there, and I’ll be right back.”

Just Like A Longtime Couple
I swing the door open, savoring his shocked silence. Am I joking? Am I serious? Am I crazy? Vampires? From the way Daniel clears his throat, I can tell he’s trying to figure out how to ask for a clarification and doesn’t know where to begin.
And then, hallelujah! My heartfelt desire has come true. Real Magic? Oh, yeah. Real Magic is all about heartfelt desires connecting with reality.
Twitch–Twitch and his helping hands, beyond a doubt–have unpacked every one of the battalion of moving boxes, broken down and carted off the cardboard to the recycling bins, swept the floor, and put all my worldly possessions away. Somewhere. Where, exactly, I can’t say, but who’s complaining?
I stride inside, turning on lamps. I want the place well-lit.
“Wow,” Daniel says, going to the aquarium bubbling on its shelf. “I didn’t know you kept tropical fish.”
“There’s a lot about me you don’t know.”
“Wow,” he says again, gazing around. “The Stickley looks great in this place.” He sits gingerly on the mahogany-and-leather couch where, once upon a time in Mama’s living room, we shared our first kiss.
I perch on the chair opposite him. “Don’t make yourself too comfortable.”
“Wow,” he says a third time, his eyes coming to rest on me. “You look really beautiful tonight, Abby.”
Spontaneous compliments are about as commonplace as spontaneous combustion when it comes to Daniel. Now I’m suspicious.
“Let’s start with the answers to my questions.”
He carefully folds his suit jacket on the couch and looks searchingly at me, his eyes brimming with the warmth he’s capable of mustering when he’s striking deals with distributors of his processed meat products. “How did I find you? Jesus, Abby, anybody can find anybody these days.”
“That’s good to know. So how?”
“I asked my phone service to trace the call I made to the number your realtor gave me. Berkeley, California, piece of cake. And you answered the phone yesterday morning–”
“‘This is the Garden of Abracadabra,’” we say in unison just like a longtime couple would and laugh.
“You mean you actually listened to me?”
“I always listen to you. I constantly have to listen to you.”
I borrow a page from Kovac’s playbook and ignore his quip. “You tracked down the name of the place?”
“Well, yeah,” Daniel continues smoothly. “The concierge at the hotel knew it right away. This building is, like, a freakin’ historical landmark designated by some preservation society or whatever.”
“Or whatever. It’s also a security building.”
“Yeah, what a hassle. I waited around at the front door till this dame with salt-and-pepper hair to her butt came walking up with her dude. I told them I’m your fiance from Buckeye Heights, could they let me in, and where is your apartment.”

This is a very entertaining novel- sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.

Some Of My Tenants Are Vampires
“I do not lurk.” He holds up his hands, appeasing. “Jesus, Abby, one question at a time. Are you going to make your fiance who’s flown all the way from Buckeye Heights stand out in the hall like some door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman?”
“Ex-fiance, Daniel. I gave the ring back. And salesmen don’t sell vacuum cleaners door to door anymore. It’s illegal because once they got in, they took advantage.”
“I need to sit down, okay?”
“You always need something, and someone’s always got to give it to you.”
“Abby, please?”
I blow out a breath. “All right. I’m letting you in only long enough to answer my questions. Then you are out of here. You’re not spending the night. Got it?”
“Got it, I got it.”
Still, it is Daniel, not so lean anymore but still handsome in his Buckeye Heights way. After the horrors and strange things I’ve witnessed since I arrived in Berkeley, good ol’ Daniel is–I hate to admit–a comforting sight.
Another smile curves my lips and, before I know it, I’m stepping into his arms, tipping up my face for his familiar kiss. He wraps his arms around me in a good ol’ familiar Daniel hug.
No crazy, wild power like Brand. No forbidden stirrings like Jack Kovac. No bespelling sex magic like Prince Lastor. Just the alchemy of male and female hormones, going way back.
“That’s my Abby,” he whispers in the bedroom voice he knows always has me ripping off my clothes.
Had me ripping off my clothes. Past tense.
“I’m not your Abby.”
“You’ll always be my Abby.”
“Sweet, but untrue. And you are not staying. And you are not going to force me to kick you out.”
“I’m not going to force you to do anything.”
“You better promise.”
“Okay, okay, I promise.” He sighs. “Don’t worry your little head. I figured you’d be your usual difficult self. I’ve got a room at the French Hotel on north Shattuck.”
I push away from him. There he goes again–worry my little head. My SAT scores beat his by forty points. Damn right, I’ll be difficult.
House keys in hand, I take my time unlocking the locks from floor to lintel.
“Jesus, you got a problem with crime in this joint?”
“I do. Some of my tenants are vampires.”

This is a very entertaining novel- sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.

