Angry and Aware

I grew up in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood, with nice people surrounding me. I didn't have to worry about the people walking up and down the street or whether or not I had to lock the windows on the first floor of my house. I grew up in safety. When I moved to Boston, I took the idea of safety with me. I walked alone at night with my headphones in, although my heart picked up speed whenever a man--or worse, group of men--came down the sidewalk in my direction. I once stayed out all nigh...

Troubled Beginnings?

2018 has been a year of self discovery. That is to say: I think I know where I want my life to go, finally. And also: I have been exploring my past under the scope of mental health. So let's talk about my (past) mental health. Why not, right?Earlier this year, I had a conversation with someone about anxiety. It was a person who I wouldn't have imagined having anxiety, since they were so strong. While they were describing it, I realized: wow, that sounds kind of similar. I see it everywhere no...

The Beginning of Something Special

I started writing Something Special in October 2017. It seemed miraculous when I hit 5,000 words, and even more so when I reached 20,000 words. Eight and a half months later, I had achieved something I had been attempting to do for years: I finished a book.My passion for writing started when I was young. I have rough memories--you know, the kind that are hazy around the edges--of scribbling loops in a journal, filling every line. “Writing stories,” I probably told my parents. The loops were c...

Life Update: July 2018

So, it's been a hot minute since I've posted. Sorry about that, readers. I'm thinking that I need to change this around a bit, and maybe go in a new direction. I don't seem to be doing well just blogging about my life. Unfortunately, I don't think my life is that interesting. There are some new things happening: finishing my book (and editing it), traveling, and applying to masters programs are the top 3. Plus dog classes, living alone, working, reading, and making time for friends and family-...

Building Up Your Friends

No one really teaches you how to make your friends feel good. At least--no one taught me. No one said, some of your friends will need words of encouragement. Some of your friends need physical time spent with them to affirm your friendship. Some just want you to ask about their day, or check in on them, or buy them a birthday present. And so, we lose the friends that we don't take care of, and we lose friends who don't take care of us. But that's okay, because it's part of the learning process...
