A Touch of Poison now available for pre-order

It's a busy summer here at Five Rivers, and we're pleased to let our fans and readers know Aaron Kite's Wattie Award-winning YA fantasy is now available for pre-order through Five Rivers' website, as well as from online retailers globally.

Gwenwyn is the most miserable princess ever, and for good reason. Merely brushing up against her or touching her exposed skin is enough to cause painful burns, or worse. And if that wasn't enough, she's just discovered the singular reason for her existence: to act as the king's secret assassin, murdering neighboring princes with nothing more than a simple kiss.

This is definitely a fantasy with a twist, and a surprise ending which completely hoodwinked editor and publisher, Lorina Stephens who often cries spoilers much to the chagrin of her friends of colleagues.

LibraryThing reviewer 4 stars for Wasps at the Speed of Sound

The following 4-star review appeared on LibraryThing for Derryl Murphy's collection of short eco-fiction, Wasps at the Speed of Sound. ISBN 9781927400432 $19.99
eISBN 9781927400449 $4.99
from Five Rivers Publishing
and online booksellers worldwide
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Before I start down I look one more time in the stream. I can see nothing swimming in it, no fish, no beetle.
As I walk, I wish there were still birds to sing to me.

Eleven stories about the end of the world as we know it. Although the overall theme of the book is ecological disaster, apocalypse comes in many forms, from invading aliens, water shortages, and garbage-covered oceans, to swarms of huge insects and far future earth that is about to be swallowed by the sun. "What Goes Around" is a more light-hearted story and brings a bit of light relief to the book.

The only story I disliked was "Summer's Humans", which was inspired by Nadine Gordimer's story "July's People". The characters were unpleasant and the aliens' constant hair-shedding made me shudder in disgust (although that was probably the point).

My favourite story was The History of Photography, which was subtle and lyrical and poignant. The author said that when this story appeared in a photography magazine, the readers sent in lots of irate letters complaining about inaccuracies, as the magazine hadn't made it clear that it was fiction. "Those Graves of Memory" and "Wasps at the Speed of Sound" make up my top three. (  )   vote  |   flagisabelx | Jun 8, 2014 |

Debut novel from Albertan author Susan Bohnet

When Five Rivers' Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Robert Runté heard Susan Bohnet's pitch for My Life as a Troll at Calgary's When Words Collide, he was immediately taken by the concept.

August 1, 2014 sees the realization of several years of hard work from Bohnet and that successful pitch, in the release of a deliciously humorous and captivating YA novel, My Life as a Troll.

available August 1, 2014
from Five Rivers Publishing
and online booksellers internationally
ISBN 9781927400630, 344 pages, 6x9 trade paperback, $26.99
eISBN 9781927400647 $4.99
The premise of the novel revolves around young Jared dealing with family friction, the school bully, and the discovery of girls. As a result Jared seeks refuge in Lavascape, the hottest new Internet game around. But, there’s something creepy about how addicting the game is and how troll-like Jared starts to become in real life.
Susan Bohnet has an Associate Degree in Arts and Letters with a major in psychology from Ricks College and a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Human Resource Development from Brigham Young University. She lives in Alberta with her husband, five children, and a cute (but rather naughty) Yorkshire terrier. She has written a newspaper column called Family Frenzi for eighteen years and has had two short stories published. My Life as a Troll is her first novel. She can be found at http://susanbohnet.com/
The cover is the genius of Five Rivers' Art Director, Jeff Minkevics, who was going for contrasts and transitions both to reflect the contrasts and transitions in the narrative of Bohnet's novel, and as a visual hook.
My Life as a Troll releases in both print and eBook August 1, and launches at this year's When Words Collide.
