Dad
I was going to write about dads and grads—but didn’t make it. My father passed away a few days ago and I wanted to write a bit about him.
He was a big scary guy when I was a tot. He loved motorcycles and sports (and I didn’t). He wasn’t perfect, but he was present when a lot of other people’s dads were off “finding themselves.”
I won’t quote statistics on the socio-economic advantages to having a dad in the home, but dads are essential.
My dad and I only understood each other in the last months of his life—and that’s okay. I know some don’t believe in an afterlife; but I’ve had some powerful experiences that persuade me (beyond doubt) that I’ll see my dad again. And when I see him, I’ll see who he really is. I think we’ll be good friends.
I’m grateful to have had a father for most of my life.
A great book for dads is my classic western and International Book Award winner, To Swallow the Earth. I co-wrote it with my grandfather. It’s high adventure!
Have a graduate in the family (any age)? I recommend The Bridge of the Golden Wood: A Parable on How to Earn a Living.

4 Seasons Books for Kids: A Wordless Collection for Beginning Readers
For a long time I’ve been excited to get this particular kids’ book out. As I was “writing” the latest of my four wordless books, I realized that each pertains to one of the four seasons—and I had written them in order—without thinking about it!
WINTER – Polar Bear Bowler: A Story Without Words
SPRING – Butterfly Blink: A Book Without Words
SUMMER – Gopher Golf: A Wordless Picture Book
AUTUMN – Big Black Seed: A Book with No Words
I remember thinking when Gopher Golf came out (illustrated by Jordan C. Brun) that I had two wordless books about sports. “Too bad,” I thought, “that Butterfly Blink doesn’t fit in at all!”
SERENDIPITY!
You can imagine my thrill when the idea for the fourth no-words book came to me (independent of any theme I was conscious of); Big Black Seed just happened to be a fall/harvest book. WAIT! I thought, Polar Bear Bowler is a winter tale, Butterfly Blink is about spring, and Gopher Golf is a summer story!
I love these books because they enable kids to tell the story—and it doesn’t matter if the child is learning English or some other language! In fact, language learners of any age can test and cement extant vocabulary and be impelled to discover words they didn’t know (like bowling or butterfly) in the new language.
This collection (bound in one volume) also teaches about fairness, consideration, taking turns, and sharing.
WHO SAYS EDUCATIONAL BOOKS HAVE TO BE DULL?
Learners can also find and identify animals, sports, hidden pictures, and discover online SECRETS that keep “readers” entertained and curious!
A couple of the stories are pretty funny (even for parents and teachers. Zero words for emergent readers ages 1 – 6, Pre-K – 1st grade/ESL). Older students can write about the action in the illustrations.
BEDTIME PEACE
Some have wondered how I can be the “author” of a wordless book. Simple: the characters and scenarios just come to me, and I describe what I imagine to illustrators (like in a cartoon)—or draw/paint the action myself. It’s low stimulation for autistic children.
You can get each book as a standalone (hard cover, paper, or ebook) or bound together in this “4 Seasons” collection. Get bonus ebooks, free classroom lesson plans—plus online extras: KidsWorldBooks (worldwide rights © May 2025, libraries and major book distributors).

Big Black Seed: A New Wordless Garden Adventure
My 31st book—out March 26
I’m so excited to announce my 31st title (the seventh book I’ve illustrated): Big Black Seed: A Book with No Words.
BBS is a garden-inspired journey for beginning readers (ages 1 – 5, Pre-K – kindergarten) who tell you the story!
GROW KIDS’ MINDS TODAY
Watch as a tortoise, cat, pigs, birds, and insects find and plant a mysterious black seed. As the seed grows, so does the learning—kids cement vocabulary by describing every magical twist.
Older children can extend their knowledge by writing about the seed’s sprouting and environment, making it a perfect tool for growing verbal and written language skills.
Find the animals—and see what grows as the fruit of their labors! Discover where food comes from. Explore hidden pictures and online SECRETS that will keep kids entertained and curious!
BEDTIME PEACE
The perfect length book for toddlers (not too long for adults: 24 full-color illustrations), Big Black Seed is a low-stimulation book for autistic children.
BBS is the fourth in the popular bedtime story/baby book series, Stories Without Words (there’s one for every season!), and it’s one of my 300+ multicultural products.
There’s even more exciting news—a bundle of all four wordless kids’ books is available! The bundle includes:
Butterfly Blink: A Book Without Words Polar Bear Bowler: A Story Without Words Gopher Golf: A Wordless Picture Book Big Black SeedThese fresh titles come with free ebooks and classroom lesson plans and are being distributed worldwide to libraries, major children’s booksellers, and educators looking for enriching resources.
I loved creating Big Black Seed, a simple gardening story that adds layers of fun to the reading experience. This inclusive food tale nurtures vocabulary development and celebrates the wonders of nature. A perfect gift, get your copy in softcover or ebook (hardcover soon) versions and discover the story that grows with every reading!
10 Reasons Not to Get BBS:

You don’t want a peaceful, low-stimulation book for kids at bedtime.

What Are You Really About?
There’s very little that I know for certain—but I’ve come to know a few things for myself:
You and I are eternal beings—but not eternally static. We are creatures that can’t help improving ourselves.
Carl Sagan said: “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, first you must first invent the universe.”
As a writer, I can tell you that The Cat in the Hat, simple as it is, could never have put itself together—nor could pie ingredients.
I teach digital design. Examine a daffodil; it clearly has a designer. Look at the function of your eye. Evaluate DNA—this complex code of acids must have a coder.
There is a power superior to mine/yours—and that Essence is kinder and more able than we know. There is also a power inferior to humans that is mean and deceptive. Many people follow it, becoming weaker, meaner, and separate from truth (joy) in the process.
We ultimately get what we most desire (though that can change over time—thank goodness!).
God doesn’t make mistakes
We are family—ALL of us! Our differences are the gifts we give to each other; we’ll always need each other.
Read more here. And please comment on what YOU are about.
