Sunday Snippet
Romer’s Candle drops this Tuesday! Here’s a snip to whet your whistle.
Trini, hunched over her cocktail, stared at Jasper, mesmerized by the red in his eyes.
“I hadn’t noticed that before,” she mumbled to herself.
“It’s because the dark pulls me.” Jasper slid a fresh drink to a troll holding down the back edge of the bar.
“I’ll say,” the troll added. “My wife locked me out of the house, said I’m acting crazy.”
“Wellie and I are fighting too,” Trini said sadly. “These are strange cravings. An anger, a need to fight, to let blood loose. I haven’t felt this malevolent in decades.”
“It’s because you’re seeing pieces of your nature elevate, Trini. I’m fighting them too.” Jasper leaned against the bar back.
Two vampires Trini did not know pulled stools out on either side of her and sat uncomfortably close.
“Alone, lovely, and unprotected. How… delightful.”
Jasper eyed the troll and mouthed, “Twenty bucks.”
The troll gave him a thumbs up as one vamp ran a hand along Trini’s spine.
“Stop it. I’m married.”
“We don’t care darling, we’re just looking for a good time.”
“And a quick bite,” the second one snapped his teeth together.
Trini slid off her stool, trying to put distance between them, but the vamps moved with her.
“An eager one, my favorite kind,” purred the first vamp.
Trini’s face elongated, and her sharp beak snapped off the vamp’s ear, landing with a splat on the bar’s wooden floor.
Massive wings flashed out and Trini rose as the vampires took wing, zipping around her body and attempting to bite. In an instant, it was over, a limp vamp flapping in each one of Trini’s taloned feet.
The troll slid the twenty across the bar.“Best show in town.”

Anticipation and other Dangerous Things
Why do we tell ourselves stories? I’m as guilty as the next person. When it comes to future events, I get excited, and on the heels of that excitement rides expectations, with disappointment riding shotgun. We’re drawn to books, films and videos that pull us out of our lives, and it’s pretty damn hard to not turn around and tell ourselves a story about an event without embellishment. After all, ‘it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling’, right?

Which is a wry high five to our imaginations, the inevitable, eternal ‘what if?’ that fuels our day dreams, the moments when we space out riding in the car, or wandering from a reality we like to give a a good scrub. a fresh coat of paint, and face the world from a newer vantage point.
Maybe I’ll meet someone new at Kylie’s wedding. If I get this job, I can travel. If I just lose ten pounds… or if I land in the right place at the right time… It goes on and on.
As an author, I dwell in the land of ‘what if’ most of the time. My work life is set to carnival music. Not a bad gig. Not a super lucrative one, either, but I’m happy about the former and working hard on the latter. To that end, my ten book is set to publish November 16th. Two days! I’m feeling both blessed and exhausted.
We tell ourselves stories. The lucky few, and I count myself among them, tell stories to the world.
Romer’s Candle is on preorder now, and you’ll get yours on Tuesday. Put magic in your hands.

Metamorphosis. The muse restored his life and Romer’s guardian abilities exploded. At least, that’s what the wings seem to be saying. He’s drawn to the gorgeous newcomer, Zoelle, but his extreme light is attracting dark magic of all sorts into Magic, New Mexico, just in time for Christmas.
Zoelle, a talented forest witch, never trusted her heart or the light, preferring to hoodwink from the shadows. Her connection to Romer forces choices, but she isn’t ready to cede control over her body or how she wields her gifts.
Dark magicals flood the town, turning townspeople against each other. Is Romer the key or the curse? Forsaken by his neighbors but determined to protect them all, he struggles with his love for the darkening Zoelle. Can he save both, or must he release his beloved to sinister forces, lost forever?

Hello October, you Big Sexy Pie Man
I grew up in the MidWest, and fall is food. Just ridiculous amounts of wonderful stuff, like apples, homemade cinnamon donuts, hearty stews, savory soups, and the beginnings of pie season. Pie is simple-looking complexity.

Pie season? Damn Skippy. Fall is fruit, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and ginger. And making the house smell divine for an hour, then watching your vanilla ice cream slowly slump into nirvana on your warm slice of heaven.
To celebrate the season I invented, here’s a short snippet from To Walk in the World.
Back in February, when Brad offered to organize the Memorial, he booked a diner that their mother loved to visit when she returned to the farm. From the beginning, they were pie people, and this restaurant made astonishing pie.
“Grandma was Pennsylvania Dutch,” Standby Platitude reminisced. “Pie for breakfast is normal.”
“And, delicious,” Sad Heart agreed.
For the last decade, she’d made the holiday pies. Mincemeat for her mother, who loved the dense, dark, and fruity pie above all others. Brad was a cherry man, and she’d made apple-cranberry pies for her father years before, which were her favorite. Apple-cranberry appealed to them because the cranberries propped up the apples and made it interesting. Pies, in their family, were serious business.
Pie is about balance. Unlike cake, a no-holds-barred monument to refined sugar, pie is about taking something natural that is inconsistent and finding the way to make a meld of sweet and savory that lets the mouth sing. Pie is a simple-looking complexity. Pie is life.
Mmmmm!Easing into the upcoming holiday whirlwind, take time to make a pie just for you. Taste the fruit, dribble in just enough sugar to make it sing, slap a crust on top (and no, the edges don’t have to be pretty), paint some egg yolk on it and bake away. Then savor every bite, fall harvest’s gift to us all.
Pie is life.

Writings and Deadlines, Oh My!
Writing is my job. In my beefy little 2022 planner, four books lurk. I’m deciding, amongst the dozens of other plates I’m juggling, how 2022 will look.
Where are the months when my hair is on fire? Which ones have a getaway tucked into their folds?
I think I canIf confessing, I’m not the poster child for self care. Running at top speed while looking for my eyeglasses that are on my face is a little closer, but what I truly excel at is over-piling. My yes reflex is strong.
Okie dokie!Of course I can do that, no problem.
That sounds amazing, count me in!
Easy peasy, let me push a few things around.
Then life, that cheeky bastard, throws a wrench and “I’m sidelined with a blow knee and it’s raining plates.” – (To Walk in the World ©2021)
And that habit of the blind rush is a hard one to break. Busy keeps you from dealing with change, it’s a subterfuge you sell yourself. If you’re busy, it’s a permission to not feel, to not grow, to not challenge. It took me along time to understand that busy is a farce.
So after nine (going on ten) books written by a pantser by the seat of her calendar’s pants, I’m embracing change, a shift to structure. Oh, not of the writing. I know that has to unfold in my goofball brain the way it always has in order to be authentic. But I’m trading in the busy panic, the anxiety of deadlines in the ether.
In a way, I’m choosing to mature as a writer and publisher. Sales are up 67% this quarter. Thanks to readers discovering my little corner carnival and all the wacky wonderment within, the wheels on this bus are picking up speed. And fast.
Lift off!So I’m relearning my business, bringing a sense of order to the mechanical side, and that starts by visualizing my year, the writing, the book releases, conferences, and me time. I’m traveling, soaking up new spaces and refueling the writing. The sense of peace that came with taking time to ponder what reorganizing might actually look like was an invigorating exercise.
So, get ready, 2022. We’re hitting Boogie Beach for books 4 & 5 and tucking in a couple of romances too. I’m also planning to write an anthology of short stories to offer readers for free.
They are fueling my rise and writing is my job. It’s the least I can do.
(P.S. If you’re looking for a freebie for now, check out here and here.)