“Who’s there?”
My heart thuds as much with aggravation as with fear. Why oh why didn’t I take the Beretta? What was I thinking? More worried about what Lastor might think than of my personal safety? After sunset, the Garden of Abracadabra is a dangerous place, at least till I’ve mastered my magic.
And murderers are at large, murderers I’m connected to through random circumstance or just bad luck. How many? Even the police and Jack Kovac don’t know.
I wrap the strap of my handbag around my fist, preparing to pummel the intruder’s face. Anything on your person can serve as a weapon. Thank you, “Street Smarts for Women.”
Without the heft of the Beretta, though, the handbag is about as lethal as a goose-down pillow. Never mind. I’ll make it one mean goose-down pillow. Upright citizens beat thugs into submission every day with goose-down pillows.
“Jesus, Abby, it’s me. I thought you’d never come home.”
“Daniel?”
He steps out of the pool of darkness into a pool of light.
Daniel. My Daniel. The Daniel Stern. But, wait. No. Not my Daniel. Not anymore.
His patrician face is shiny with sweat, his gray eyes underscored by dark circles. His thinning brown hair lies rumpled across his brow. He’s slung his suit jacket over one shoulder and loosened his tie. Sweat stains the armpits of his Brooks Brothers shirt and a curl of chest hair peeks out from the open buttons.
Sweaty and rumpled looks good on the Master of the Universe. As if he’s climbed out of bed for a drink of water and preparing to climb back in.
Two kinds of shock jolt my nerves. The shock of seeing him, this man I’ve known for years. And the shock of seeing him here. Of him being here, at the Garden of Abracadabra.
My normal, quotidian Buckeye Heights past isn’t just grasping at me, it—he—is standing right in front of me.
A smile curves my lips before I can stop it. Daniel, whom I’ve loved for so long. Selfish, self-absorbed Daniel who’s not above a cheap shot. Daniel, who’s come back to me.
Come back to me? No, he’s stalking me because he can’t stand to lose. But, wait. He’s pursuing me because he still wants me. There’s a difference, right?
His drawling, privileged tone has the nerve to turn suspicious. “Where have you been?”
“None of your damn business.”
“I’ll say it’s my business. I’ve been standing here so long, I’m getting varicose veins.”
“Oh, too bad. How did you find me? How did you get in the building? How did you find my apartment? And why the hell are you here?”
“Settle down. And stop swearing at me.”
“I will so not settle down. You’re lurking outside my door in the middle of the night.”

In A Pool Of Darkness
I practically float down five stories of stairs, ignoring the pools of light, the pools of darkness, the weird rustling whispers. No doubt Scorpio Rising is partying up a hurricane in their vampire disco hell, well attended by fresh underage victims eager to be fed upon.
I hate what’s keeping them busy, but I’m glad I don’t have to worry about Jake, Flame, or Cuddles stalking me, fangs bared. At least not tonight.
Am I in love with Lastor, the cipher, the enigma, the riddle? No. I’ve fallen in and out of love. I’m not in love with the strange prince. Ah, but could I just be in lust? As if lust is ever just. Am I bespelled by a powerful sex magic?
Oh yeah, I’m bespelled. I’m enchanted. I’m enthralled. Lastor, Lastor, Lastor! For a moment, I forget everyone and everything else in my life. Lastor, Lastor, Lastor! Tomorrow night beckons. Tomorrow night is too long to wait. Tomorrow night I’ll bask again in the intoxicating touch of Lastor’s power.
Should I surrender to his enchantment?
Why not? Why not?
I haven’t nearly had my fill of life. If Mama’s death proved anything, it’s that life is too short and time passes by too quickly. You blink and the day is gone. Seize the moment while you can.
I’m so giddy it’s hard to hold onto an odd thought that cuts across my enchantment like a cold knife: Lastor told me he knew about the Tilden Park murders because he summoned the record in the Yonder.
But what I saw this afternoon in Jack Kovac’s car was everything the Yonder had to offer of that night. A blankness, a pulsing darkness, and then Brand and the girls plunging through the canopy, already riddled with mortal wounds. Kovac told me the world Brand went to was so heavily warded, the Yonder couldn’t record his power there. Couldn’t record how he must have fought against the entity killing him and the girls.
Kovac and I couldn’t see that world in the Yonder. We couldn’t see it at all.
How to add that up? I don’t know. I’m way too bespelled. But a distant alarm goes off in my mind.
I drift across the lobby, walk through the archway, stride down the hall. I pull my house keys out of my handbag, dreamily heading for the door to Number One.
Then another alarm goes off in my mind, and I stop dead in my tracks, suddenly alert, suddenly wary. My instinct to survive, up and running.
Just outside my door, in a pool of darkness, stands the tall, silent figure of a man.

This is a very entertaining novel- sort of a down-to-earth Harry Potter with a modern adult woman in the lead. Even as Abby has to deal with mundane concerns like college and running the apartment complex she works at, she is surrounded by supernatural elements and mysteries that she is more than capable of taking on. Although this book is just the first in a series, it ties up the first “episode” while still leaving some story threads for upcoming books. I’m looking forward to finding out more.
